Despite the fragmented nature of hydrothermal vent (HV) fields, nascent vent sites are rapidly colonized by a pool of regional species. While succession of large animals at vents is relatively well established, we lack information on the associated meiofauna, in particular, on nematodes. The aim of the present study is to investigate the process of colonisation after 9 months of organic (wood and bone) and inorganic (slate) substrata by nematode assemblages deployed at the Eiffel Tower hydrothermal edifice on the Lucky Strike vent field on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR), at varying distances from visible hydrothermal activity. Abundance, biomass and diversity of colonising nematodes were compared with the results from an earlier similar two-year experiment.... |

In the past few decades, hydrothermal vent research has progressed immensely, resulting in higher-quality samples and long-term studies. With time, scientists are becoming more aware of the impacts of sampling on the faunal communities and are looking for less invasive ways to investigate the vent ecosystems. In this perspective, imagery analysis plays a very important role. With this study, we test which factors can be quantitatively and accurately assessed based on imagery, through comparison with faunal sampling. Twelve instrumented chains were deployed on the Atlantic Eiffel Tower hydrothermal edifice and the corresponding study sites were subsequently sampled. Discrete, quantitative samples were compared to the imagery recorded during the experiment.... |

We have reviewed available visual information from the seafloor, and recently acquired microbathymetry for several traverses across the Lucky Strike segment, to evaluate the distribution of hydrothermal activity. We have identified a new on-axis site with diffuse flow, Ewan, and an active vent structure ∼1.2 km from the axis, Capelinhos. These sites are minor relative to the Main field, and our total heatflux estimate for all active sites (200–1200 MW) is only slightly higher than previously published estimates. We also identify fossil sites W of the main Lucky Strike field. A circular feature ∼200 m in diameter located on the flanks of a rifted off-axis central volcano is likely a large and inactive hydrothermal edifice, named Grunnus. We find no... |

Knowledge on quantitative faunal distribution patterns of hydrothermal communities in slow-spreading vent fields is particularly scarce, despite the importance of these ridges in the global mid-ocean system. This study assessed the composition, abundance and diversity of 12 benthic faunal assemblages from various locations on the Eiffel Tower edifice (Lucky Strike vent field, Mid-Atlantic Ridge) and investigated the role of key environmental conditions (temperature, total dissolved iron (TdFe), sulfide (TdS), copper (TdCu) and pH) on the distribution of macro- and meiofaunal species at small spatial scales (< 1 m). There were differences in macro- and meiofaunal community structure between the different sampling locations, separating the hydrothermal... |

The Earth's upper mantle is commonly depicted as a “marble cake” assemblage of a refractory component mingled with varying amounts of geochemically diverse enriched components. This depleted component controls the major element composition of Mid-Oceanic Ridge Basalts (MORBs). It has long been considered a fairly uniform reservoir, depleted by early melting and well homogenized by subsequent convective stirring. We present new Hf, Nd, Pb and Sr isotopes and trace element data for basalts from the center of the Lucky Strike segment of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR). Despite the limited size of our sampling area (1.6 km along-axis by 5 km across), these data show a large range of isotopic compositions (similar to that of the whole MAR). It has recently been... |
