Physiological responses of growing pigs to high ambient temperature and/or inflammatory challenges R. Bras. Zootec.
Campos,Paulo Henrique Reis Furtado; Le Floc'h,Nathalie; Noblet,Jean; Renaudeau,David.
ABSTRACT Global warming is one of the major environmental threats facing the world in the 21st century. This fact will have a significant impact on pig production due to its direct effects on welfare, health, and performance of pigs. Besides, the effects of high temperatures will presumably become more important over the next decades due to the development of pig production in developing countries mainly located in tropical and subtropical areas, where animals are often exposed to ambient temperatures above their thermal comfort zone. Furthermore, pigs reared in tropical areas are often confronted to sanitary challenges including poor hygiene conditions, lack of respect for sanitary rules, and pathogens. This results in the stimulation of the immune system...

Empirical models to predict feed intake of growing-finishing pigs reared under high environmental temperatures Scientia Agricola
Perondi,Dani; Kipper,Marcos; Andretta,Ines; Hauschild,Luciano; Lunedo,Raquel; Franceschina,Carolina Schell; Remus,Aline.
ABSTRACT Several empirical models were proposed to predict feed intake (FI) of growingfinishing pigs reared under high environmental temperatures. However, these models have not been evaluated under conditions different from those in which they were developed. Twelve empirical models were evaluated using a database built after systematic literature review (observed data: 28 studies in which the FI was evaluated in pigs under high environmental temperatures). Model accuracy was assessed using the mean squared of prediction error (MSPE). Analyses were performed considering two scenarios: (1) general population, where all observed data were used in the simulation; (2) reference population, where data were filtered in order to simulate only scenarios with...

Santos,Carolina de Castro; Delgado,Eduardo Francisquine; Menten,José Fernando Machado; Pedreira,Aparecida Carla de Moura; Castillo,Carmen Josefina Contreras; Mourão,Gérson Barreto; Brossi,Camila; Silva,Iran José Oliveira da.
Acute heat stress (AHS) modifies the structure of myofibrils affecting functional properties of meat, mainly the water holding capacity. This experiment aimed to identify changes in proteolysis and migration between the myofibrillar and sarcoplasmatic fractions due to pre-slaughter AHS. Myofibrillar fragmentation index (MFI), SDS-PAGE, western blot of vinculin (WB) and shear force (SF) were determined. Six hundred broilers (Gallus gallus) were slaughtered in three different days (ST). In each ST, groups of ten animals were placed in transport crates and submitted to AHS (35ºC, 75 - 85% RH) for 2 hours. Simultaneously, the non-stressed broilers (NS) were kept in thermoneutral environment (22ºC, 83 ± 6.6% RH) within the crates in the same density. After...
