Relationships between growth, survival, physiology and behaviour — A multi-criteria approach to Haliotis tuberculata phenotypic traits ArchiMer
Lachambre, Sebastien; Huchette, Sylvain; Day, Rob; Boudry, Pierre; Rio-cabello, Antoine; Fustec, Timothee; Roussel, Sabine.
Abalone growth rate is often identified among important traits to improve through selective breeding. However, the rapid success of some selective breeding plans has sometimes led to negative effects in some aquaculture species due to trade-offs. One of them is the loss of homeostasis of selected animals which results in the inability to resist the stress experienced during the rearing process. In this context, this study aimed to analyze the phenotypic relationships between growth, and physiological and behavioural traits in Haliotis tuberculata under stressful conditions. Eleven traits related to growth, immunity, reproduction and behaviour were recorded under laboratory conditions. A total of 120 adults from wild or farm origin were first monitored...

Biological and ecological factors related to trace element levels in harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) from European waters ArchiMer
Lahaye, V; Bustamante, Paco; Law, J.r; Learmonth, J.a; Santos, M.b.; Boon, J.p.; Rogan, E; Dabin, W; Addink, M.j.; Lopez, A; Zuur, A.f.; Pierce, G.j.; Caurant, Florence.
Selected trace elements (Cd, Cu, Hg, Se, Zn) were measured in the kidneys and the liver of 104 harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) stranded along the coasts of France, Galicia (Spain), Ireland, Scotland (UK), and the Netherlands. Generally, relatively low concentrations of toxic elements were encountered in the tissues of European porpoises, except for two individuals, which displayed high hepatic Hg concentrations. Also, elevated Cd levels obtained in Scottish porpoises could be related to their feeding preferences and this result suggests an increase of the proportion of cephalopods in their diet with latitude. Moreover, significant geographical differences were seen in hepatic Zn concentrations; the elevated Zn concentrations displayed by porpoises...

Maguer, Cedric; Reynal, Lionel; Taquet, Marc.
This work aims to describe fishing activity in Guadeloupe through a typology. The samply unit y is the landing represented by a profile of specific composition. Using multivariate analysis methods allows to synthesize this fishing multi specises and multi fishing tackles. Principal Component Analysis and classification regroup landings. Then, segmentation method separateses classes by species composition. Typology is obtained by association of classes and tackles. The contraist between landings of reef fishes realized with traps and those which search for pelagics is clearly shown. Landings of queen conch and landings without fishes are separated in two classes.

Induced spawning of red drum, Sciaenops ocellatus: use of multivariate and univariate analysis methods in the search for side effects of LH-RHa treatments and ovarian development state upon spawn quality ArchiMer
Gardes, Lionel; Villanove, Philippe; Buchet, Vincent; Fauvel, Christian.
The present work examines the usefulness of the combination of multivariate analyses and further one-way analysis of variance in the search for links between causes and effects in heterologous stimulation of spawning in fish. Stimulations with both 20 and 50 mu g . kg(-1) doses of [D Trp(6)] luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone analogue (LH-RHa) were effective in inducing and synchronizing spawning of red drum, Sciaenops ocellatus. Oocyte development monitoring using ovarian biopsy allowed treatment injections at different stages of maturation. The influence at stimulation time of female oocyte development state upon further development was shown. An interesting potential of second stimulation, leading to high quality spawns, was established and factors...

Leaute, Jean-pierre.
This document presents a comparative assessment of six triennal analysis carried out between 1986 and 2002, on 1300 boats, on average, from the 35 ports of Southern Bay of Biscay fishing fleets (from Loire river to Spanish border). Fisheries statistics allow the identification of different fishing practices and fishing boats associated with them within the fleets. In order to allow comparison and analysis of the evolution that has taken place during the study period, the same variables (gears used, landed species) and multivariate analysis procedures have been used to produce groupings of vessels. Over the period, 11 components, on average, have been identified, grouped in two entities, mobile and fixed gears. If the discriminative characteristics...

BIGORNO.
This report presents the results obtained during the BIGORNO project whose main objective is to overcome knowledge gaps on the biocenoses of the southern sub-region "Bay of Biscay" to propose a sampling protocol adapted to biogeographic and environmental specific conditions. A stratified random sampling design considering spatial heterogeneity has been implemented. Biodiversity was considered on 0.1 m²quadrats. These data have revealed the organization of benthic communities and the relevant taxa to be considered (species or assemblages of indicator species) in the context of establishing perennial monitoring of intertidal habitats. Proposals are made to implement the descriptors and indicators defined in the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD).

