Cotton production has been improved in respect to amount and quality with contributions of scientific and technological innovations. Increased sensitivity to health and environmental issues has caused development of new subjects such as organic agriculture. Organic production systems are based on specific standards that combine tradition, innovation and science. It sustains human and animal health and maintains ecosystem and soil quality. The goal of the organic cotton production system is to sustain human and animal health and maintain ecosystem and soil quality by the producing the cotton without synthetic chemical fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides, growth regulators, growth stimulators, boll openers or defoliants [1, 2, 3]. It is a consistency... |

This study was designed to investigate the effect of vitamin E supplementation on vitamin E depots and immune responses in weaned pigs after an E. coli inoculation. The design was a 2×2 factorial with vitamin E supplementation (150 mg/kg RRR-α-tocopheryl acetate versus a control diet containing 60 mg all-rac-α-tocopheryl acetate) and E. coli 0 149 inoculation (inoculation of 1×108 CFU on day 2 and 3 after weaning versus inoculation of vehicle). The pigs were housed individually during the experiment which lasted for 10 days from weaning at 7 weeks of age. Blood was sampled on day 1 (day of weaning) and 9 of the experiment, and serum was analyzed for α-tocopherol concentration. On day 10 of the experiment, pigs were killed and samples of liver, heart,... |

N-balances over 35 years from the DOK trial are presented and combined with Nstock changes in DOK treatments on different fertilisation levels. Results strongly indicate an N efficiency-sustainability dilemma: DOK treatments with a high nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) lose more soil stock N than those with a lower NUE but higher N losses from the system. The biodynamic system showed little advantage in terms of soil N stocks sustainability while the solely mineral fertilised conventional treatment had highest NUE across all inputs including soil N change. |

Optimized application of nitrogen from livestock manure will reduce nitrogen losses and result in higher yields. Practical recommendation Nitrogen application from livestock manure to winter and spring crops has different effects on crop yields depending on the pre-crop and the amount of ammonium-N provided. The results above show that nitrogen availability from livestock manure is limited. Based on the results, the following recommendations can be made: • If the pre-crop is not nitrogen-fixing, apply 20 to 60 kg of ammonium-N from livestock manure prior to sowing of crops. • Livestock manure application to a spring crop after nitrogen-fixing clover-grass is not yield effective and may bear the risk of nitrogen losses. • If livestock manure is... |

2. Études en... |

2013 was the second year of the "PlantyOrganic" system development in practice. The six-year rotation is laid out and measurements took place at soil and crop. With the exception of the potatoes in 2013 all crops had the pre-crop as foreseen in the design. The fertilizers used were completely produced in the own system, as foreseen in the system design. The amounts of nitrogen applied were about 45 % higher than in the design. Soil nitrogen is measured and used as input in the nitrogen model NDICEA. There was a sufficient match between measured and calculated level of soil mineral nitrogen. The crops performed well, with a high yield in carrots and oats, and a disappointing yield in wheat. In wheat nitrogen was limiting for the yield, we do not yet have a... |

Through a concept for biorefinery of green herbage to protein feed, fertilizer and energy, the project develops a new platform for organic growth. The project will deliver solutions to the following key challenges to the organic sector: Supply of organic protein feed to monogastric livestock, improved, climate-friendly, and robust crop rotations in areas with a low density of livestock, better use efficiency of the nutrients, and higher yields. These solutions are important for the sectors credibility and legitimacy. The project applies an ambitious, holistic, whole value-chain and cross disciplinary approach with the following activities: 1) Identification of the best suited material for biorefinery through cropping trials; 2)Harvest and extraction of... |

Over the past fifty years, most poultry in the UK have been managed in specialist indoor systems and excluded as a significant enterprise from most other farm types. This meant that there was little information on how to integrate poultry into land-based systems such as organic production. This Defra project OF0163 aimed to assess methods of integrating organic poultry into crop rotations, taking into account the need to meet the birds’ nutritional and physiological requirements for health and performance, the recycling of nutrients between soil, plants and birds and practical limitations of the system. Objectives 1. To review the scientific literature available on home grown protein sources so as to identify their maximum inclusion rates in organic... |

This tool is about growing cover crops in the best way in an organic arable crop rotation. Thus, the tool is for organic farmers and their advisors who want a successful implementation of and increased knowledge on growing cover crops – regardless of experience. Cover crops can if used properly have tremendous effect on soil quality, nutrient leaching/losses, weed pressure, and soil erosion – common challenges in arable farming. The tool helps to identify when to grow cover crops and where to position them in the rotation. Furthermore, it suggests cover crop species suitable for different soil types, degree of crop competition, existing N-pool in the field and how much seed is needed pr. ha. Structured as a factsheet, the tool provides... |

The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of the intercropping and irrigation frequencies in the leaf development and productivity of taro (Colocasia esculenta) under organic management. The experiment was set up as a randomized complete block design, a factorial 2 x 2, with four replications. Taro was cultivated in monoculture or intercropped with Crotalaria juncea under two irrigation frequencies: every 3.5 days for 30 minutes and every 15 days for 2 hours. The intercropping increased taro petiole length but did not increase leaf area. The same effects were observed for irrigation frequency on the leaf area and petiole, length at the 30th and 60th days after C. juncea cutting. The amount of taro yield and offshoot number of class 1... |
