Zooplankton of an urban coastal lagoon: composition and association with environmental factors and summer fish kill Rev. Bras. Zool.
Souza,Leonardo C. e; Branco,Christina W. C.; Domingos,Patrícia; Bonecker,Sérgio L. C..
Zooplankton may be regarded as a sensitive tool for monitoring environmental variations in coastal lagoons due to their ability to immediately react to changes in the water column trophic features and salinity levels. As a coastal lagoon with a broad history of anthropic influence, Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) is widely used for water sports and artisanal fishing. The present study aimed to expand the knowledge base about zooplankton in the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon by assessing the composition and time-spatial distribution of the major zooplankton groups. Samples were collected fortnightly from at four distinct sampling points August 2001 to July 2002. At each point, salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen and water transparency were...

TEMPORAL VARIATION IN THE ABUNDANCE OF Poblana alchichica IN NEAR-SHORE HABITAT OF THE HIGH ELEVATION LAKE, LAGO DE ALCHICHICA, PUEBLA, MEXICO Acta biol.Colomb.

The distribution and abundance of organisms within a pond or lake can reflect the result of a variety of factors. We examined the abundance of the endemic fish, Poblana alchichica, in Lago de Alchichica, Puebla, Mexico, as well as how the abundance varied among months. Dissolved oxygen, temperature, and salinity varied among months. The abundance of Poblana alchichica peaked in December and February. For the months when fish were observed, their abundances were positively related to dissolved oxygen concentration and were generally not related to temperature. Our results provide evidence that there is substantial seasonal variation in the abundances of Poblana alchichica and that within months, their distributions are likely driven by dissolved oxygen than...

The effect of air distributor shapes at fish ponds on the dissolved oxygen in water CIGR Journal
Awad, Amal.
Fish is one of the most important sources of protein food. A part of protein shortage problem in developing countries especially Egypt could be solved by aquaculture. Aeration is widely used in fish culture and many types of aerators have been tested for effectiveness. The aim of this research is to find out the best air distributor shapes to supply fish ponds with the enough dissolved oxygen (concentration and saturation). To achieve this aim Seven forms of air distribution density was used in addition to Two different inter-holes diameters (1mm – 2mm) and Two different inter-holes distances (15cm – 30cm). This study was carried out during seasons 2014 inside a private farm located at Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate, Egypt. The results revealed that, the best...

Overview of parameters influencing biomass and bioreactor performance used for extracellular ligninase production from Phanerochaete chrysosporium BABT
Ntwampe,Seteno; Chowdhury,Faysol; Sheldon,Marshall; Volschenk,Heinrich.
The production of extracellular enzymes is gaining momentum as commercial interests seek alternative ways to improve the productivity in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. Early research studies looked at improving batch bioreactor operational challenges; however, the use of continuous cultures was indicated to be favourable. This led to a new approach developed to produce extracellular enzymes continuously using fixed-film bioreactors from biofilms immobilised on polymeric and inorganic membranes. In this review, the performance of P. chrysosporium biomass, evaluated in terms of ligninase production using different bioreactor operation conditions, is highlighted. Furthermore, the limitations related to the implementation of optimised batch...

Performance of pilot-scale vertical flow constructed wetlands with and without the emergent macrophyte Spartina alterniflora treating mariculture effluent BABT
Sousa,Wilson Treger Zydowicz; Panitz,Clarice Maria Neves; Thomaz,Sidinei Magela.
Vertical flow constructed wetlands, planted with and without Spartina alterniflora, were tested for the treatment of mariculture wastewater. Wetlands with and without the emergent macrophyte produced reductions of 89 and 71% for inorganic solids, 82 and 96% for organic solids, 51 and 63% for total nitrogen, 82 and 92% for ammoniacal nitrogen, 64 and 59% for orthophosphate, and 81 and 89% for turbidity, respectively. Wetlands with S. alterniflora showed denitrification tendencies, while wetlands without S. alterniflora had higher oxygen levels leading to nitrification. The results suggest the fundamental role of oxygen controlling the purification processes as well as the potential of constructed wetlands to treat mariculture effluents.

Aspects of the uptake of dissolved oxygen in Cabiúnas and Imboassica Lagoons (Macaé, RJ) BABT
Brum,Paulo R.; Farjalla,Vinicius F.; Gonçalves Jr.,José F.; Santos,Anderson M. dos; Pôrto,Maurício T.; Vieira,Elisa D. R.; Ferreira,Flávia M.; Bianchini Jr.,Irineu.
In this work, we describe qualitative and quantitative aspects of the cycling of detritus of aquatic macrophytes and carbohydrates in two coastal lagoons of the northeastern part of the State of Rio de Janeiro. Samples of water of the Imboassica and Cabiúnas lagoons were enriched with sucrose. Samples of water of the Cabiúnas lagoon were also utilized to arrange mineralization chambers with fragments of three species of aquatic macrophytes found in these lagoons (Typha domingensis, Potamogeton stenostachys and Nymphaea ampla). Following that, the bottles were aerated and incubated (in the laboratory) for a period of 8 days. The concentrations of dissolved oxygen, the pH, the electrical conductivity and the temperature were daily measured. The anaerobic...

The influence of selected winemaking equipment and operations on the concentration of dissolved oxygen in wines Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Calderón,Juan F; del Alamo-Sanza,María; Nevares,Ignacio; Laurie,V. Felipe.
J.F. Calderón, M. del Alamo-Sanza, I. Nevares, and V.F. Laurie. 2014. The influence of selected winemaking equipment and operations on the concentration of dissolved oxygen in wines. Cien. Inv. Agr. 41(2): 273-280. Oxygen has a determining effect on the quality and longevity of wines. In spite of its importance, there are only a limited number of reports examining the levels of dissolved oxygen during wine production and the enrichments produced by different operations. In this study, the contribution of selected winemaking equipment and operations (i.e., pumping, centrifugation, tartrate stabilization, filtration and bulk wine transportation) on the concentration of dissolved oxygen in wines was assessed using a photoluminescence-based oxygen meter. For...
