Reaction of detached fruíts from selected cocoa clones to artificial inoculation with Phytophthora palmivora Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Rodríguez Polanco,Leonora; Carrero Gutiérrez,Martha Liliana; Bayardo Parra,Edinson; Segura Amaya,Jose Dimas.
Abstract Black pod rot (BPR), caused by several species of the genus Phytophthora, is one of the most limiting diseases for the production of cocoa as it appears in all of the producing regions of the world and generates significant losses. The aim of this study was to establish the response to this infection in six cacao clones (EET8, IMC67, TSH565, PA46, ICS95, and CCN51), through an inoculation test on detached fruits using five P. palmivora isolates from five producing regions. The incidence and severity of the disease in the detached pods were evaluated at six and ten days after inoculation (DAI). Clone CCN51 was classified as susceptible, and clones IMC67 and PA46 as moderately susceptible at six DAI. All the clones evaluated were categorized as...

Selection of interspecific Psidium spp. hybrids resistant to Meloidogyne enterolobii Agronomy
Ribeiro, Rodrigo Moreira; Martins Gomes, Vicente; Pio Viana, Alexandre; Moreira Souza, Ricardo; Santos, Paulo Ricardo dos.
Since 2001, the disease known as 'guava decline', resulting from the interaction between the phytonematode Meloidogyne enterolobii and the fungus Fusarium solanie, has caused direct and indirect economic losses to the entire guava production chain. Given the lack of sources of resistance in guava genotypes, interspecific hybrids of Psidium spp. were obtained for resistance to the nematode M. enterolobii. To classify the level of resistance of the interspecific hybrids, we evaluated the plant classification methodologies proposed by Oostenbrink (1966) and Moura and Régis (1987). Estimates of genetic parameters were obtained using the REML/BLUP approach. Interspecific hybrids resistant to M. enterolobii were selected that can be used as rootstocks or in new...

Phytophthora infestans (Mont.) de Bary. I. Host-Pathogen specificity and resistance components Agrociencia
Lozoya-Saldaña,Héctor; Guzmán-Galindo,Leonel; Fernández-Pavia,Sylvia; Grünwald,Niklaus J.; McElhinny,Elaine.
Abstract The molecular identity of Phytophthora infestans strains infecting potatoes in the Toluca Valley has been documented. Nevertheless, the relationship of the P. infestans genotypes to the host’s genetic resistance is unclear. In order to identify potential host-pathogen specificity, isolates of the oomycete obtained from five potato varieties with differing levels of disease resistance were compared regarding mating type (MT), isozyme genotype for glucose-6-phosphate isomerase (Gpi) and peptidase (Pep), and sensitivity to metalaxyl. Also, host resistance components and specificity on the host-pathogen interaction were assessed twice in detached leaves in the laboratory and once in attached leaves in the greenhouse for three of the varieties. No...

Potential of popcorn germplasm as a source of resistance to ear rot Bragantia
Kurosawa,Railan do Nascimento Ferreira; Amaral Junior,Antonio Teixeira do; Vivas,Janieli Maganha Silva; Guimarães,Amanda Gonçalves; Miranda,Samila Barbosa; Dias,Vicente Mussi; Scapim,Carlos Alberto.
ABSTRACT Because of its multi-purpose nature, popcorn has sparked the interest of the World Trade Organization as regards fungal contamination by mycotoxins. However, no investigations have been conducted on popcorn for resistance of genotypes to ear rot. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential of popcorn genotypes as to resistance to ear rot and rotten kernels, as an initial step for the implementation of a breeding program with the popcorn crop in Northern Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. Thirty-seven accessions from different ecogeographic regions of Latin America were evaluated in 2 cultivation periods, in a randomized block design with 4 replications. We evaluated the incidence of rotten ears, incidence of rotten ears caused by Fusarium spp.,...

Popcorn germplasm resistance to fungal diseases caused by Exserohilum turcicum and Bipolaris maydis Bragantia
Kurosawa,Railan do Nascimento Ferreira; Vivas,Marcelo; Amaral,Antonio Teixeira do; Ribeiro,Rodrigo Moreira; Miranda,Samila Barbosa; Pena,Guilherme Ferreira; Leite,Jhean Torres; Mora,Freddy.
ABSTRACT Compared with the common corn, popcorn shows greater susceptibility to pests and diseases occurrence, being the use of resistant cultivars the most efficient strategy. In this regard, Germplasm Banks deserve special attention because they contain accessions that can be used as sources of resistance in breeding programs. The State University of Northern Rio de Janeiro (UENF) maintains a popcorn Germplasm Bank with accessions from tropical and temperate countries, including Diversity Centers for the species. In this study, we investigated the performance of 37 popcorn accessions landraces, hybrids, and inbreed lines ― from the Germplasm Collection of UENF’s Popcorn Breeding Program with respect to the fungal leaf diseases northern leaf blight (NLB)...

Cytokines produced by susceptible and resistant mice in the course of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis infection BJMBR
Calich,V.L.G.; Kashino,S.S..
Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is the most prevalent deep mycosis in Latin America and presents a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations. We established a genetically controlled murine model of PCM, where A/Sn mice develop an infection which mimics the benign disease (immune responses which favor cellular immunity) and B10.A animals present the progressive disseminated form of PCM (preferential activation of B cells and impairment of cellular immune responses). To understand the immunoregulatory phenomena associated with resistance and susceptibility in experimental PCM, A/Sn and B10.A mice were studied regarding antigen-elicited secretion of monokines (TNF-a and TGF-ß) and type-1 (IL-2 and IFN-<FONT...

Resistance of potato clones to necrotic recombinant strains of potato virus y (pvy) Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Ribeiro,Silvia Regina Rodrigues de Paula; Pinto,César Augusto Brasil Pereira; Costa,Suellen Bárbara Ferreira Galvino; Menezes,Mariney de; Figueira,Antonia dos Reis.
The Ry adg allele is widely used by breeders to confer extreme resistance to all strains of PVY. However, the necrotic strain has increased recombination resulting in recent considerable losses in productivity. Thus far, not all necrotic recombinant strains of PVY have been tested for their reaction to the Ry gene. The objective of this study was to identify potato clones carrying the resistant allele and to assess their reaction to the following recombinant strains: NTN (PVY NTN), Wilga (PVY N-Wi), and "curly top" (PVY E). Advanced clones from the potato breeding program at Universidade Federal de Lavras were evaluated through a specific molecular marker for the Ry adg allele. The clones carrying the resistance allele were grafted on tobacco plants...
