Today, consumer awareness on the healthiness of their foodstuff increases. The main focus is on secondary metabolites and antioxidants. Broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. convar. botrytis Alef. var. italica Plenck) has many compounds beneficial for human health, like Vitamin C, Carotionoids or Anthocyanins. To investigate these compounds two techniques are used in this study which are non-destructive sensor measurements (Multiplex®) to determine the value of anthocyanins (ANTH_RG) and flavonols (FLAV) and measurements of the antioxidant potential (water- (ACW) and lipid- (ACL) soluble antioxidants) on the basis of chemoluminescence. Field trials in autumn of 2011 and spring of 2012 were conducted in a randomized block design with different broccoli genotypes,... |

There is an ongoing discussion amongst researchers and farmers involved in organic horticulture concerning the role that F1 hybrid varieties should play in organic farming. Proponents of hybrids state that their use is already much established in organic farming and that it would be a step backwards to dispense with them. Agronomic superiority of hybrids over open pollinated (OP) varieties is often claimed. Opponents to hybrid varieties claim that heterosis puts an emphasis on biomass accumulation and yield but that the more subtle aspects of ripening and creation of aroma are neglected in hybrid varieties. Project aims including target group: To characterize F1 and OP varieties of carrots in a 2-year field trial. Analytical and sensory parameters are... |

Organic Agriculture is especially affected by the increasing spread of stem rust in rye (Puccinia graminis f. sp. secalis) because there is a lack of resistant cultivars in Germany. To analyze the virulence situation of rye stem rust, 71 single-pustule-isolates were established and 30 of those were tested with a differential set consisting of 19 lines. The isolates could be classified into 22 different pathotypes. Only seven pathotypes could be found more than once. Most of the isolates showed a complexity of five virulences. In a preliminary analysis a Simpson index of 0,98 was found indicating a high level of diversity of German stem rust populations. Nine of 19 tested lines reacted fully resistant in seedling stage. In 2011, 70 and 30 rye populations,... |

The response from field trials is subject to random variation. This means that two neighbouring plots grown with the same variety and treated in the same way will always yield differently. This also applies to all other recordings made on a continuous scale. The size of the differences will depend on several circumstances such as the variability in the soil, variability in the applied fertilizer, historical events and uncertainty in the recording process. This means that a recorded difference between e.g. two varieties may be due to either a true difference in the response of the two varieties or may be due to random variations. In order to help decide whether the difference is caused by the different varieties or by random variation it is necessary to... |

State of the Art: Organically acceptable seed treatments are partly available, but they need improvements and adjustments for the various vegetable seeds. Definition of the problem: Search for methods and products that are compatible with the standards of organic agriculture in order to improve seed health. Project aims including target group: Improvements and adjustments for the various vegetable seeds. For farmers, seed multipliers and breeders. Methodology: Literature studies, laboratory experiments, on farm trials Results, conclusion, state of the art: Physical seed treatments are most promising, several plant extracts seem to be useful, however, fine tuning of the methods fro various vegetable seeds is necessary. |

While grain legumes can be regarded as highly valuable protein source for animal nutrition, certain drawbacks inhibit their use as sole foodstuff for livestock. The nutrient quality is reduced by low concentrations of tryptophan and sulfur amino acids. In the past substantial breeding effort has been invested in the reduction of antinutritional components and disease resistance while the protein quality has not been a focal point. To improve the protein quality the elevation of the low sulfur amino acid content is of prominent importance especially for organic production where high methionine feed components are rare. The present work tries to establish a method to select methionine enriched grain legumes for further breeding steps. Agronomical important... |

From the Introduction to the Proceedings "The European Consortium for Organic Plant Breeding (ECO-PB) is an active network supporting the production and use of organic seeds. It sees the European Union’s Organic Seed Regime as potentially a great step forward for in the development of organic seed but is concerned about the latest discussions regarding implementation per January 1st 2004. Current European Commission proposals seem to allow a great deal of room for derogation. Seed companies are indicating that this year (2003) their organic seed sales have already dropped. Growers are aware that the probable new rules will allow derogation even for those crops for which there is sufficient, appropriate organic seeds. A number of key seed companies... |

Wheat genetic resources may be grown in organic farming systems or in less favourable areas for bread wheat species. Characteristics of hulled wheat species (23 varieties of einkorn, emmer wheat, spelt wheat) were studied and evaluated within a two-year trial period (which was executed on certified organic fields) and they were compared to characteristics of landraces and modern bread wheat varieties. The main aim of our study was to evaluate the potential uses of genetic resources of wheat in organic farming. The hulled wheat species were resistant to mildew and brown rust. Their grains were less contaminated with DON than the grains of the control varieties. The grain yield rate was reduced. Per hectare crude protein yield was higher in spelt and emmer... |

Today only few commercial vine grape cultivars are commercially cultivated. Their potential is still behind the standard but highly susceptible varieties. Organic viticulture in a humid climate like in Switzerland is difficult to achieve, mainly due to the high disease pressure of Plasmopora viticola and Unicula Necator. Beside improved natural plant protection spray strategies and products, we put emphasis on disease resistant cultivars to overcome the problem. Project aims - To find grape vine cultivars showing at the same time high wine quality and disease resistance. Methodology - At Frick, under 100 % organic conditions we carry out a “Top-Ten-Trial” with the 10 most promising cultivars in 4 replicates at 50 vine plants each. Thus, there... |
