Modelling the biogeochemical cycles of elements limiting primary production in the English channel .2. Sensitivity analyses ArchiMer
Hoch, T; Menesguen, Alain.
A general framework for an ecological model of the English Channel was described in the first of this pair of papers. In this study, it was used to investigate the sensitivity of the model to various factors: model structure, parameter values, boundary conditions and forcing variables. These sensitivity analyses show how important quota formulation for phytoplankton growth is, particularly for growth of dinoflagellates. They also stress the major influence of variables and parameters related to nitrogen. The role played by rivers and particularly the river Seine was investigated. Their influence on global English Channel phytoplanktonic production seems to be relatively low, even though nutrient inputs determine the intensity of blooms in the Bay of Seine....

Modélisation du réseau trophique pélagique et de la production primaire en Manche ArchiMer
Hoch, Thierry.
This paper deals with a model of the pelagic ecosystem in the English Channel The model takes into account nitrogen biogeochemical cycle explicitly and indirectly phosphorus, silicon and carbon ones. The pelagic ecosystem is described precisely, on the one hand with the help of three phytoplanktonic compartments, and the other by considering the microbial food web. Primary production appears to be mainly controlled by stratification and turbidity, except in the Bay of Seine where high terrestrial nutrient inputs generate a sharp enrichment. Moreover, the model allows some general ecological conclusions to be drawn. From the simulation, it appears that inorganic nitrogen in the water column is mainly produced by an intense recycling. In accordance with in...

Range extension of the tanaidid Zeuxo holdichi (Bamber, 1990) along the northern coasts of France? ArchiMer
Foveau, Aurelie; Pezy, Jean-philippe; Bauxi, Noemie; Baffreau, Alexandrine; Bachelet, Quentin; Chouquet, Bastien; Dancie, Chloe; Ruellet, Thierry; Dauvin, Jean-claude.
The tanaidacean crustacean, Zeuxo holdichi was first described from Arcachon Bay, France, by Bamber in 1990. Since then, this species has been recorded several times in Europe, from Iberian Peninsula to Germany. In this present study, we report new records of this species along the northern coasts of France bordering the English Channel. It is hypothesized that Z. holdichi is being spread because of aquaculture activities.

Diet is correlated with otolith shape in marine fish ArchiMer
Mille, Tiphaine; Mahe, Kelig; Cachera, Marie; Villanueva, Ching-maria; De Pontual, Helene; Ernande, Bruno.
Previous studies have shown that food amount influence fish otolith structure, opacity and shape and that diet composition has an effect on otolith chemical composition. This study investigated the potential correlation between diet and otolith shape in 5 wild marine fish species by addressing 4 complementary questions. First, is there a global relationship between diet and otolith shape? Second, which prey categories are involved in this relationship? Third, what are the respective contributions of food quantity and relative composition to diet–otolith shape co-variation? Fourth, is diet energetic composition related to otolith shape? For each species, we investigated how otolith shape varies with diet. These questions were tackled by describing diet in...

The integration of fishing management into the ecosystemic approach has been recommended for many years by international consultative bodies; it is also written into international conventions and agreements. The implementation of the ecosystemic approach involves the development of programmes for monitoring exploited ecosystems in order to measure the effects of management steps. Plotting the results of these observations for operational reasons requires formalizing summary performance indicators. IFREMER has carried out halieutic observation campaigns for some twenty years along the coasts of France from oceanographic ships and chartered ships. The objective of these campaigns is to produce abundance indices of species that are of halieutic interest....

The presence of Melinna palmata (Annelida : Polychaeta) and Ensis directus (Mollusca : Bivalvia) related to sedimentary changes in the Bay of Seine (English Channel, France) ArchiMer
Dauvin, J; Ruellet, T; Thiebaut, E; Gentil, F; Desroy, Nicolas; Janson, A; Duhamel, S; Jourde, J; Simon, S.
Since late 1990s the annelid polychaete Melinna palmata and the mollusc bivalve Ensis directus have been collected in the eastern part of the Bay of Seine (English Channel), indicating changes in the benthic communities. Melinna palmata was never collected prior to 2002, whereas it was reported in the muddy fine sands of the western part of the Channel, along the French (e.g. Bay of Cherbourg) and southern UK (e.g. Southampton Waters) coasts. Ensis directus was first reported in 1998 and now appears to be well implanted, given the abundant population collected in 2006. The colonization of Melina palmata seems to be a consequence of recent increase of the fine sediment in the eastern part of the Bay, while that of the invasive Ensis directus seems more...

Absorption et régénération de l'azote dans le système brassé de la Manche : productions nouvelle et régénérée ArchiMer
Maguer, Jf; L'Helguen, S; Madec, C; Le Corre, P.
Nitrate and ammonium uptake rates were measured in spring and summer in deep and shallow well-mixed waters of the English Channel during different cruises between 1986 and 1994. In the deep waters, nitrate uptake was relatively low during phytoplankton development and ammonium uptake represented more than 70 % of the total uptake irrespective of the season. In the shallow waters, nitrate uptake during spring phytoplankton growth was high and represented about 75 % of the total uptake. Ammonium uptake became substantial towards the end of spring and summer. The high contribution of ammonium to the nitrogenous nutrition of phytoplankton over the whole of the well-mixed waters is related to a high rate of recycling of nitrogen in the water column. Ammonium...

