The structure of Cichla kelberi population was characterized regarding the sex ratio, total length composition and some reproductive characteristics. The specimens were collected in two periods, from November 2002 to November 2003 and from December 2004 to May 2006. The sex ratio was significantly different than 1:1. The total length varied from 3.4 to 40.1 cm, with individuals in the shortest length classes occurring throughout the year, but with greater incidence in the warmer periods. Females and males reached similar lengths and there was no difference between the sexes regarding the length-weight relationship. The estimated values of condition factor were near the central value of 1.0 and decreased during the cooler months, coinciding with periods of... |

Most Rivulidae fishes are popularly known as annual fishes which live in ephemeral environments such as pools, that obligatorily dry out seasonally causing the death of adult individuals. They have unique biological characteristics such as small body size, early sexual maturation, continuous reproduction, an elaborated courtship behavior, and a great reproductive capacity among fishes. The rivulids are widely distributed in North, Central and South America. In this study, the diet and reproductive biology of Cynopoecilus melanotaenia was analyzed. A total of 263 specimens were collected and the analysis of 233 gastrointestinal contents revealed an invertivorous diet composed mainly of small crustaceans (Cladocera, Amphipoda, and Ostracoda) and immature... |

ABSTRACT The reproductive potential of red porgy in coastal waters of Buenos Aires Province (Argentina) and Uruguay (34º-39ºS) was studied by means of a macroscopic and histological analysis of the gonads. Length and age at first maturity were determined, and fecundity, spawning frequency and egg quality were estimated. The spawning season extended from spring through summer between October and January with a peak of spawning in December. Length and age at maturity for sexes combined was 24.5 cm TL and 1.54 years, respectively. Batch fecundity ranged from 6,974 (25 cm TL) to 110,725 (39 cm TL) hydrated oocytes and showed significant linear relationships with total length and ovary-free weight. Relative fecundity ranged from 16 to 172 oocytes per female... |

Considering that reproduction studies are fundamental to understand the life cycle of organisms, this study aimed to investigate the reproductive strategies of saguirus Cyphocharax nagelii and Steindachnerina insculpta in a dam of Mogi Guaçu River, (SP). Specimens were collected between August 2005 and July 2006 using gillnets with mesh sizes ranging from 1.5 to 5.0 cm between adjacent knots. Reproductive dynamics, body condition, reproductive period, spawning type and fecundity were analyzed in both species. The body condition reflected the reproductive dynamics, and differed significantly between the wet and dry seasons. During the dry season, the feeding activity and the accumulation of fat in the visceral cavity were higher. The reproductive period of... |

Lophiosilurus alexandri is an endemic fish from the São Francisco River basin, Brazil. The aim of this study was to induce L. alexandri to spawn and to obtain data on several reproductive variables for this species. For induced spawning, adults were submitted to Cyprinus carpio pituitary homogenate (CPH). Nine of the 12 females (75%) responded positively to the treatment. The stripping of oocytes was performed 8.4 h after the second dose of CPH with the water temperature maintained at 26ºC. The number of stripped oocytes per gram of ova was 74 ± 5 oocytes g-1, and the mean oocyte diameter was 3.1 ± 0.2 and 3.6 ± 0.2 mm, before and after hydration, respectively. The oocytes were opaque, yellowish, demersal, highly adhesive, and covered by a gelatinous coat.... |

The aim of the present study provides the first results on the reproductive biology of the anchovy, Anchoa marinii, in a nearby-coastal area of Mar Chiquita coastal lagoon, 37º32'00"S 57º19'00"W, Argentina. To perform this, we employed mainly female gonads, at both microscopic and macroscopic levels. The oocyte diameter distribution and the microscopy analysis of oocytes, showed different batches of growing oocytes, suggesting that the anchovy is a multiple spawner, with constant oocytes recruitment all over the reproductive season. The batch fecundity ranged between 749 and 3,207 oocytes for females, and the relative fecundity ranged from 127 to 422 yolked oocytes per female gram (ovary free). The fecundity estimation has been made with yolked oocytes. No... |

