Genetic analysis of visual scores and their relationships to mature female weight in Nellore breed R. Bras. Zootec.
Regatieri,Inaê Cristina; Boligon,Arione Augusti; Albuquerque,Lucia Galvão de.
Data from 79,884 Nellore breed animals were used to estimate genetic parameters and to evaluate the relationships among scores of conformation, precocity and musculature obtained at weaning and after yearling ages and weight of mature females. It was used the restricted maximum likelihood method in a multi-trait analysis with the model that included direct additive genetic and residual effects, as random effects, and the fixed effects of contemporary group and, as covariables, animal age at weighing and age of dam at calving (except for weight of females at adult age). Contemporary groups at weaning were defined by the variables: sex, herd, year and month of birth, and management group at birth and weaning. For definition of contemporary group at yearling,...

Sousa Júnior,Severino Cavalcante de; Diaz,Iara Del Pilar Solar; Santos,Karina Rodrigues dos; Sousa,José Ernandes Rufino de; Sarmento,José Lindenberg Rocha; Martins Filho,Raimundo.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of genotype by environment interaction (GEI) on the weight of Tabapuã cattle at 240 (W240), 365 (W365) and 450 (W450) days of age. In total, 35,732 records of 8,458 Tabapuã animals which were born in the state of Bahia, Brazil, from 1975 to 2001, from 167 sires and 3,707 dams, were used. Two birth seasons were tested as for the environment effect: the dry (D) and rainy (R) ones. The covariance components were obtained by a multiple-trait analysis using Bayesian inference, in which each trait was considered as being different in each season. Covariance components were estimated by software gibbs2f90. As for W240, the model was comprised of contemporary groups and cow age (in classes) as fixed effects;...

Genetic parameters for milk production by using random regression models with different alternatives of fixed regression modeling R. Bras. Zootec.
Cobuci,Jaime Araújo; Costa,Claudio Napolis; Braccini Neto,José; Freitas,Ary Ferreira de.
Records of test-day milk yields of the first three lactations of 25,500 Holstein cows were used to estimate genetic parameters for milk yield by using two alternatives of definition of fixed regression of the random regression models (RRM). Legendre polynomials of fourth and fifth orders were used to model regression of fixed curve (defined based on averages of the populations or multiple sub-populations formed by grouping animals which calved at the same age and in the same season of the year) or random lactation curves (additive genetic and permanent enviroment). Akaike information criterion (AIC) and Bayesian information criterion (BIC) indicated that the models which used multiple regression of fixed lactation curves of lactation multiple regression...

Estimation of genetic parameters for weight traits and Kleiber Index in a Brahman cattle population Scientia Agricola
Manuel,Matos; Cavani,Ligia; Millen,Danilo Domingues; Andrighetto,Cristiana; Lupatini,Gelci Carlos; Fonseca,Ricardo da.
ABSTRACT: Interest in improving feed efficiency of cattle has been increasing. The residual feed intake (RFI), the most commonly used measurement of feed efficiency, is expensive and can only be used in a small number of animals. The Kleiber Index has also been proposed to measure RFI. In this study, we estimated genetic parameters for the Kleiber Index average daily weight gain and adjusted weights to obtain a more comprehensive understanding of potential responses to selection and support the development of breeding strategies. Genetic analyses were conducted on animal records from a data file with 36,505 animals recorded by ABCZ (Brazilian Association of Zebu Breeders). Restricted maximum likelihood estimates of genetic parameters were computed with...

Reis Neto,Rafael Vilhena; Oliveira,Carlos Antônio Lopes de; Ribeiro,Ricardo Pereira; Freitas,Rilke Tadeu Fonseca de; Allaman,Ivan Bezerra; Oliveira,Sheila Nogueira de.
The main factor considered in breeding programs for fish is growth, which can be assessed in terms of a gain in either weight or body measurements. This study was undertaken to evaluate the morphometric traits of GIFT strain tilapia (Oreochromis sp.) selected for weight gain. The data set used contained information on 6,650 animals. The genetic values of 8,590 animals in a relationship matrix of five generations were predicted. The following morphometric measurements were evaluated: standard length; body depth and body width. Body area and volume were also calculated. Bi-character analyses involving morphometric traits were used to estimate (co)variance components. Heritability, larval and fingerling common environmental effects were estimated for each...

Inferences on the effects of selection for feed conversion over meat quality traits in broiler Scientia Agricola
Paiva,José Teodoro de; Mourão,Gerson Barreto; Ferraz,José Bento Sterman; Mattos,Elisângela Chicaroni; Michelan Filho,Tércio; Campos,Bárbara Machado; Eler,Joanir Pereira; Gaya,Leila de Genova.
ABSTRACT: The intense selection process for economic traits conducted by the poultry breeding programs has been caused several changes in broiler meat quality. A database belonging to a selection program of a broiler male line was used to estimate heritability and genetic correlations for feed conversion ratio and meat quality traits, which were: initial and final pH, lightness, drip loss, thawing loss and shear force. Two-trait analyses were performed and the components of co(variance) and genetic parameters were determined using the Bayesian approach and the GIBBS3F90 software. The heritability estimate found for feed conversion ratio (0.52) showed high influence of direct additive genetic effects on the expression of this trait; therefore, this trait is...