Assessing Alternative Microscopy-Based Approaches to Species Abundance Description of Intertidal Diatom Communities ArchiMer
Ribeiro, Lourenço; Brotas, Vanda; Hernandez Farinas, Tania; Jesus, Bruno; Barille, Laurent.
Diatoms usually dominate microphytobenthic biofilms in coastal and estuarine intertidal environments. Yet, functional studies on biofilms often skip species analysis because benthic diatoms are notoriously difficult to extract from sediments and challenging to identify at that taxonomic level. Valid, less time-consuming alternatives would surely be welcomed and increase the inclusion of community structure information in microphytobenthos (MPB) ecophysiological studies. Starting with an original 181-species abundances matrix (OSM), obtained during a 2-year spatial–temporal survey in a Tagus Estuary intertidal flat with contrasting sediment textures, the current study assessed the effectiveness of several approaches to species abundances analysis. The...

Taquet, Marc; Gaertner, Jean-claude; Bertrand, Jacques.
This work aims to define a typology of trawler f1eet in Sète, the main fishing harbour along the French Mediterranean coast, using several multivariate analysis methods. The fishing ships taken to account are represented by annual profiles of landing specific compositions. Five fishing strategies have been identified. A segmentation method using symbolic objects allows a formaI characterisation of the different strategies. These strategies are studied according to several general characteristics usually used for management rules elaboration (power, length, ship age). The typological analysis allows to characterise two main exploitation ways, one directed to the catch of a few species (Engraulis encrasicolus, Sardina pilchardus), the other characterised by...

A three-dimensional view on biodiversity changes: spatial, temporal, and functional perspectives on fish communities in the Baltic Sea ArchiMer
Frelat, Romain; Orio, Alessandro; Casini, Michele; Lehmann, Andreas; Merigot, Bastien; Otto, Saskia A.; Sguotti, Camilla; Moellmann, Christian.
Fisheries and marine ecosystem-based management requires a holistic understanding of the dynamics of fish communities and their responses to changes in environmental conditions. Environmental conditions can simultaneously shape the spatial distribution and the temporal dynamics of a population, which together can trigger changes in the functional structure of communities. Here, we developed a comprehensive framework based on complementary multivariate statistical methodologies to simultaneously investigate the effects of environmental conditions on the spatial, temporal and functional dynamics of species assemblages. The framework is tested using survey data collected during more than 4000 fisheries hauls over the Baltic Sea between 2001 and 2016. The...

Morphometric Differentiation of Two Nigerian Fish Species (Oreochromis niloticus and Lates niloticus) Using Principal Components and Discriminant Analysis International Journal of Morphology
Yakubu,A; Okunsebor,S. A.
Morphological differences between two close fish populations were investigated in Doma Dam, north central Nigeria using principal component and discriminant analyses. The purpose was to identify the two species correctly and assign them into distinct genetic groups. To achieve this, seven morphometric measurements (body weight, standard length, total length, head length, body depth, dorsal fin length and caudal fin length) were made on each of the studied 252 fish specimens (153 Oreochromis niloticus and 99 Lates niloticus). The analysis of variance showed that significantly (P<0.05) higher values were recorded for Lates niloticus in all the body traits examined, except dorsal fin length. From the principal component analysis, the differences between...

A multivariate approach to explore the genetic variability in the F2 segregating population of a tomato second cycle hybrid JBAG
Cabodevila,V.G; Picardi,L.A; Pratta,G.R.
Segregating progeny from the tomato Second Cycle Hybrids (SCH) that were obtained from crossing RIL (Recombinant Inbred Lines) allows the detection of new genetic combinations that could increase genetic variability in F2 populations. The objectives of the present study were to evaluate eleven tomato quality traits in a segregating F2 population obtained from a SCH and, then, to characterize the molecular diversity by six AFLP (Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism) primer combinations. Different multivariate analyses were used to assess the degree of concordance among these two approaches to detect genetic variability. Sixty-nine F2 plants were obtained by selfing the SCH (ToUNR18xToUNR1). The parental RIL were derived from an interspecific cross between...

