Organic dairy farming and sustainability Organic Eprints
Leiber, Florian; Müller, Adrian; Maurer, Veronika; Schader, Christian; Bieber, Anna.
The main cornerstones for enhancing the credibility of the organic dairy sector are: a) to realize an efficient roughage-based production, which requires significantly less inputs from arable land than conventional systems without producing more GHG emissions per unit of products as a whole; b) to enhance dairy cows’ health and welfare, indicated by a clearly improved longevity; and c) to develop the right matches between local conditions (in particular available feed sources) and cow genotypes, in order to achieve functioning systems with the lowest possible need for external nutrient sources.

Development of animal health and welfare planning in organic dairy farming in Europe Organic Eprints
Vaarst, Mette; Leeb, Christine; Nicholas, Pip; Roderick, Stephen; Smolders, Gidi; Walkenhorst, Micheal; Brinkman, Jan; March, Solveig; Stöger, Elisabeth; Gratzer, Elisabeth; Winckler, Christoph; Lund, Wonne; Henriksen, Britt I.F.; Hansen, Berit; Neale, Madeleine; Whistance, Lindsay K..
Good animal health and welfare is an explicit goal of organic livestock farming, and will need continuous development and adjustment on the farms. Furthermore, the very different conditions in different regions of Europe calls for models that can be integrated into local practice and be relevant for each type of farming context. A European project with participants from seven countries have been established with the aim of developing principles for animal health and welfare planning in organic dairy farming, based on a process where knowledge about the status within a given herd will be included as background for taking decisions and planning future improvements. An important part of the planning process is communication with other farmers as well as...

Risk factors contributing to udder health depression during alpine summer pasturing in Swiss dairy herds. Organic Eprints
Walkenhorst, Michael; Spranger, Jörg; Klocke, Peter; Schären, Walter.
One third of Swiss agricultural land is high altitude grassland. 15% of all Swiss dairy cows feed there for about 2 to 5 months during the summer. About 30 % of all alpine bulk milk samples of the Swiss province “Graubünden” exceeded the somatic cell count (SCC) of 350’000/ml. The objective of this project was to evaluate factors effecting increasing SCC on alpine pastures. Foremilk quarter samples of all lactating cows of 3 high-altitude sites (n= 128 cows) were taken once on the 12 farm valley sites (v) and three times during the summer on the alpine sites (a1 to a3). Quarter samples were investigated for microbial pathogens and SCC. Lactation number and lactation days of the cow were recorded. In the statistical models for the three alpine control dates...

Animal health of ruminants: A summary of research conducted under the German Federal Programme for Organic Agriculture and other forms of Sustainable Agriculture Organic Eprints
Anon, AN.
Between 2002 and 2003, a survey established the status quo of organic dairy and beef production. A questionnaire was sent to 750 farms, supplemented by an on-site survey of 100 farms that supplied data on livestock performance, profitability, feeding, animal health and housing conditions. In a num-ber of the 74 dairy farms investigated, deficiencies regarding animal welfare were found, because recommendations for disease prevention had been implemented poorly. In the production of suckler cows only a few problems were identified; the main obstacle to further development of organic cattle rearing was considered to be the low prices paid to producers. A further study looked at what preventive measures against the major disease groups of mastitis, lameness,...

Overlevelse af sundhedsskadelige mikroorganismer (bakterier/vira) eller parasitter ved slangeudlægning og nedfældning af gylle? Organic Eprints
Thamsborg, Stig Milan; Katakam, Kiran Kumar; Pedersen, Heidi Huus; Mejer, Helena.

Monitoring the welfare of sheep in conventional and organic farms using an ANI 35 L derived method Organic Eprints
Napolitano, Prof Fabio; De Rosa, Dr Giuseppe; Ferrante, Dr Valentina; Braghieri, Dr Ada; Barbieri, S..
The present study was undertaken to evaluate the inter-observer reliability of a welfare monitoring scheme to be applied to sheep, and compare the welfare state of the animals between 10 organic and 10 conventional sheep farms. No significant differences were observed between organic and conventional farms in terms of housing characteristics and animal based parameters (P>0.10). This result may be due to the fact that most of the farms, both conventional and organic, based their farming systems on an extensive use of the land by grazing animals. The monitoring protocol proved to be feasible (the mean time needed to perform the assessment of welfare was 45 min per farm) and reliable: a significant correlation between observers was observed for total...

