Production de mollusques en mer ouverte dans le bassin méditerranéen ArchiMer
Danioux, Christian; Bompais, Xavier; Loste, C; Paquotte, Philippe.
In the Mediterranean basin, the offshore mollusc production takes place mainly in France and Italy. Its recent development is the consequence of the small size of lagoons and ponds, and it is principally centred on the mussel. The farming technologies on long lines are described and compared with those used in the Atlantic. Some information is given on the production systems and a short economic study demonstrates the profitability of these shell farming activities, in spite of the many risks involved, but also their relatively low profit margins. La petite pêche en Aquitaine - le bassin d'Arcachon - Halieutique, socio-économie, usages et réglementations. 1999-2000 ArchiMer
Caill-milly, Nathalie; Leaute, Jean-pierre; Trouillet, Brice; Laborde, Jean-louis; Goumy, Cécilia; Prouzet, Patrick; Grandpierre, Alde; Lissardy, Muriel; Corlay, Jean-pierre.
Introduction : Intra-basin fishing is not grasped as well, partly because of a lack of distinction between pure professional fishing units and conchological units and on the other hand because of the large amount of ships. Poorly adapted codification of the equipment found in the basin is also contributing to this lack of information. Studies on the subject do exist, but the elements necessary to publish notices are not always gathered, this is leading to the proposal of a geographical systemic analysis on the basin. The steps that are being taken are complementing the development of the Geographical Information System already in place in the basin since 1993 through DEL at the Arcachon Ifremer as well as the PECOSUDE European study ¿ caractéristiques des...

Perceptions et attentes des professionnels de manche est vis a vis de l'ecosysteme qu'ils exploitent ArchiMer
Prigent, Magali; Fontenelle, Guy.
The development of an ecosystemic approach to fisheries management requires the clear formulation of management objectives that make it possible to develop criteria to evaluate indicators. For an ecosystem, targets and limits are a matter of societal choice. Work to formulate these objectives is necessary. Within this perspective, this report presents a survey of the perceptions of Eastern English Channel fishing professionals on the state of the "marine ecosystem" resource. 29 people were polled during the month of June 2006 about their perceptions of the ecosystem as it was at a baseline time in the past, as it is today, and as it should be in future. Diagrams made it possible to formalise these perceptions. The people who were polled noticed a...

FOOD INFLATION IN MALAWI: IMPLICATIONS FOR THE ECONOMY AgEcon
Ularo, Khonje Makaiko Gonapanyanja.
Despite consecutive years of good harvest, Malawi has experienced continuous price escalation of staple food commodities unsolved over the time. The real price of maize in Malawi has increased by 141 percent between 1998 and 2008, and has been rising along with the food prices of many other commodities over this period. This study therefore investigates the determinants of food inflation rate in Malawi and its effect on the economy. Monthly and annual data were collected from National Statistical Office and Reserve Bank of Malawi from 1978 to 2008. Data were analyzed by estimating an error correction model (ECM). The results show that fertilizer prices, crop diversification index, maize prices, diesel prices, real exchange rates and real interest rates...

Linking Farm and Market Models to Analyse the Effects of the EU Nitrate Directive for the Dutch Agricultural Sector AgEcon
Helming, John F.M.; Hoogeveen, Marga W.; Mokveld, Lennard J.; Luesink, Harry H..
This paper presents a modeling system that can be used to analyze the trade off between economy and environment. It takes into account manure policy, farm structure and manure surpluses at farm level as well as the economic effects of manure surpluses at market level. The modeling system consists of two models that are linked to each other by at the one-hand manure prices and distribution of manure over different destinations and at the other hand changes in agricultural and total manure production. One model is the so-called Manure and Ammonia Model (MAM). This model calculates manure surpluses and deficits at the farm level and distribution of manure to own farm, own region, other regions, export abroad and processing at the regional level. Moreover, MAM...