We investigated effects of sucrose solution on Onus sauteni nymphal survival rates, adult longevity and fecundity in the absence of arthropod prey. When first instar and third instar nymphs were fed 30% sucrose solution, they lived longer and reached a later instar than those fed on distilled water. However, there were no significant differences in longevity and fecundity between adult females fed sucrose and those fed distilled water. Therefore, sucrose solution provides nutritional benefits to O. sauteri nymphs, but other materials (i.e. protein) may be necessary to increase adult performance. In agro-ecosystems, it is regarded that biological control using O. sauteri can be enhanced by application of sucrose solution as a food source. |

We investigated effects of sugar solution on adult longevity, progeny production and progeny sex ratio of Aphidius ervi in the presence and absence of host aphids. When female parasitoids were provided with 50% glucose–fructose solution in 1 : 1 ratio, they lived approximately twice longer than those provided with distilled water, irrespective of host aphid provision. The same effect of sugar solution was also observed on progeny production. When the parasitoid was fed sugar solution, its lifetime progeny production approximately doubled in comparison to that provided with water, whereas daily progeny production did not differ. Total number of female progeny did not differ between adult female provided with water and sugar solution, but significantly... |

The current study was conducted to investigate the pathogenicity and its mode of action by Verticillium lecanii hybrid strains in different sedentary stages of Heterodera glycines. Three different sedentary stages (pale yellow female, yellow brown cyst, and dark brown cyst) of H. glycines were treated with V. lecanii and incubated for 3 weeks on water agar. After 3 weeks of incubation, eggs were investigated for the following parameters: (i) the infection frequencies of eggs, (ii) the number of eggs laid, and (iii) the number of mature and healthy eggs. Subsequently, the fecundity of H. glycines treated with V. lecanii was investigated in greater detail. Consequently, some strains had a greater ability to infect eggs and this significantly reduced the... |

The fecundity and population structure of the cockle, Anadara antiquata L., from sandy/muddy intertidal habitats in the intertidal of Ocean Road beach was examined from January to December 2001. A. antiquata is hand harvested, for domestic consumption, mainly by women and children, with the empty shells sold to traders. The sex ratio from combined data of all classes deviates significantly from 1:1 with the ratio of females to males increasing significantly above 41 mm shell length. Hermaphrodites were also observed in this size range indicating a protrandric hermaphrodite situation with males maturing earlier than females. Fecundity increases with an increase in shell length, with a mean of 1,652,000 (+/- 562,000 [or 40%] SE) eggs per female and... |

Hake Merluccius hubbsi fecundity was estimated with the gravimetric method using ovaries with hydrated oocytes without post-ovulatory follicles. Samples were obtained in three research cruises in the Argentine Sea, off Chubut Province, SW of Peninsula Valdes between 42°S and 45°S, near Isla Escondida, during December 1993, 1994 and 1996, time which coincides with the most important reproductive activity. Relative fecundity values were 722 plus or minus 107, 606 plus or minus 60 and 533 plus or minus 26 oocytes per gram of female without ovaries, respectively. Partial fecundity was adjusted to a potential model for total length and weight without ovaries, corresponding: F=0.9988 Lt3.294 and F=197.91 P1.1585 for 1994 and F=6.9785 Lt2.816 and F=552.22 P0.9889... |

A total of 807 Dipturus chilensis specimens (448 males and 359 females) caught in research cruises performed by the National Institute for Fisheries Research and Development (INIDEP) during 2011 and 2012 were analyzed. The cruises were carried out between (34°S-48°S) and 50-313 m depth. Mean size at first maturity (TL50) was estimated at 780 mm and 908 mm TL for males and females, respectively, values that represented about 80% of the respective maximum total length observed. Besides, latitudinal differences in sexual maturity estimates were detected. The total number of 4-7 reproductive seasons and 42-52 follicles or individuals of maximum annual potential fecundity estimated in this paper allow to suggest that each female would produce less than 300 eggs... |

Uca annulipes (H. Milne Edwards, 1837) is probably the most abundant brachyuran crab inhabiting mangrove forests in East Africa. However, its fecundity is poorly understood. Crabs were randomly sampled during spring low tides from January to April 2002 at Costa do Sol mangrove, Maputo Bay, southern Mozambique. Carapace width (CW), abdomen width (AW), weight (W) and egg numbers (EN) were recorded. The average fecundity was 1599 ± 842 eggs, ranging from 529 (CW = 5.0 mm) to 4250 (CW = 24.1 mm) eggs respectively. Egg number increased significantly with increase in crab size. This information contributes to our knowledge of the reproductive potential and the reproductive processes occurring in this species of crab. |
