Evading Farm Support Reduction via Efficient Input Use: The Case of Greek Cotton Growers AgEcon
Pantzios, Christos J.; Rozakis, Stelios; Tzouvelekas, Vangelis.
The present paper examines the importance that efficient resource use may have for cotton growers under the current EU policy regime. To that end, input-oriented technical and scale efficiency score for a sample of 172 cotton-growing farms are empirically quantified. The results suggest that cotton farms in the sample are not efficient mainly due to the nature of the policy regime governing the sector throughout EU. By becoming efficient, the co-responsibility levy will be reduced by 18.3% and farms may increase their profits by 50.1% on the average.

Comparison of Industrial Dynamics of Food and Beverage Industry in Bulgaria, Romania and Greece AgEcon
Kopeva, Diana Ilieva; Shterev, Nikolay; Blagoev, Dimitar.
Industry dynamic is a key indicator for sustainable industry growth. It depends on variety of factors on international and regional level. One of the important driving forces on international level is seen in the face of economic and political alliances. Cultural and regional policies, and social behaviour are driving industry dynamics on a regional level though. Our hypothesis is that specific differences of industrial dynamics of the Balkan countries occurred based on economic and political alliances (EU membership; Euro zone, Black Sea Economic Cooperation). This hypothesis is verified with analysis of a traditional for the Balkans industrial sector like Food and Beverage. The paper aims to find out more evidence to verify a basic hypothesis. It...

Investigating a Paradigm of Food System Sustainability:The Case of Fresh Vegetable Production and Distribution in Crete AgEcon
Apostolides, Kristy; Kambourakis, Emmanouil.
In opposition to the current paradigm of the globalized the food system, many regional initiatives have arisen to reorganize the food system into localized or regionalized supply chains. This study explores the existing food supply chain for field fruit and vegetable production within the island of Crete, Greece, by examining the production and distribution of food stuffs through the wholesale system and to determining the geographic and retail terminal points for these Cretan-produced items. Through case studies, this paper examines the typology of production and maps the distribution of vegetables and melons produced on the island as the first step to determining the current level of food system sustainability, and opportunities and barriers for greater...

Assessing the Perspectives of EU Cotton Farming: Technical and Scale Efficiencies of Greek Cotton Growers AgEcon
Pantzios, Christos J.; Rozakis, Stelios; Tzouvelekas, Vangelis.
Utilizing the stochastic frontier approach, this paper estimates output and input-oriented technical and scale efficiency levels for a sample of cotton-growing farms in Thessaly, Greece. The empirical results suggest that Greek cotton farm operations are technically and scale inefficient. There is a considerable scope for improvement in resource use and thereby in farm income of cotton farms; Greek cotton farmers could reduce production costs by 20.4%, making more efficient utilization of the existing production technology. Factors responsible for the technical efficiency differentials observed among cotton-growers include the farmer's age and education as well as the farm's land fragmentation and output specialization.

Consumer Behaviour towards Own Label: monitoring the Greek experience AgEcon
Boutsouki, Christina; Zotos, Yorgos; Masouti, Zafeiria.
In Greece, the traditional perceptions of private label were once of low quality, unbranded alternatives, attracting the most cost-conscious consumers. In today’s private label market, however, a different level of products has emerged – the premium “branded” private label product. Based on a consumer survey conducted in Greece, the current study discusses consumer’s attitude and satisfaction with respect to private label products. Frequency of purchase and consumer characteristics are also discussed in light of empirical evidence.

New entrants policy into agriculture: researching new farmers’ satisfaction Rev. Econ. Sociol. Rural
Chatzitheodoridis,Fotios; Kontogeorgos,Achilleas.
Abstract: During the last three decades, the European Union has adopted a series of policies aiming to increase the new farmers entering the primary sector. This scheme, namely the “New Entrants Policy”, is reflected to the relevant regulations of the Common Agricultural Policy. After many years of implementation, there is still limited information regarding young farmers’ perceptions and participation to this scheme. Against this backdrop, a questionnaire was developed in order to assess the degree of new farmer’s satisfaction on their decision to enter the agricultural sector by participating in this scheme. Furthermore, we tried to evaluate the factors and motivations that determined their decision. The survey was carried out in Greece during an...

Wild vegetables do not lie: Comparative gastronomic ethnobotany and ethnolinguistics on the Greek traces of the Mediterranean Diet of southeastern Italy Acta Botanica
Pieroni,Andrea; Cattero,Valentina.
ABSTRACT Bio-cultural and historical aspects of the “wild plant” portion of the Mediterranean Diet are still very much understudied despite the large number of bio-medical studies on the topic. The current gastronomic ethnobotanical and ethnolinguistic field study focused on the wild leafy vegetables used among Greek populations in SE Italy and NE Greece. A total of 52 folk taxa, corresponding to 58 wild botanical species, were recorded. The frequency of consumption of these wild ingredients was higher in NE Greece than in SE Italy, although approximately one-third of the recorded wild taxa overlapped in the two study sites. Most of these common species were designated by cognates, having in most cases a clear Greek origin, while one-third of the recorded...

Classification of Potential Sheep Heat-Stress Levels According to the Prevailing Meteorological Conditions CIGR Journal
Dimitris K. Papanastasiou.
Many researchers have found that physiology, welfare, health, and productivity of ruminants are significantly affected when they are exposed to heat-stress conditions. In such cases, heat-stress may also cause a reduction of farmers’ profit in various ways. Heat-stress levels are significantly affected by the prevailing meteorological conditions. This paper aims to study the potential daily peak heat-stress conditions to which sheep are exposed and to classify them according to the prevailing meteorological conditions. For these purposes, temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and incoming solar radiation data were analyzed. The meteorological data were recorded during the summers of the period 2007 – 2012 by an automated...

Optimal Financial Insulation Thickness of a Broiler House CIGR Journal
Panagakis- FBC, Panagiotis; Manolakos, Dimitris; Axaopoulos, Petros.
A common method for environmental control in livestock facilities is to use thermal insulation for exterior walls and roof. In regions with cool winters increasing the insulation thickness decreases the heating requirements, however in regions with hot summers may lead to unwanted increase of inside temperature, thus intensifying cooling loads. It is worth noting that financial thickness optimization of a broiler house external walls and gable roofs insulation for different orientations has not been sufficiently addressed, thus a detailed transient simulation was used to model existing energy audited broiler house and to calculate its annual heating and cooling loads. For that, hourly climatic data and all the heat and moisture gains and losses resulting...

Invasiveness of Cut-Leaf Ground-Cherry (Physalis angulata L.) Populations and Impact of Soil Water and Nutrient Availability Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Travlos,Ilias S.
Biological invasions are a major threat to natural ecosystems and agroecosystems, while weed flora is noticeably changing globally. In this study we evaluated the potential of cut-leaf ground-cherry (Physalis angulata L.), a species native to America, to invade the semi-arid regions of Greece. Greenhouse and laboratory experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of different environmental resources (nutrient and water availability) on seedling growth, biomass production, fecundity, and seed germination of four populations of cut-leaf ground-cherry. Our results suggest that cut-leaf ground-cherry does not tolerate extreme drought during the first growth stages, while it can survive and produce adequate and rapidly germinated seed (> 85%) under low...
