Analysis of Characteristics of Spatio-temporal Evolution of Land Use in Inhabited Islands of Pearl River Estuary AgEcon
Li, Tao; Gao, Yi; Li, Xiao-min; Li, Tuan-jie; Li, Xiao-ming; Yang, Qin.
Abstract Under the support of the remote sensing and geographical information system (GIS) techniques, we acquire the land use data in 1990 and 2008 regarding 6 inhabited islands, namely Longxue Island, Hengmen Island, Weiyuan Island, Oi'ao Island, Hengqin Island and Gaolan Island in Pearl River Estuary . By using dynamic degree of land use, land use change intensity, relative change rate and other indicators, we conduct quantitative description, and thus quantitatively and qualitatively analyze characteristics of temporal evolution and law of spatial pattern change concerning land use of each island. The study indicates that in the period 1990 2008, the area of construction land and water in 6 islands increased, while the area of agricultural land and...

Global Land Use Changes and Consequent CO2 Emissions due to US Cellulosic Biofuel Program: A Preliminary Analysis AgEcon
Taheripour, Farzad; Tyner, Wallace E..
The economic and land use consequences of US biofuel programs and their contributions to GHG emissions have been the focal point of many debates and research studies in recent years. However, most of these studies focused on the land use emissions due to the first generation of biofuels such as corn ethanol, sugarcane ethanol, and biodiesel (e.g. [1, 2] [3, 4]). A quick literature review indicates that only a few attempts have been made to estimate these emissions for the second generation of biofuels which convert cellulosic materials into liquid fuels. Gurgel et al. [5] have used a highly aggregated computational model (CGE) to evaluate land use consequences of producing biofuels from biomass feedstock. This model does not distinguish between the first...

Integrated assessment of the environmental, economic and social impacts of land use change using a GIS format – the CLUES model AgEcon
Harris, Simon; Elliott, Sandy; McBride, Graham; Shankar, Ude; Quinn, John; Wheeler, David; Wedderburn, Liz; Hewitt, Allan; Gibb, Robert; Parfitt, Roger; Clothier, Brent; Green, Steve; Munguia, Oscar Montes de Oca; Dake, Chris K.G.; Rys, Gerald.
The CLUES model is an integrated catchment based model that designed to assist policy makers in understanding the implications of land use scenarios for water quality and a range of other indicators. CLUES integrates a number of existing models from several research providers, including SPARROW (catchment hydrology), OVERSEER and SPASMO (nutrient losses), ENSUS (nitrate leaching risk), and a socioeconomic model. These are combined in a GIS framework which allows scenarios of land use to be assessed in a spatial manner. Regional council staff have been trained in its use, and the model is under ongoing development in response to feedback from users. This paper discusses the overall framework of the CLUES model, and discusses in greater depth the...

Exploring natural resource management tradeoffs in an agricultural landscape - an application of the MOSAIC model. AgEcon
Lawson, Kenton; Hill, Christine M.; Hodges, Andrew; Jacobs, Brent.
We describe a landscape scale non-linear discrete choice spatial optimisation model for identifying cost-effective strategies for achieving environmental goals. Spatial heterogeneity and configuration issues such as fencing costs, patch sizes and network linkages are explicitly accounted for and quasi-optimal allocations are determined using simulated annealing. Applications of the model being developed with New South Wales Catchment Management Authorities are discussed. These focus on targeting investments in revegetation to control dryland salinity and erosion and provide biodiversity benefits whilst minimising direct and opportunity costs. We compare our approach with alternate investment approaches.

Soil Organic Matter Quality in Jatropha spp. Plantations in Different Edaphoclimatic Conditions Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Freitas,Rita de Cássia Alves de; Popin,Gustavo Vicentini; Milori,Débora Marcondes Bastos Pereira; Signor,Diana; Drumond,Marcos Antônio; Cerri,Carlos Eduardo Pellegrino.
ABSTRACT The substitution of native vegetation by agricultural ecosystems can change the quantity and quality of soil organic matter (SOM), and the intensity of these changes depends on the soil type, climate, and land use. The objective of this study was to evaluate the quality of organic matter in chronosequences of Jatropha cultivation in contrasting soil and climatic conditions. Soil samples were evaluated at depths of 0.00-0.10, 0.20-0.30, and 0.80-1.00 m in chronosequences located in Planaltina, Distrito Federal (Cerrado-Pasture-Jatropha), Dourados, Mato Grosso do Sul (Atlantic Forest-Corn-Jatropha), and Araripina, Pernambuco (Caatinga-Jatropha). To assess SOM quality, we determined C contents in the SOM fractions, C stocks, the carbon management...