Modelling the biogeochemical cycles of elements limiting primary production in the English channel .1. Role of thermohaline stratification ArchiMer
Menesguen, Alain; Hoch, Thierry.
This paper presents the general framework of an ecological model of the English Channel. The model is a result of combining a physical sub-model with a biological one. in the physical submodel, the Channel is divided into 71 boxes and water fluxes between them are calculated automatically. A 2-layer, vertical thermohaline model was then linked with the horizontal circulation scheme. This physical sub-model exhibits thermal stratification in the western Channel during spring and summer and haline stratification in the Bay of Seine due to high flow rates from the river. The biological sub-model takes 2 elements, nitrogen and silicon, into account and divides phytoplankton into diatoms and dinoflagellates. Results from this ecological model emphasize the...

Observation and modelling of natural retention structures in the English Channel ArchiMer
Menesguen, Alain; Gohin, Francis.
Accumulation of heat, or dissolved substances (nutrients, pollutants, etc.), or fine suspended particles in a water body is a key process in the functioning of aquatic ecosystems and their resistance to perturbations. In complex and wide open environments such as marine ecosystems, net accumulation is not only linked to the local renewal capacity of the water body, but also to the partial recirculation of water due to convective cells of various sizes. The English Channel, which can be considered as mainly dominated by tidal movements, exhibits such a complex quasi-permanent long-term circulation, made of a central "river" bordered with a lot of nested gyres. Here, we show that structures visible on satellite images of SST (Sea Surface Temperature),...

Evidence of a relationship between weight and total length of marine fish in the North-eastern Atlantic Ocean: physiological, spatial and temporal variations ArchiMer
Mahe, Kelig; Bellamy, Elise; Delpech, Jean-paul; Lazard, Coline; Salaun, Michele; Verin, Yves; Coppin, Franck; Travers-trolet, Morgane.
Weight–Body Length relationships (WLR) of 45 fish species (37 Actinopterygii and eight Elasmobranchii) were investigated. A total of 31,167 individuals were caught and their biological parameters measured during the four quarters from 2013 to 2015, on five scientific surveys sampling the North-eastern Atlantic Ocean from the North Sea to the Bay of Biscay (ICES Divisions IVb, IVc, VIId, VIIe, VIIg, VIIh, VIIj, VIIIa and VIIIb). Among 45 tested species, all showed a significant correlation between total length (L) and total weight (W). The influence of sex on WLR was estimated for 39 species and presented a significant sexual dimorphism for 18 species. Condition factor (K) of females was always higher than for males. Moreover, a spatial effect on the WLR...

Recent changes in ichthyoplanktonic assemblages of the eastern English Channel ArchiMer
Di Pane, Julien; Koubbi, Philippe; Giraldo, Carolina; Lefebvre, Valerie; Caboche, Josselin; Marchal, Paul; Loots, Christophe.
ish assemblages vary through time in both abundance and diversity, often due to changes in climate. The potential consequences of these changes on the larval phase need to be considered. In the Eastern English Channel, fish larvae of 30 taxa, from surveys conducted during spring in the nineties and in 2017 with bongo nets, were used to investigate seasonal and interannual changes in larval assemblages with different statistical tests and multivariate analyses (Outlying Mean Index, Principal Coordinate Analysis and variance partitioning). The major change observed was significant lower abundances in 2017 (in April and May) compared to the nineties. Most of the dominant taxa were two to three-fold less abundant in 2017 than the 1990s. We suggest that the...

Narrowing down the number of species requiring detailed study as candidates for the EU Common Fisheries Policy discard ban ArchiMer
Morfin, Marie; Mehault, Sonia; Benoit, Hugues P.; Kopp, Dorothee.
By 2019, the Common Fisheries Policy will prohibit discarding in all European fisheries of any pelagic, demersal or shellfish species for which removals are managed by TACs and quotas or minimum sizes. However, the regulation allows for exemptions from the prohibition for species for which scientific evidence demonstrates high survival rates associated with discarding. Producing reliable evidence of high survival typically requires long and costly studies involving tagging or captivity. This paper proposes to use the capacity to resist air exposure, a key stressor for discarded animals, as a proxy for survival that can be used to prioritize candidate species for more in-depth discard survival studies. The time required to induce mortality (TM) in...

First Comprehensive Quantitative Multi-Parameter Assessment of the Eutrophication Status from Coastal to Marine French Waters in the English Channel, the Celtic Sea, the Bay of Biscay, and the Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Lefebvre, Alain; Devreker, David.
The first quantitative and comprehensive assessment of the eutrophication status from coastal to offshore French waters was performed within the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD descriptor 5) for the English Channel, the southern bight of the North Sea, the Celtic Seas, the Bay of Biscay and the Western Mediterranean Sea. Based on a combination of different data sources (in situ, satellite, and modeling products), a fully-integrated dataset was generated over the period 2010–2016. Using the best available knowledge on the eutrophication process and definition, the assessment procedure was implemented considering nutrient pressures, and direct and indirect effects of excessive inputs. The different steps of the assessment were: (i) Establishment of...

The dynamics of the phytoplankton assemblage, the physical, chemical and biological parameters, and primary productivity and production were monitored in the central English Channel along a transect between Ouistreham and Portsmouth from January to December 2010. The spatial patterns of the phytoplankton assemblage were controlled by the hydrological characteristics of the water masses, and the annual structure of the phytoplankton assemblage was characteristic of the central English Channel and was controlled by seasonality. The spring bloom was dominated by a single species, Chaetoceros socialis, and associated with low microphytoplankton evenness and Shannon-Wiener indices, whereas the evenness index was high from late spring to winter and associated...