ANALYSIS OF PRODUCTION AND COMPETITIVENESS ON SMALL BEEKEEPING FARMS IN SELECTED DISTRICTS OF SERBIA AgEcon
Marinkovic, Slaoana; Nedic, Nebojsa.
The study researched the costs and returns on typical small beekeeping farms from five districts in Serbia. On the basis of the field research, data on the number of beehives, type of product, volume of production per beehive and values per measurement unit were collected. In order to demonstrate the competitiveness of various agricultural products, analysis of the available data was performed using analytical calculations. According to the analysis, the labour costs comprise about 49.65%to 64.15%of the variable costs on beekeeping farms in the Raška and Šumadija districts, respectively. Production is most economical on the bee farm in the district of Srem, where every dinar spent in production creates a value of 2.22 dinars, while the farm from the...

Megújulási kényszerhelyzet az agrár-felsőoktatásban AgEcon
Kovacs, Janos.
A társadalom helyzete gazdasági teljesítőképességén nyugszik. Ezért olyan érdekrendszer szükséges, amely minden szinten – állami irányítás, intézmény, egyén, gazdasági, társadalmi szervezetek stb. – megkívánja a konstruktív hozzáállást.

GANADERIA EJIDAL Y EMIGRACION EN EL MUNICIPIO DE SAN LUIS DEL CORDERO, DURANGO, NORTE DE MÉXICO AgEcon
Orona Castillo, Ignacio; Estrada Avalos, Juan; Rangel Ramirez, Gerardo; Espinoza Arellano, Jose de Jesus; Vazquez Vazquez, Cirilo; Salazar Sosa, Enrique.
Extensive ejidal cattle in northern México has developed due adequate water soil and climate conditions; nevertheless, in the past few years a natural resources harm has been observed as well as a trend of emigration of the population. The methodology utilized in this paper was supported in a pool to ejidal cattle producers of the San Luis del Cordero County in the state of Durango, by means of stratified random sampling based on the number of cows. Results have shown that producers owning less than 20 cows depend mostly on remittances from emigrants. This group of producers also are less organized and with less technology for the agricultural and cattle activities. This study presents a characterization of the ejidal cattle production system identifying...

North Carolina High School Dropout Rates: An Econometric Analysis AgEcon
Yeboah, Osei-Agyeman; Faulkner, Paula E.; Appiah-Danquah, Gloria.
Americans have been warned that U.S. dominance in the world’s economy is fading because of the country’s poor educational performance. North Carolina falls in the bottom 10 states for the percentage of students graduating. During the 2006-07 school year, over 22,000 students in grades 9-12 dropped out of school in North Carolina. Dropouts cost North Carolina millions of dollars each year. The cost includes at least $169 million annually in taxes and public spending. High levels of poverty and low income housing have long been viewed as a stimulus to the increase in the number of high school dropouts. To address this issue, educators, policy makers, community and business leaders are examining ways to reduce the number of dropouts in every county. This...

GAME MODELS OF ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY IN AN OPEN ECONOMY AgEcon
Batabyal, Amitrajeet A..
In this paper we study some aspects of the question of international environmental regulation from a game theoretic perspective. We address two broad questions. First, we examine the circumstances under which the pursuit of unilateral environmental policy by a country in a Stackelberg game will make that country worse off. Second, we study the effects of environmental regulation by means of alternate price control instruments in a Stackelberg game where there is transboundary pollution. We find that there are plausible theoretical circumstances in which the pursuit of unilateral environmental policy is not a good idea. Further, we show that in choosing between alternate pollution control instruments, national governments typically face a tradeoff between...

Linear Programming in the economic estimate of livestock-crop integration: application to a Brazilian dairy farm R. Bras. Zootec.
Gameiro,Augusto Hauber; Rocco,Cleber Damião; Caixeta Filho,José Vicente.
ABSTRACT A linear programming mathematical model was applied to a representative dairy farm located in Brazil. The results showed that optimization models are relevant tools to assist in the planning and management of agricultural production, as well as to assist in estimating potential gains from the use of integrated systems. Diversification was a necessary condition for economic viability. A total cost reduction potential of about 30% was revealed when a scenario of lower levels of diversification was contrasted to one of higher levels. Technical complementarities proved to be important sources of economies. The possibility of reusing nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium present in animal waste could be increased to 167%, while water reuse could be...

