Drivers of Resident Support for Animal Care Oriented Ballot Initiatives AgEcon
Tonsor, Glynn T.; Wolf, Christopher A..
Recent high profile incidents and public debates in the United States have highlighted the increasing interest residents have regarding animal rearing and handling practices. This paper examines resident support for national legislation that mirrors Proposition 2, which in November 2008 passed in California. Results suggest perceptions regarding animal welfare information accuracy of livestock industry and consumer groups are particularly influential determinants of voting behavior and demand. The analysis also suggests residents may not fully appreciate price or tax implications when supporting additional animal welfare legislation. Implications for livestock industry and policy makers are provided along with suggestions for additional research.

van Koppen, Barbara; Moriarty, Patrick; Boelee, Eline.
This research report presents the findings of the first phase of the action-research project "Models for implementing multiple-use water supply systems for enhanced land and water productivity, rural livelihoods and gender equity." Multipleuse water services, or "mus" in short, is a participatory, integrated and poverty-reduction focused approach in poor rural and peri-urban areas, which takes people's multiple water needs as a starting point for providing integrated services, moving beyond the conventional sectoral barriers of the domestic and productive sectors.

Coastal Zone Management in the Mediterranean: Legal and Economic Perspectives AgEcon
Markandya, Anil; Arnold, S.; Cassinelli, Mariaester; Taylor, Tim J..
This paper examines existing measures taken to protect the coastal zones of the Mediterranean Sea and assesses their success. A summary of the main pressures facing these zones is given, followed by an analysis of the legislation covering coastal zone development in ten countries: Algeria, Croatia, Egypt, France, Israel, Italy, Malta, Spain, Tunisia and Turkey. We find that not all of these states have legislation specifically covering coastal zones, but there is concern in all areas that the legislation is not working, We also look at the costs and benefits of controlling coastal development. Firstly, a literature review of valuation studies identifies a range of values placed on developed and undeveloped coastline for both users and local property...

Protecting the Privilege of Burning Sugarcane at Harvest AgEcon
Hurly, K.M.; Lynsky, R.J.; Stranack, R.A..
The South African sugar industry burns 90% of the crop at harvest while 10% is harvested green. The trend to burn cane at harvest has increased over the past twenty years, despite growing pressure from the public and environmental legislation. This paper explores the influence that public pressure and legislation are having on the practise of burning and examines the actions that the industry has implemented in order to protect the privilege of burning sugarcane at harvest. A communication model and case studies are used to illustrate the interaction between the sugar industry, government and public role players over cane burning. Communication has proved to be a key management tool that has had to be dynamic and on going in order to engage the various...

The restoration and protection of the swampy meadow within an agricultural landscape AgEcon
Mactaggart, Barbara; Bauer, Johannes; Goldney, David; Rawson, Andrew.
This paper addresses some implications our limited understanding of the swampy meadow landform has on agricultural production and sustainable water management. The ecological and hydrological consequences of current water management practices have lead to a revaluation of natural approaches as an alternative to instream engineering solutions. One such approach would be the restoration/rehabilitation of the swampy meadow. These landforms act as buffering agents for floods and droughts, allow for the re-hydration of the floodplains, and have further positive effects on enhancing biodiversity and improving agricultural productivity outcomes. In this paper we examine the many confusing terms used to label the swampy meadow and postulate that this confusion,...

Comparison of National and International Standards of Good Egg Production Practices Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Sousa,GP; Pereira,DF; Watanabe,K; Cataneo,PF.
ABSTRACT Egg production is an important economic activity in Brazil, with about 697 million eggs produced annually. The conventional cage system is commonly used for egg production. However, there has been a growing concern for the welfare of laying hens around the world. In this context, many countries have issued laws, protocols, and other normative technical specifications to ensure the welfare of layers. This study aims at identifying similarities and differences between international standards and Brazilian protocols using the Comparative Law perspective. This article reports an analytical study of selected protocols, performing three analyses using the Comparative Law method. The research concludes that some items of the Brazilian protocols of good...