A taxonomic revision of Actinidiaceae of Vietnam Naturalis
Cuong, N.M.; Soejarto, D.D.; Li, J..
Taxonomic study of morphological variability using multivariate analysis, together with field studies and literature review clarified the status of a number of paired species of Saurauia and Actinidia of Vietnam and resolved their correct nomenclature: Saurauia tristyla is different from S. roxburghii; Saurauia petelotii is not a synonym of S. fasciculata but is a separate species; Actinidia tonkinensis is a synonym of A. latifolia; Actinidia indochinensis is a distinct species, not a variety of A. callosa; Saurauia dillenioides is a synonym of S. armata; and Saurauia griffithii var. annamica is a synonym of S. napaulensis. Four taxa of Actinidia are newly recorded for Vietnam. The results of this study will allow us to better understand the conservation...

Sponge diversity and community composition in Irish bathyal coral reefs Naturalis
Soest, R.W.M van; Cleary, D.F.R.; Kluijver, M.J. de; Lavaleye, M.S.S.; Maier, C.; Duy, F.C. van.
Sponge diversity and community composition in bathyal cold water coral reefs (CWRs) were examined at 500-900 m depth on the southeastern slopes of Rockall Bank and the northwestern slope of Porcupine Bank, to the west of Ireland in 2004 and 2005 with boxcores. A total of 104 boxcore samples, supplemented with 10 trawl/dredge attempts, were analyzed for the presence and abundance of sponges, using microscopical examination of (sub)samples of collected coral branches, and semi-quantitative macroscopic examination. Approximate minimum size of identified and counted sponge individuals was 1 mm. Literature data were added to the Porcupine Bank results to compensate for a less intensive sampling program in that location. Species richness and abundance were...

Castes in the neotropical social wasp Leipomeles dorsata (Fabricius) (Hymenoptera: Vespidae): a window for workers achieving a new status in the colony Neotropical Entomology
Noll,Fernando B; Gomes,Bruno; Lima,Alexandre C O; Mateus,Sidnei; Wenzel,John W.
Morphometric studies performed in several species of Neotropical social wasps from the tribe Epiponini showed that in some species there are marked differences between castes, while other species present highly distinct castes with differences only in ovarian development. This work analyzed females from six colonies of the social wasp Leipomeles dorsata (Fabricius) in which queens (egglayers) and workers showed differences in ovarian development and coloration. We propose that wasps with developed ovaries (egglayers) and coloration similar to those of workers are possibly intermediates that obtained the status of queens in the colony.

Integrity of fluvial fish communities is subject to environmental gradients in mountain streams, Sierra de Aroa, north Caribbean coast, Venezuela Neotropical Ichthyology
Rodríguez-Olarte,Douglas; Amaro,Ahyran; Coronel,Jorge; Taphorn B.,Donald C..
We examined physical habitat and fish assemblages in rivers of the Aroa Mountains (Venezuela) with different levels of environmental protection due to the creation of Yurubí National Park within the drainage. We developed an Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) and evaluated it using principal components analysis (PCA) and canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). Tributary rivers were divided into classes according to their origin (protected by the park) and physical characteristics of each, including substrate. Fishes were captured using standardized electrofishing. Fish communities showed greater species richness in heterogeneous habitat and protected rivers but overall abundance was higher in unprotected and impacted rivers. The IBI was sensitive to these...

Arencibia, G.; Capetillo, N.; Castro, M.; Ortega, A..

Glid, A.; Mosbah, S.; Ghorbel, M.; Bradai, M.N..

Mackerel from SW Atlantic (22° -39°S) and the coast of Cataluña (42° 30'N) were compared by analizing both morphometric and meristic characters. A multivariate analysis, i.e. principal components was used. The growth curves corresponding to mackerels from different regions (Canarias, North of Chile, Mar del Plata and Rincón in Argentine) were also compared, as well as the mean length at ages 1 and 2 (Mar del Plata- Cataluña, Rincón- Cataluña). Significant differences in the growth were found between two groups. The first group was integrated by three SW Atlantic population (Brasil, Mar del Plata, Rincón), which possible conform a subspecies of Scomber japonicus. The second one was represented by the coastal mackerel off Cataluña.

Schejter, L..
The different aspects of the benthic assemblages at the Patagonian scallop beds in the Argentine Sea (SW Atlantic) were studied. The Patagonian scallop (Zygochlamys patagonica) is a commercial species distributed in the Magellanic Biogeographic Province, and has been commercially exploited since 1996. Temporal and spatial studies were performed in the community composition between 39°50'S and 36°15'S, and between 1998 and 2003, concluding that the species association was persistent after more than 7 years of trawling activities. Species composition in an exclusion area (closed to scallop fishing) did not differ from surrounding fished areas during the studied period, showing only a higher scallop biomass. ABC curves showed a pattern coincident with a non...
