The opportunistic feeding and reproduction strategies of the annual fish Cynopoecilus melanotaenia (Cyprinodontiformes: Rivulidae) inhabiting ephemeral habitats on southern Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Gonçalves,Cristina da Silva; Souza,Ursulla Pereira; Volcan,Matheus Vieira.
Most Rivulidae fishes are popularly known as annual fishes which live in ephemeral environments such as pools, that obligatorily dry out seasonally causing the death of adult individuals. They have unique biological characteristics such as small body size, early sexual maturation, continuous reproduction, an elaborated courtship behavior, and a great reproductive capacity among fishes. The rivulids are widely distributed in North, Central and South America. In this study, the diet and reproductive biology of Cynopoecilus melanotaenia was analyzed. A total of 263 specimens were collected and the analysis of 233 gastrointestinal contents revealed an invertivorous diet composed mainly of small crustaceans (Cladocera, Amphipoda, and Ostracoda) and immature...

Reproductive biology of Parona signata (Actinopterygii: Carangidae), a valuable economic resource, in the coastal area of Mar del Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina Neotropical Ichthyology
Bianchi,Santiago Julián; González-Castro,Mariano.
ABSTRACT The reproductive biology and life cycle of Parona leatherjacket, Parona signata, present in Mar del Plata (38º 00’S 57º 33’W) coast, was studied. Samples were obtained monthly since January 2018 to February 2019 from the artisanal fishermen and the commercial fleet of Mar del Plata. A histological analysis was carried out and the main biologic-reproductive parameters were estimated: fecundity, oocyte frequency distribution and gonadosomatic index (GSI). Both the macroscopic and microscopic analyses showed reproductive activity in March and November. Mature females were recorded, which showed hydrated oocytes, as was evidenced by the histological procedures. Both, the histological and the oocyte diameter distribution analyses showed the presence of...

Ecology of Phallotorynus pankalos (Cyprinodontiformes: Poeciliidae) in a first-order stream of the upper Paraná Basin Neotropical Ichthyology
Súarez,Yzel R.; Silva,João Paulo da; Vasconcelos,Lilian P.; Antonialli-Júnior,William Fernando.
Some aspects of the population ecology of Phallotorynus pankalos in a first-order stream of the Iguatemi River Basin are described based on samples taken from March/2007 to February/2008. A total of 2680 individuals, including 948 males and 1732 females was collected. Adult females are larger than males; theirs mean fecundity was estimated as 6.5 embryos/female. There was a strong correlation between standard length and ovary weight, relative ovary weight, and number of embryos. The size of the first maturation of 50% of female population was estimated as 18.24 mm of standard lenght. High female mortality was observed after the first reproduction and sex ratio presents seasonal variation with higher female proportion in the winter.

Reproductive studies of Anchoa marinii Hildebrand, 1943 (Actinopterygii: Engraulidae) in the nearby-coastal area of Mar Chiquita coastal lagoon, Buenos Aires, Argentina Neotropical Ichthyology
López,Sofía; Mabragaña,Ezequiel; Astarloa,Juan Martín Díaz de; González-Castro,Mariano.
The aim of the present study provides the first results on the reproductive biology of the anchovy, Anchoa marinii, in a nearby-coastal area of Mar Chiquita coastal lagoon, 37º32'00"S 57º19'00"W, Argentina. To perform this, we employed mainly female gonads, at both microscopic and macroscopic levels. The oocyte diameter distribution and the microscopy analysis of oocytes, showed different batches of growing oocytes, suggesting that the anchovy is a multiple spawner, with constant oocytes recruitment all over the reproductive season. The batch fecundity ranged between 749 and 3,207 oocytes for females, and the relative fecundity ranged from 127 to 422 yolked oocytes per female gram (ovary free). The fecundity estimation has been made with yolked oocytes. No...