Modeling changes in organic carbon stocks for distinct soils in southeastern brazil after four eucalyptus rotations using the century model Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Lima,Augusto Miguel Nascimento; Silva,Ivo Ribeiro da; Stape,Jose Luis; Mendonça,Eduardo Sá; Novais,Roberto Ferreira; Barros,Nairam Félix de; Neves,Júlio César Lima; Paul,Keryn; Schulthais,Fernanda; Polglase,Phill; Raison,John; Soares,Emanuelle Mercês Barros.
Soil organic matter (SOM) plays an important role in carbon (C) cycle and soil quality. Considering the complexity of factors that control SOM cycling and the long time it usually takes to observe changes in SOM stocks, modeling constitutes a very important tool to understand SOM cycling in forest soils. The following hypotheses were tested: (i) soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks would be higher after several rotations of eucalyptus than in low-productivity pastures; (ii) SOC values simulated by the Century model would describe the data better than the mean of observations. So, the aims of the current study were: (i) to evaluate the SOM dynamics using the Century model to simulate the changes of C stocks for two eucalyptus chronosequences in the Rio Doce...

Simulation of soil organic carbon changes in Vertisols under conservation tillage using the RothC model Scientia Agricola
Molina,Lucila González; Moreno Pérez,Esaú del C.; Pérez,Aurelio Baéz.
ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to determine the measured and simulated rates of soil organic carbon (SOC) change in Vertisols in short-term experiments when the tillage system is changed from traditional tillage (TT) to conservation tillage (CT). The study was conducted in plots in four locations in the state of Michoacán and two locations in the state of Guanajuato. In the SOC change simulation, the RothC-26.3 carbon model was evaluated with different C inputs to the soil (ET1-ET5). ET was the measured shoot biomass (SB) plus estimated rhizodeposition (RI). RI was tested at values of 10, 15, 18, 36 and 50 % total biomass (TB). The SOC changes were simulated with the best trial where ET3 = SB + (0.18*TB). Values for model efficiency and the...

Replacement of native vegetation alters the soil microbial structure in the Pampa biome Scientia Agricola
Suleiman,Afnan Khalil Ahmad; Pylro,Victor Satler; Roesch,Luiz Fernando Wurdig.
ABSTRACT: Land use change is one of the the major factors related to soil degradation and alterations in soil microbial diversity and structure. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the microbial shifts caused by deforestation of a small area of a natural forest for the introduction of a pasture in the Brazilian Pampa. The microbial abundance and structure were evaluated by molecular approaches based on quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR) and Ribosomal Intergenic Spacer Analysis (RISA). The microbial communities did not present significant quantitative differences, but the environmental impact caused by deforestation changed the structure of the bacterial and archaeal communities. Taking into account the percentage of shared OTUs (operational...

Changes in population and land use over time in the Ecuadorian Amazon Acta Amazonica
Bilsborrow,Richard E.; Barbieri,Alisson F.; Pan,William.
This paper draws upon a detailed longitudinal survey of households living on agricultural plots in the northern three provinces of the Ecuadorian Amazon, the principal region of colonization by migrants in Ecuador since the 1970s. Following the discovery of petroleum in 1967 near what has subsequently come to be the provincial capital and largest Amazonian city of Lago Agrio, oil companies built roads to lay pipelines to extract and pump oil across the Andes for export. As a result, for the past 30 years over half of both Ecuador's export earnings and government revenues have come from petroleum extracted from this region. But the roads also facilitated massive spontaneous in-migration of families from origin areas in the Ecuadorian Sierra, characterized...

Reconstructing historical forest cover change in the Lower Amazon floodplains using the LandTrendr algorithm Acta Amazonica
FRAGAL,Everton Hafemann; SILVA,Thiago Sanna Freire; NOVO,Evlyn Márcia Leão de Moraes.
ABSTRACTThe Amazon várzeas are an important component of the Amazon biome, but anthropic and climatic impacts have been leading to forest loss and interruption of essential ecosystem functions and services. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the capability of the Landsat-based Detection of Trends in Disturbance and Recovery (LandTrendr) algorithm to characterize changes in várzeaforest cover in the Lower Amazon, and to analyze the potential of spectral and temporal attributes to classify forest loss as either natural or anthropogenic. We used a time series of 37 Landsat TM and ETM+ images acquired between 1984 and 2009. We used the LandTrendr algorithm to detect forest cover change and the attributes of "start year", "magnitude", and "duration"...