Will the Convention on Biological Diversity put an end to biological control? Rev. Bras. entomol.
van Lenteren,Joop C.; Cock,Matthew J. W.; Brodeur,Jacques; Barratt,Barbara I. P.; Bigler,Franz; Bolckmans,Karel; Haas,Fabian; Mason,Peter G.; Parra,José Roberto P..
Will the Convention on Biological Diversity put an end to biological control? Under the Convention on Biological Diversity countries have sovereign rights over their genetic resources. Agreements governing the access to these resources and the sharing of the benefits arising from their use need to be established between involved parties. This also applies to species collected for potential use in biological control. Recent applications of access and benefit sharing principles have already made it difficult or impossible to collect and export natural enemies for biological control research in several countries. If such an approach is widely applied it would impede this very successful and environmentally safe pest management method based on the use of...

Knowledge and attitudes of official inspectors at slaughterhouses in southern Brazil regarding animal welfare R. Bras. Zootec.
Hötzel,Maria José; Mota,Suzana Machado; Ludtke,Charli Beatriz; Poletto,Rosangela.
ABSTRACT We assessed the views, knowledge, and attitudes of livestock inspectors working in federally inspected slaughterhouses in southern Brazil, the major pig and poultry processors in the country, regarding farm animal behavior and welfare, and factors that may influence animal welfare improvements at abattoirs. An online questionnaire with closed and open questions was sent to all the federally inspected slaughterhouses in the three states of the region. All respondents (n = 83) strongly agreed that animals are capable of feeling pain, but fewer agreed that animals have mental states and individual temperament, or that animals can feel boredom or frustration. In the assessment of respondents, professionals in Brazil receive insufficient training in...

Native and non-indigenous boring polychaetes in Chile: a threat to native and commercial mollusc species RChHN
MORENO,RODRIGO A; NEILL,PAULA E; ROZBACZYLO,NICOLÁS.
Boring polychaetes infesting the shells of aquacultured molluscs affect host fitness and cause serious economic problems for the aquaculture industry. In Chile, knowledge of the native and non-indigenous polychaete fauna associated with mollusc hosts is limited, in spite of the fact that numerous native and non-indigenous mollusc species are actively harvested. We present the first complete list of boring polychaete species present in Chile, with a review of the information regarding each species' status as a native or non-indigenous species (NIS), together with information on native and introduced ranges, affected host species, likely vectors of introduction and donor areas. We recorded a total of nine boring polychaetes present along the Chilean coast...

Export of live animals and animal well-being in Brazil: exploring the current scenario MV&Z
Bailone, Ricardo Lacava.
Normative Instruction No. 46 from August 28, 2018, which regulates the exportation of cattle, buffalos, sheep and goats for immediate slaughter, fattening or reproduction, establishes the norms and procedures for the preparation of live animals for exportation by sea, river, air or land. In this article, we discuss the main topics related to animal well-being within this context. Considering the increase of this activity in recent years in Brazil, the new legislation represents an improvement in the area of transportation of live animals, given that until then there was no legislation. However, this is a complex activity that involves one of the most stressful stages for animals, the pre-slaughter management. Even with this improvement, we must take into...

Chilled raw milk quality: a case study in Zona da Mata region, Minas Gerais State, Brazil Ciência Rural
Lima,Luiz Paulo de; Braga,Gustavo Bastos; Perez,Ronaldo; Carvalho,Antonio Fernandes de.
ABSTRACT: This paper aimed to analyze the evolution of the quality of raw milk produced by producers in the Zona da Mata region, in the state of Minas Gerais, between 2012 and 2018. For this purpose, we used the linear mixed-effects model to analyze the monthly evolution of the results of milk composition indicators (fat, protein, and defatted dry extract - DDE), somatic cell count - SCC, and total bacterial count - TBC, from the official monthly registry of 94 milk producers, suppliers of a region’s dairy. Results indicate a continuous reduction in the milk composition indicators between 2014 and 2018. For the SCC and TBC indicators, we identified only one-off reductions. The supply of a larger volume of milk was associated with increased TBC. Seasonality...