Phenotypic plasticity in fish life-history traits in two neotropical reservoirs: Petit-Saut Reservoir in French Guiana and Brokopondo Reservoir in Suriname Neotropical Ichthyology
Mérona,Bernard de; Mol,Jan; Vigouroux,Régis; Chaves,Paulo de Tarso.
Fish species are known for their large phenotypic plasticity in life-history traits in relation to environmental characteristics. Plasticity allows species to increase their fitness in a given environment. Here we examined the life-history response of fish species after an abrupt change in their environment caused by the damming of rivers. Two reservoirs of different age, both situated on the Guiana Shield, were investigated: the young Petit-Saut Reservoir in French Guiana (14 years) and the much older Brokopondo Reservoir in Suriname (44 years). Six life-history traits in 14 fish species were studied and compared to their value in the Sinnamary River prior to the completion of Petit-Saut Reservoir. The traits analyzed were maximum length, absolute and...

Effects of Sucrose on the Longevity and Fecundity of Orius sauteri (Poppius) (Hemiptera : Anthocoridae) OAK
前田, 聖子; 仲島, 義貴; 田頭, 栄子; 高木, 正見.
We investigated effects of sucrose solution on Onus sauteni nymphal survival rates, adult longevity and fecundity in the absence of arthropod prey. When first instar and third instar nymphs were fed 30% sucrose solution, they lived longer and reached a later instar than those fed on distilled water. However, there were no significant differences in longevity and fecundity between adult females fed sucrose and those fed distilled water. Therefore, sucrose solution provides nutritional benefits to O. sauteri nymphs, but other materials (i.e. protein) may be necessary to increase adult performance. In agro-ecosystems, it is regarded that biological control using O. sauteri can be enhanced by application of sucrose solution as a food source.

Effects of Sugar Supply on Longevity and Progeny Production of an Aphid Parasitoid, Aphidius ervi (Hymeno-ptera: Aphidiidae) OAK
林, 佐季; 仲島, 義貴.
We investigated effects of sugar solution on adult longevity, progeny production and progeny sex ratio of Aphidius ervi in the presence and absence of host aphids. When female parasitoids were provided with 50% glucose–fructose solution in 1 : 1 ratio, they lived approximately twice longer than those provided with distilled water, irrespective of host aphid provision. The same effect of sugar solution was also observed on progeny production. When the parasitoid was fed sugar solution, its lifetime progeny production approximately doubled in comparison to that provided with water, whereas daily progeny production did not differ. Total number of female progeny did not differ between adult female provided with water and sugar solution, but significantly...

The current study was conducted to investigate the pathogenicity and its mode of action by Verticillium lecanii hybrid strains in different sedentary stages of Heterodera glycines. Three different sedentary stages (pale yellow female, yellow brown cyst, and dark brown cyst) of H. glycines were treated with V. lecanii and incubated for 3 weeks on water agar. After 3 weeks of incubation, eggs were investigated for the following parameters: (i) the infection frequencies of eggs, (ii) the number of eggs laid, and (iii) the number of mature and healthy eggs. Subsequently, the fecundity of H. glycines treated with V. lecanii was investigated in greater detail. Consequently, some strains had a greater ability to infect eggs and this significantly reduced the...

Fecundity of the pantropical fiddler crab Uca annulipes (H. Milne Edwards, 1837) (Brachyura: Ocypodidae) at Costa do Sol mangrove, Maputo bay, Southern Mozambique OceanDocs
Litulo, C..
Uca annulipes (H. Milne Edwards, 1837) is probably the most abundant brachyuran crab inhabiting mangrove forests in East Africa. However, its fecundity is poorly understood. Crabs were randomly sampled during spring low tides from January to April 2002 at Costa do Sol mangrove, Maputo Bay, southern Mozambique. Carapace width (CW), abdomen width (AW), weight (W) and egg numbers (EN) were recorded. The average fecundity was 1599 ± 842 eggs, ranging from 529 (CW = 5.0 mm) to 4250 (CW = 24.1 mm) eggs respectively. Egg number increased significantly with increase in crab size. This information contributes to our knowledge of the reproductive potential and the reproductive processes occurring in this species of crab.