Genetic association between longevity and linear type traits of Holstein cows Scientia Agricola
Kern,Elisandra Lurdes; Cobuci,Jaime Araujo; Costa,Cláudio Napolis; McManus,Concepta Margaret; Braccini Neto,José.
Longevity is a desirable trait in the dairy industry because of its relationship to profitability. The aim of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for longevity measurements related to productive life, or life in the herd, and linear type traits of Brazilian Holstein cows born between the years 1990 and 2008. The (co) variance components were estimated by the restricted maximum likelihood method. The heritability for measurements of longevity and linear type traits ranged from 0.05 to 0.07 and 0.08 to 0.39, respectively. The genetic correlations between measurements of longevity and linear type traits ranged from -0.39 to 0.31. Direct selection for longevity does not necessarily lead to long-lived cows, due to low heritability. Indirect genetic...

Genetic correlation between traits in the ESALQ-PB1 maize population divergently selected for tassel size and ear height Scientia Agricola
Farias Neto,Austeclínio Lopes; Miranda Filho,José Branco de.
Full-sib and selfed (S1) progenies were obtained from sub-populations of ESALQ-PB1, divergently selected for tassel size (T+ and T-) and ear height (E+ and E-), and used for estimating genetic and phenotypic correlation coefficients between traits. The analyzed traits were: EW- total ear weight (g/plant), PH- plant height (cm), EH- ear height (cm), TB- tassel branch number and TL- tassel length. The highest genetic (rG) and phenotypic (rF) correlation was observed for the combination PH x EH, as expected, with average of 0.800 and 0.778, respectively over sub-populations and locations. It is apparent that divergent selection for tassel size did not affect greatly the correlation between PH and EH in the full sib progenies, but in the inbred progenies the...

Currently, Brachiaria brizantha Stapf is the tropical grass with the largest cultivated area in Brazil, being responsible for a major part of the seed market and for the increase in animal production. There are several superior genotypes available in germplasm banks, collected from the African continent and in need of evaluation. The selection of these genotypes must be based on predicted genotype values of the individuals in function of being perennial plants and of unsexed propagation. The standard procedure for the prediction of genetic values is the individual BLUP (Best Linear Unbiased Predictor), using estimates of variance components achieved by the restricted maximum likelihood (REML) on an individual model. With the aim of selecting B. brizantha...

Influence of genotype-environment interaction on the classification of Nellore bulls in Southern Brazil Animal Sciences
Bresolin, Tiago; Everling, Dionéia Magda; Rorato, Paulo Roberto Nogara; Braz, Camila Urbano; Breda, Fernanda Cristina.
The aim of this study was to assess the occurrence of genotype-environment interaction, as well as its effects on the magnitude of genetic parameters and the classification of Nellore breeding bulls for the trait adjusted weight at 205 days (W205) on Southern Brazil. The components of (co)variance were estimated by Bayesian inference, using a linear-linear animal model in a bi-trait analysis. The proposed model for the analyses considers as random the direct additive genetic and maternal effects and residual effects, and as fixed effects the contemporary groups, sex, season of birth and weighing, and calving age as covariable  (linear and quadratic effects). The a posteriori mean estimates of the direct heritabilities for W205 in the three States varied...

Genetic parameters for performance and carcass traits in a paternal 1 lineage of broiler Anais da ABC (AABC)
CRUZ,VALDECY A.R.; GRUPIONI,NATALIA V.; MENDONÇA,GABRIELA G.; VENTURINI,GUILHERME C.; LEDUR,MONICA C.; PEIXOTO,JANE O.; MUNARI,DANISIO P..
Abstract The objective of this study was to estimate variance components for performance and carcass traits in a paternal broiler line. The (co)variance components were estimated by the restricted maximum likelihood method applied to the animal model, including the fixed effect of group (sex and hatch) and additive genetic and residual as random effects. Estimated heritability for performance traits ranged from 0.09 to 0.42. The genetic correlations between traits ranged from -0.50 to 0.97. The heritability estimates of feed intake, weight gain, and feed conversion from 35 to 41 days of age were of low magnitude. The genetic correlations among them were favorable to genetic selection. These results suggest that moderate genetic gain can be obtained to the...

Ribeiro,Jeferson Corrêa; Silva,Luciano Pinheiro da; Soares,Aline Camporez Crispim; Caetano,Giovani da Costa; Leite,Carla Daniela Suguimoto; Bonafé,Cristina Moreira; Sousa,Mariele Freitas; Torres,Robledo de Almeida.
ABSTRACT: We estimated genetic and phenotypic parameters for egg production in meat-type quails aiming to propose an optimal age for selection through partial record egg production. Data of 3,503 female quails from two strains (namely, UFV1, with 1,811 and UFV2 with 1,692 females) were used. Egg production was assessed by the number of eggs recorded after 42 days of age and each partial period consisted on 35 days of egg production forward. Covariance components were estimated by using single and bivariate animal model, comprising each partial period of egg production and full egg production period (one year of egg laying). Regarding strain UFV1, heritability estimates ranges from 0.03 to 0.16, and for strain UFV2 0.20 to 0.25. The highest genetic...
