Urinary secretory IgA after nutritional rehabilitation BJMBR
Teodósio,M.R.; Oliveira,E.C.M..
We studied the secretory IgA (sIgA) response of the mucosal urinary tract of malnourished children before and after nutritional rehabilitation. sIgA concentration (mg/l) was determined by ELISA in 187 children aged 3 months to 5 years. The children, who frequented a day care center, were divided into four groups, according to nutritional status: 57 were eutrophic, 49 were undergrown, 57 were moderately malnourished and 24 were severely malnourished. In addition, dip slide (Urotube, Roche) and dip-stick (Combur 9-Boehringer) tests showed that children had no bacteriuria or any other urinary abnormalities. Plasma albumin concentration (g/dl) was significantly lower (P<0.005) in the severely malnourished group (mean 3.0 ± 0.3 SD) than in the eutrophic...

Dietary fiber, energy intake and nutritional status during the treatment of children with chronic constipation BJMBR
Speridião,P.G.L.; Tahan,S.; Fagundes-Neto,U.; Morais,M.B..
The present prospective study was carried out to determine dietary fiber and energy intake and nutritional status of children during the treatment of chronic constipation. Twenty-five patients aged 2 to 12 years with chronic constipation were submitted to clinical evaluation, assessment of dietary patterns, and anthropometry before and after 45 and 90 days of treatment. The treatment of chronic constipation included rectal disimpaction, ingestion of mineral oil and diet therapy. The standardized diet prescribed consisted of regular food without a fiber supplement and met the nutrient requirements according to the recommended daily allowance. The fiber content was 9.0 to 11.9 g for patients aged less than 6 years and 12.0 to 18.0 g for patients older than 6...

Association between type of feeding at discharge from the hospital and nutritional status of very low birth weight preterm infants BJMBR
Martins-Celini,F.P.; Gonçalves-Ferri,W.A.; Aragon,D.C.; Bernichi,J.P.; Calixto,C.; Sacramento,E.M.F.; Santos,M.A.; Martinez,F.E..
The ideal feeding for premature babies has been the source of extensive debate. The aim of this study was to assess the association between type of feeding at discharge and the nutritional status of very low birth weight infants. This was a retrospective cohort of preterm babies with birth weight ≤1500 g, born between January 2006 and December 2013. The infants were divided into 3 groups according to type of feeding at discharge: exclusive breast milk (group 1), mixed feeding (group 2) and exclusive artificial formula (group 3). Frequencies of each group were calculated, as well as mean Z-score differences in weight, length and head circumference. Six hundred and forty-nine newborns were included. The mean weight of groups 1, 2, and 3 was 1338.7, 1104.0,...

Early weaning impairs body composition in male mice BJPS
Borges,Maria Carolina; Rogero,Marcelo Macedo; Pires,Ivanir Santana de Oliveira; Borelli,Primavera; Tirapegui,Julio.
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of early weaning on body composition and on parameters related to nutritional status in mice. The experimental group consisted of male Swiss Webster mice that were weaned early (at postnatal day fourteen) and fed an appropriate diet for growing rodents until postnatal day twenty-one (EW group). The control group consisted of male mice breastfed until postnatal day twenty-one (CON group). All animals were sacrificed on the twenty-first day of life. The EW group showed a decrease in liver and muscle protein content and concentration, brain protein concentration, brain DNA content and concentration, as well as liver and muscle protein/RNA ratio (p<0.05). Concerning body composition, the EW mice showed increased...

Changes caused by heavy metals in micronutrient content and antioxidant system of forage grasses used for phytoremediation: an overview Ciência Rural
Rabêlo,Flávio Henrique Silveira; Borgo,Lucélia.
ABSTRACT: An increase in the content of heavy metals in the environment causes many socio-environmental problems, and phytoremediation is a tool to reduce the environmental impact caused by these elements, with prospects for the use of forage grasses. This group of plants features characteristics for the environment-decontamination process, but further studies are necessary about the damages caused by heavy metals on the uptake of cationic micronutrients and on the antioxidant system, which are essential processes for the growth of plants in contaminated sites. Exposure of forage grasses to heavy metals results in a lower content of Mn in the shoots of almost all plants, but the contents of Cu, Fe, and Zn vary according to heavy metal and forage grass....
