It is over 30 years since the development of fish tissue cultures led to the first confirmation of a viral infection in fish. Since that time, tissue cultures and, more usually, monolayer cell cultures, have been developed from a large number of fish species and have enabled the isolation from a large number of fish species and have enabled the isolation and study of 30 or so viral infections of fish, predominantly those of freshwater, catadromous and anadromous species, and particularly temperate species in the northern hemisphere. However, evidence for numerous other viral infections in fish has also been obtained without successful virus isolation through the visualisation of virus particles by electron microscopy or through experimental transmission of... |

How may fish domestication participate in sustainable development of aquaculture? The development of fish farming currently compensates for the stagnation of fishery catches while the market demand continues to increase. The development of fish farming relies on an active diversification of farmed fish species. A diversification based on the farming of native species could reduce the environmental impact of fish culture and could better fit to needs of local markets. Such development could also favour a more integrated local economy. In this context, the building of a generic approach for multi-species domestication is required to optimise the use of the technical and financial means available for fish culture diversification. |

Circannual, diel, and lunal periodic mechanisms in naturally reproducing stocks of tropical and subtropical fishes are reviewed. Manipulations of biological clocks, used to control reproduction in captive broodstocks, are detailed. Experiments to induce controlled maturation and spawning in fishes either test efficacy of changing environmental conditions (regimes), or constant environmental conditions (controlled). Data have been generated in experimental/scientific studies, as well as applied research. Effects of controlled environmental regimes on serum steroids, gametogenesis, spawning, fry performance and egg quality are summarized for selected members of Centropomidae, Serranidae, and Sciaenidae. |

The quick evolution of fish farming in Europe, and its development towards the open sea needs suitable farming tools. These tools must withstand the difficult sea states, but they must be easy to use, well adapted to the fish farming and not too much expensive. This book helps the design of such tools. It defines the solicitations of the sea on all the structures, and presents rules and methods to control these solicitations. Here, a structure is composed of a rearing support, a mooring system and equipments. This book describes these components, class them and gives lists of providers. The rearing support can be a cage, a group of cages or a boat. The support can float or to be submersible. The mooring system can be made up ropes, chains, anchors,... |

Growth and metabolism of juvenile European sea bass of a Western Mediterranean population were assessed at six constant temperatures (13, 16, 19, 22, 25 or 29 degreesC) in an 84-day trial. Duplicated groups of 84 fish (initial weight 80 I g) were held under O-2-concentrations close to saturation (87 mg l(-1)) and were fed to satiation. Mass gain increased as temperature increased from 13 to 25 degreesC. At 25 and 29 degreesC, growth was similar up to day 72, but a 6% decrease was observed by day 84 at 29 degreesC. Days 0-84 specific growth rates (SGR) were 0.45%,1.29% and 1.21% day(-1) at 13, 25 and 29 degreesC, respectively. The estimated temperature (7) for maximum SGR was 26 degreesC (SGR = 1.715 - 0.322T + 0.022T(2) - 4.233e(-4)T(3)). Feed intake (FI)... |

Marine capture fisheries in Jamaica is primarily artisanal in nature ansd is conducted maiinly by fishermen operating from canoes. Approximately 95% of these fishermen operate on the coastal shelf and its associated banks. The commercial species harvested comprise bottom-dwelling, coral reef species and free swimming species of finfish. Other fishery resources of commercial value include marine shrimp, conch and lobsters. Catch statistics are not available for all species, but the Department of Fisheries reports a slight decline in fishery production with production decreasing from 16 milion lbs in 1990, despite the fact that fishing efforts have doubled. Over this period the number of registered fishermen has grown from 12 000 to 16 000, al of whom are... |

Different pH levels of water in the incubation and larviculture of 'curimbatá' (Prochilodus lineatus) were tested to evaluate the effect of this variable on the survival and development of eggs and larvae. During incubation, pH of 5.0, 6.0, 7.0, 8.0, and 8.5 was tested. To observe the effects of pH on larvae with different hatchery histories, the following experimental design was utilised (pH incubation - pH larviculture): L 6-6; L 6-7; L 7-6; L 7-7; L 7-8; L 8-7; L 8-8; L 8.5-7, and L 8.5-8.5. At pH 5.0 and four hours after incubation, an almost total mortality of incubated eggs was seen. Eggs incubated at pH 6.0 to 8.5 had similar fertilization and survival rates at the end of incubation, although eggs and larvae incubated at pH 6.0 had a smaller... |

The first phase of the project (1978 –19850 on fish seed abundance in Nigerian coastal waters was completed and published in 1985 proceedings of Fisheries Society of Nigeria (FISON). The second phase (1986 –1989) explored further, breeding grounds, nursery and schooling areas and traditional fishing gears used by local fishermen in the collection of seeds. An assessment is made of the destructive effects of industrial pollutants, oil installations, erosion, modern coastal developments, and tides in the distribution and abundance of seeds within the estuaries, creeks lagoons coastal rivers and their tributaries. Analysis of data collected showed a drastic reduction of an estimated 100 million fish seeds, Ezenwa et al (1985) to 51.7 million at the end of... |
