Growth and meat quality of three free-range chickens and commercial broiler under the same breeding conditions Animal Sciences
Zidane, Azdinia; Ababou, Adda; Metlef, Sarra; Niar, Abdellatif; Bouderoua, Kaddour.
Commercial breed has taken over the Algerian poultry production market which participated in the weakening of the village poultry farming, highly dominant prior to the 1980s. Fortunately, the dietary preferences of consumers, strongly participated in the preservation of the local animal breed diversity. In this context, the aim of this work was to study the growth performances and meat quality of 3 local chicken phenotypes versus commercial broiler chicken in the same breeding conditions in the region of Chlef in Algeria. A week after hatching, 4 randomly chosen samples of 30 chicks from each phenotype normal plumage free-range chicken (NPFRC), crested free-range chicken (CFRC), feathered tarsus free-range chicken (FTFRC) and commercial broiler chicken...

Marín-Quiroga,Arlette; Villanueva-Fierro,Ignacio; Rodríguez-Pérez,M. Alberto; Lares-Asseff,I. Antonio; Cháirez-Hernández,Isaías; Proal-Nájera,J. Bernardo.
The content of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) in bovine milk in México is unknown, and high levels could increase the health risk for adult people who ingest milk. The aim of this study was to determine the level of IGF-1 and its relationship with fat content using liquid chromatography with ion trap as a mass detector in milk marketed in Durango, México. During 18 months we analyzed, three times, six lots chosen randomly of whole, reduced-fat, and low-fat milk of three brands. Each sample was pre-treated using cut-off membranes, digested with trypsin, and subjected to liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. There was a significant difference in the mean concentration of IGF-1 between the brands and types of milk analyzed (Chi square=34.66;...

Effect of high-fat diets on body composition, lipid metabolism and insulin sensitivity, and the role of exercise on these parameters BJMBR
Coelho,D.F.; Pereira-Lancha,L.O.; Chaves,D.S.; Diwan,D.; Ferraz,R.; Campos-Ferraz,P.L.; Poortmans,J.R.; Lancha Junior,A.H..
Dietary fat composition can interfere in the development of obesity due to the specific roles of some fatty acids that have different metabolic activities, which can alter both fat oxidation and deposition rates, resulting in changes in body weight and/or composition. High-fat diets in general are associated with hyperphagia, but the type of dietary fat seems to be more important since saturated fats are linked to a positive fat balance and omental adipose tissue accumulation when compared to other types of fat, while polyunsaturated fats, omega-3 and omega-6, seem to increase energy expenditure and decrease energy intake by specific mechanisms involving hormone-sensitive lipase, activation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα) and...

Vargas,Diego Prado de; Nörnberg,José Laerte; Mello,Renius de Oliveira; Scheibler,Rudolf Brand; Mello,Fernanda Cristina Breda; Rizzo,Fábio Antunes; Bellato,Tatiana Kátia Bertussi.
ABSTRACT: Milk supply chain in Brazil exhibits significant production system heterogeneity in all federal units. Thus, the objective of this study was to form homogeneous groups of bovine milk production units based on the chemical and microbiological quality of the milk via multivariate statistical techniques. A total of 1,541 milk producing units (MPUs), corresponding to 44,089 samples, were analyzed. The first three principal components accounted for 81.38% of the total variation in the data. Principal component 1 (PC1) was associated with the chemical quality of milk (fat, protein [PROT] and total dry extract [TDE] content), while PC2 and PC3 were associated with microbiological quality (somatic cell count [SCC] and total bacterial count [TBC]). The...