The process of researching animal health and welfare planning Organic Eprints
March, Solveig; Brinkmann, Jan; Winckler, Christoph; Whistance, Lindsay; Roderick, Stephen; Vaarst, Mette; Smolders, Gidi.
’Minimising medicine use in organic dairy herds through animal health and welfare planning’, ANIPLAN, is a CORE-Organic project which was initiated in June 2007. The main aim of the project is to investigate active and well planned animal health and welfare promotion and disease prevention as a means of minimising medicine use in organic dairy herds. This aim will be met through the development of animal health and welfare planning principles for organic dairy farms under diverse conditions based on an evaluation of current experiences. This also includes application of animal health and welfare assessment across Europe. In order to bring this into practice the project also aims at developing guidelines for communication about animal health and welfare...

Investigation on the influence of nematophagous fungi as feed additive on nematode infection risk of sheep and goats on pasture Organic Eprints
Epe, C.; Holst, C.; Koopmann, R.; Schnieder, T.; Larsen, M.; von Samson-Himmelstjerna, G..
Gastrointestinal nematodes in small ruminants cause high economic losses. Thus on most farms anthelmintic treatment is required. In response to increasing problems with anthelmintic resistance, biological control, for example the use of nematophagous fungi, has received significant attention. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of Duddingtonia flagrans orally applied to small ruminants on natural infection with gastrointestinal nematodes in a field study in Northern Germany. 20 goats and 20 sheep were fed daily for 3 months with 5x105 spores of D. flagrans per kg bodyweight. Differences in body weight, faecal egg count and larval development in faeces and on pasture in comparison with same-sized control groups were analysed. After 3 months...

Biologische Helminthenkontrolle bei Weidetieren mit nematophagen Pilzen Organic Eprints
Hertzberg, Hubertus; Larsen, Michael; Maurer, Veronika.

Welfare of organic poultry Organic Eprints
Zeltner, Esther; Maurer, Veronika.
Organic poultry production has substantially increased in the last few years. On organic farms, welfare of poultry is enhanced due to enriched housing conditions as access to a free range area. This may reduce feather pecking and keep the health status at least on the same level as on conventional farms. However, welfare of organic poultry may be further improved if: (a) laying hens are already reared in enriched systems that are close to the systems in the layer house, (b) a frequent and even use of the run, (c) selection of suitable genotypes especially in relation to digestive ability, and (d) effective prevention and control of parasites.

Influence of gentle touching applied few weeks before slaughter on avoidance distance and slaughter stress in finishing cattle Organic Eprints
Probst, Johanna K.; Hillmann, Edna; Leiber, Florian; Kreuzer, Michael; Spengler Neff, Anet.
The present study investigated the effect of gentle touching applied during the last 5 weeks before slaughter in finishing cattle on behaviour towards humans, stress indicators and beef quality. Three Experiments were carried out. Experiments 1, 2 and 3 employed eight Limousin crossbred bulls, eight Piemontese crossbreds (six females, two steers) and ten Limousin crossbreds (three females, seven steers), respectively. Half of the animals were equally assigned to a treatment and a control group. The treatment group consisted of a standardized gentle head-neck-region touching and started 5 weeks before slaughter and was continued once a week in experiments 1 and 2 and twice a week in experiment 3 during the following 5 weeks. Avoidance distance tests (ADT)...

Is Orbeseal® the answer to mastitis in organic farms? Organic Eprints
Notz, Christophe.
In addition to fertility problems mastitis also is a main animal health problem in organic dairy farms. A lot of therapeutics, mostly conventional, are used for this indication. The losses due to lower milk production, cure costs and replacement costs are enormous. Furthermore the regulations for organic farming rather favour complementary therapies than the use of antibiotics or other chemical-synthetic drugs. Consequently the non-antibiotic teat-sealer labelled as Orbeseal® could be a solution to improve the udder health in organic farming.

Safety and Efficacy of Mistletoe extract (Viscum album) Iscador(R) P in Equine Sarcoid Organic Eprints
Clottu, Ophélie; Klocke, Peter; Spranger, Joerg; Burger, Dominik; Werner, Michael; Ramos, Mac; Straub, Reto; von Tscharner, Claudia; Gerber, Vinzenz.
Equine Sarcoid (ES), a semi malignant skin tumour, is the most common neoplasia of horses (Marti et al.1993). There is no generally effective single treatment existing and the recurrence rate is high (Martens et al.2001). Furthermore as a treatment obstacle, Sarcoids tend to occur as multi-focal tumours or can be found in critical locations (peri-ocular) where success of surgical interventions is very limited (Carstanjen et al.1997). Due to encouraging results in human medicine and small animals practice after adjuvant cancer treatment by mistletoe extracts (Biegel et al.2007) the viscum therapy could hypothetically fill a therapy gap for equine tumour diseases as well. Hence, goal of this clinical trial was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of Viscum...