Development of a cost calculation model and cost index for sheep production R. Bras. Zootec.
Raineri,Camila; Stivari,Thayla Sara Soares; Gameiro,Augusto Hauber.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to develop a model for calculation and analysis of production costs of lamb and, from that, to elaborate a production cost index. Panel meetings were held in five regions of the state of São Paulo, Brazil, to define technical features of representative properties of lamb production, taken as a basis for the preparation of the cost calculation model. Then the model for production cost calculation was built. The third step consisted of monitoring prices of inputs used, calculating production costs along the studied period, and generating the cost index, by the Laspeyres model. Lastly, questionnaires were applied to sheep producers, to validate the cost index. The model for production cost calculation was planned to be...

Development of a calculation model and production cost index for feedlot beef cattle R. Bras. Zootec.
Sartorello,Gustavo Lineu; Bastos,João Paulo Sigolo Teixeira; Gameiro,Augusto Hauber.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to develop a feedlot beef cattle calculation model and production cost analysis and, from the results obtained, devise a production cost index. A case study was conducted to understand the characteristics of the productive processes of a commercial feedlot. Then, based on the Economic Theory, cost items of the farm under analysis were identified and transferred to a spreadsheet. The survey included ten feedlot farmers from the state of São Paulo and other nine from the state of Goiás and was carried out to determine representative properties, and prices of items used were monitored. Production costs of each farm were calculated, and theoretical concepts of index numbers were used to devise the feedlot cattle...

Impact of economic factors on formal milk collection by the dairy industry in the main producing states in Brazil: a cointegration analysis R. Bras. Zootec.
Silva Filho,Jairo Vieira da; Figueira,Sérgio Rangel Fernandes.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to measure the short- and long-term elasticities of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), productivity, prices paid to producers, milk powder imports, minimum wages, and exchange ratios in milk collection between 1999 and 2016. For the measurement, the cointegration technique for data in a balanced panel was used, contemplating five states with great representativeness in the Brazilian industrial milk collection: Minas Gerais, Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul, Goiás, and São Paulo. These states corresponded to 73.3% of all formal milk collection in 2016. Results indicated that GDP, productivity, and imports impacted long-term milk collection. Productivity and GDP were the variables with the greatest long-term impact, with...

Costs, viability and risks of organic tomato production in a protected environment Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Machado Neto,Andrezza da Silva; Ponciano,Niraldo José; Souza,Paulo Marcelo de; Gravina,Geraldo de Amaral; Daher,Rogério Figueiredo.
ABSTRACT The aim of this research was to evaluate the agro-economic performance of two table-tomato cultivars (Santa Clara and Siluet), under organic cultivation and in a protected environment. Through the analysis of production costs, economic viability and project risk, it was sought to generate a proposal for agricultural profitability having less socio-environmental impact on family farming. To achieve that, the Operating and Total Production Costs, Net Present Value (NPV) and Internal Rate of Return (IRR) were calculated. A sensitivity analysis and economic risk analysis were then carried out. Both cultivars under consideration presented satisfactory economic indicators for the period being analysed. Judging by the criterion of Net Present Value,...

Planting coconuts in Indian villages: ethnoecological aspects and evaluation of a "sustainable development" project Biota Neotropica
Salm,Rodolfo; Feder,Lisa; Jalles-Filho,Euphly; Jardim,Mario Augusto Gonçalves.
Although scientists and policy makers embrace the general concept "sustainable development", there are few who agree on how to carry out sustainable development in specific situations. As such, sustainable development projects among ethnoscientists are widely critiqued as to how well they are inter-culturally formulated. Here we report on a controversial case of planting coconuts in Kayapó Indian villages of southern Pará, Brazil and offer our own self-critique. We began under the premise that reforestation and Kayapó general health/nutrition go hand in hand. Therefore, the flourishing of coconut culture will contribute to forest conservation in the long run, in itself, and simultaneously, maintain good nutrition for the Kayapó people who protect the...
