| This is the 30th annual surveillance report concerning the central nuclear power plant of Gravelines. This very high power level results from six plant units located on the shore and is characterised by a cooling system with a coastal surface input and output. The production of electricity began in 1980 and reached maximum in 1986. Surveillance studies concern monitoring of fish populations (larvae and eggs of Sole and Sprat) or crustaceans (shrimps), benthic system (intertidal and subtidal) and pelagic system (hydrology, microbiology, phytoplancton, zooplancton). | The data of hydrology, nutrients and chlorophyll obtained in the Bay of Seine over the period 1978-1994, from 14 océanographie cruises, are synthetised and illustrated by an atlas. The Bay is a typical example of a coastal area influenced by a large river. In winter, the nutrient input is drained off into the eastern Channel. In spring, nutrients are consumed intensively. Silicate is the first that drops to limiting levels. The spring bloom generally begins in the centre-east of the Bay. Chlorophyll a can reach up to 40-70 µg/l during the year, values typical of eutrophic coastal areas. Despite the regular increase of nitrogen inputs, the biomass (as chlorophyll) has not significantly changed over a fifteen year period. |

| In October and early November 1999, the GOGP99 experiment collected hydrological, currentmeter, tide recorder, thermistor and drifting buoy data near the Strait of Hormuz. Data analysis provides the water mass structure in the Strait: Persian Gulf Water (PGW) core is banked against the Omani coast, while Indian Ocean Surface Water (IOSW) lies near the Iranian coast. These water masses are most often covered by a homogeneous surface layer. Thermohaline characteristics of the PGW core decrease substantially downstream, from the Persian/Arabian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman. | The Bay of Biscay is characterised by large fresh water inputs from two major rivers, the Loire and the Gironde, with a mean discharge of about 900 m(3)/s. To describe the spatial and temporal variability of the Loire and Gironde plumes, continuous salinity measurements were made at 4 locations on French coastal islands over periods lasting at least two years. These islands are located at a distance from the large local gradients linked to local inputs. Whereas sea surface salinity in the centre of the Bay of Biscay is 35.6, salinities at the coast vary between about 35 in summer to occasionally less than 30 in late winter or in spring. | An hydrobiological monitoring survey has been carried out in the Bay of Marennes-Oléron since 1977. Five stations, distributed over the Bay, were sam pied twice a month. Spatial and temporal trends of the physical characteristics (i.e., seawater, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and suspended matter), nutrients (azote, nitrite, nitrate, silicate) and organic variables (chlorophyll a and pheopigments) were assessed by using a statistical time-series analysis mode\.
