Ultraphytoplankton is composed by a group of organisms phylogenetically diverse, which contribute significantly to the total biomass and primary production in different oceanic and coastal pelagic systems. The success of ultraphytoplankton is attributed to its high efficiency in capturing light and nutrients, due to their small cell size and low sinking rate. The community structure is driven by the interaction among biotic and abiotic variables, such as temperature, nutrients, light and predators. The objective of this work was to assess the ecological importance of ultraphytoplankton organisms at the EPEA station, situated in the Buenos Aires coastal pelagic system (Argentina, SW Atlantic), during the period 2000-2009. In particular, ultraphytoplankton... |

This document provides a regional overview on land-based sources and activities affecting the marine, coastal and associated freshwater environment in the West and Central African region. It addresses natural conditions and processes, anthropogenic impacts and its socio-economic implications, including losses of cultural heritage sites. This overview also contains information on emerging and forseeable problems in the region, proposing priorities for action including regional and international activities for cooperation. This document encompasses the following nations: Angola, Benin, Chad, Congo (Democratic Republic), Côte d’Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mauritania, Nigeria, São Tomé and Principe, Senegal and Togo. |

The aim of this paper was to accurately estimate population parameters of northern (“bonaerensis”, latitude < 41° S) and southern (“patagonic”, latitude 41° S) Argentine anchovy stocks and to describe some aspects of their behaviour. The research surveys allowed to obtain data on length, total weight, sex, maturity and age of 27,853 specimens of the northern and 12,787 of the southern stocks. Besides, 20,717 age determinations stemmed from commercial landing samplings of the northern stock were established. Sex proportion in the northern population was 0.50 : 0.50; the southern showed a slight predominance of males (0.52 : 0.48). Data derived from cruises and commercial landings showed statistical differences in the growth ratio of the northern stock... |

The proposed Coega Port will be situated near the southern extreme of the Industrial Development Zone (IDZ) at the mouth of the Coega River to the east of Port Elizabeth. This specialist report deals with the issues and impacts associated with land disposal of excavated material, marine dredging and disposal, and outlines the monitoring guidelines for the dredging and disposal operation. Chapter 1 describes the port layout, limits and its proposed functions, which include acting as an inter-modal transshipment point for bulk cargo and containers for industries in the IDZ and the hinterland. A brief summary of the guidelines for the management of dredged material is then presented. This section is largely based on the PIANC guidelines, but incorporates... |

Stripped weakfish is one of the ensemble of species known as “variado costero” most frequently landed. Considering that fact, determination of abundance indices is particularly relevant to apply assessment models and make recommendations to allow for a proper fishery management. The aim of this study was to obtain those indices of the species derived from research cruises carried out in the Argentine-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone AUCFZ area (34°S-39°S) in the 1993-2006 period. In order to improve the traditional estimate accuracy modeling was used. To formulate the general linear models year, stratum, length, bottom salinity, depth factors and population data such as mean size and juveniles percentage were used. The percentages of variance explained in the... |

Results of the investigation carried out in Lakes Mariut and Edku revealed that the trace metals concentrations in ceratophyllum demersum is relatively higher than that in Potamogeton pectinatus. The protein and trace metals in macrophytes collected from unpolluted areas is lower thjan that form polluted ones. Eichhornia crassipes can have a restricted role for the treatment of lake water. In Lake Edku, the results of chemical composition of sediments agree with the previous studies. The trace metal content of C. demersum was higher than that of P. pectinatus. The higher organic carbon level was recorded in stems of submerged plants and in leaves of floating ones. On the other hand, the high concentration of trace metal was observed in leaves of submerged... |
