Ruminal silage degradability and productivity of forage and grain-type sorghum cultivars Scientia Agricola
Resende,José Antônio; Pereira,Marcos Neves; Pinho,Renzo Garcia Von; Fonseca,Abeilard Henrique; Silva,Aloísio Ricardo Pereira da.
Forages for feeding dairy cows should conciliate the potential for high dry matter yield per unit area, maximizing animal stocking rate, with high nutritive value, which enables decreasing the amount of concentrate feedstuffs per milk unit produced. Eighteen sorghum cultivars were cultivated 0.70 m apart and with 12 plants per linear meter. Plants harvested at the milk-to-dough stage were ensiled in the laboratory. Eleven agronomic and chemical traits were evaluated. Silage samples were incubated in situ and the effective ruminal dry matter degradation (DEF) was calculated assuming a fractional passage rate of -0.04 h-1. Dry matter yield was 13.0 ± 2.3 (mean ± S.D.) t ha-1. The neutral detergent fiber content was 50.3 ± 3.8 and the DEF was 48.8 ± 2.8% (dry...

Energy embodiment in Brazilian agriculture: an overview of 23 crops Scientia Agricola
Veiga,João Paulo Soto; Romanelli,Thiago Libório; Gimenez,Leandro Maria; Busato,Patrizia; Milan,Marcos.
The amount of energy required to produce a commodity or to supply a service varies from one production system to another and consequently giving rise to differing levels of environmental efficiency. Moreover, since energy prices have been continuously increasing over time, this energy amount may be a factor that has economic worth. Biomass production has a variety of end-products such as food, energy, and fiber; thus, taking into account the similarity in end-product of different crops (e.g.: sunflower, peanuts, or soybean for oil) it is possible to evaluate which crops require less energy per functional unit, such as starch, oil, and protein. This information can be used in decision-making about policies for food safety or bioenergy. In this study, 23...

Wine grape pomace flour improves blood pressure, fasting glucose and protein damage in humans: a randomized controlled trial Biol. Res.
Urquiaga,Inés; D'Acuna,Sonia; Pérez,Druso; Dicenta,Sara; Echeverria,Guadalupe; Rigotti,Attilio; Leighton,Federico.
BACKGROUND: The Mediterranean diet is a healthy diet with positive scientific evidence of preventing chronic diseases. Bioactive components support the healthy properties of the Mediterranean diet. Antioxidants and fiber, two components of the Mediterranean diet, are key functional nutrients for healthy eating and nutrition. Wine grape pomace is a rich source of these dietary constituents and may be beneficial for human health. Our hypothesis was that the intake of red wine grape pomace flour (WGPF) prepared from red wine grapes (Cabernet Sauvignon variety) reduced the metabolic syndrome in humans. To evaluate the effect of WGPF on components of metabolic syndrome we design a 16-week longitudinal intervention study. Thirty-eight males, 30-65 years of age,...

ABSTRACT Three Gossypium species have been used to breed cotton as they vary in their fiber production and resistance to stresses. Transcription factors (TFs) mostly are present in different copies or isoforms by which they conduct their regulation. Their copy number can determine organism behavior to a cue. Simple sequence repeats (SSRs) are one of the most informative and versatile molecular markers. Transcription factors of three Gossypium species were compared in silico. Seventy eight percent of TFs were common between the three species. Single copy for each species were 6057 TF. Gossypium hirsutum and G. raimondii shared the most common interspecific TF. Gossypium arboreum species-specific TF were the least. MYB TF family with its subfamilies is the...

Characterization of açaí (E. oleracea) fruits and its processing residues BABT
Pessoa,José Dalton Cruz; Arduin,Marcos; Martins,Maria Alice; Carvalho,José Edmar Urano de.
The aim of this work was to study the source of the açaí residue for its possible commercial applications by characterizing the fruit (fresh and dry mass), and performing an anatomic study of the pericarp from which were identified the origin of the anthocyanins, and fatty acids, and fibers; also the vascular system, its fibers constituents and fibrils were characterized. It was concluded that anthocyanins were located on the epiderm and external parenchyma, and that solids retained on the sieve come from the sclerenchyma, and that the fatty acids come from the storage parenchyma. The vascular tissue was formed by the fibers around 20 mm length. The length distribution of the fibrils had a mean length of 580µm.