Effects of land use conversion on soil aggregate stability and organic carbon in different soils Agrociencia
Ćirić,Vladimir; Manojlović,Maja; Belić,Milivoj; Nešić,Ljiljana; Šeremešić,Srdan.
Aggregate stability is an important factor of the soil functioning. Greater aggregate stability leads to greater soil organic carbon (SOC) preservation, while SOC acts as a key cementing agent in aggregation processes. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of native vegetation conversion in soil aggregate stability and SOC concentration. The investigation was conducted in the Vojvodina Province, Serbia, in July 2009. Undisturbed soil samples were taken from Haplic Chernozem, Haplic Fluvisol and Gleyic Vertisol, at a depth ranging from 0 to 20 cm. A completely randomized experimental design was used with three replicates. Each soil type was considered under treatments 1) cropland >100 years, 2) native meadow and 3) native...

Where is sugarcane cropping expanding in the brazilian cerrado, and why? A case study Anais da ABC (AABC)
ARRUDA,MURILO R. DE; GILLER,KEN E.; SLINGERLAND,MAJA.
ABSTRACT Sugarcane growing area in Brazil sharply expanded between 2000 and 2010 due to the increasing world demand for sugar and ethanol. Since this expansion of sugarcane is said to occur in areas covered by degraded pastures, it is likely not threatening the environment or food production. In order to verify this assumption, we investigate at farm and field levels which types of land use sugarcane cropping replaced between 2005 and 2010 and the reasons for farmers shifting or not shifting to sugarcane, as a case study in two counties in the state of Goiás. Within the studied period, sugarcane cropping expansion was related to large farms, lower risk perceived by farmers, and higher profitability compared with soybean and beef cattle-raising. For...

Comparing how land use change impacts soil microbial catabolic respiration in Southwestern Amazon BJM
Mazzetto,Andre Mancebo; Feigl,Brigitte Josefine; Cerri,Carlos Eduardo Pellegrino; Cerri,Carlos Clemente.
Abstract Land use changes strongly impact soil functions, particularly microbial biomass diversity and activity. We hypothesized that the catabolic respiration response of the microbial biomass would differ depending on land use and that these differences would be consistent at the landscape scale. In the present study, we analyzed the catabolic response profile of the soil microbial biomass through substrate-induced respiration in different land uses over a wide geographical range in Mato Grosso and Rondônia state (Southwest Amazon region). We analyzed the differences among native areas, pastures and crop areas and within each land use and examined only native areas (Forest, Dense Cerrado and Cerrado), pastures (Nominal, Degraded and Improved) and crop...

Experimental evaluation of sediment yield in the first year after replacement of pastures by sugarcane Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Youlton,Cristian; Bragion,Ana Paula; Wendland,Edson.
C. Youlton, A. P. Bragion, and E. Wendland. 2016. Experimental evaluation of sediment yield in the first year after replacement of pastures by sugarcane. Cien. Inv. Agr. 43(3): 374383. Sugarcane cultivation has expanded in south-eastern Brazil in the last decade, mainly for biofuel (ethanol) production. This expansion has occurred on land that was originally covered with pasture and used for livestock production. The purpose of this study is to experimentally determine the impact on runoff and erosion produced by replacing pasture with sugarcane. Runoff plots of 100 m² were established at a farm in Itirapina, Sao Paulo (SP), Brazil, on a hill with a 9% slope and sandy soil. An 18-year-old pasture and a new sugarcane plantation were studied. The degrees of...

MICROMORPHOLOGY AND PEDOGENESIS OF MOUNTAINOUS INCEPTISOLS IN THE MANTIQUEIRA RANGE (MG) Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Pinto,Leandro Campos; Zinn,Yuri Lopes; Mello,Carlos Rogério de; Owens,Phillip Ray; Norton,Lloyd Darrell; Curi,Nilton.
ABSTRACTUnderstanding soil formation processes across different landscapes is needed to predict how soil properties will respond to land use change. This study aimed to characterize mountainous Inceptisols (Cambisols) under high altitude subtropical climate in southeastern Brazil, by soil physical, chemical and micromorphological analyses, under native forest and pasture. The soil under pasture had a greater bulk density than under forest, resulting in a severe reduction of macroporosity. At two depths, coarse quartz grains are angular, suggesting absence of transportational processes, thus confirming an autochthonous pedogenesis from the underlying gneissic rock. Most feldspars were weathered beyond recognition, but mineral alteration was commonly seen...
