Energy embodiment in Brazilian agriculture: an overview of 23 crops Scientia Agricola
Veiga,João Paulo Soto; Romanelli,Thiago Libório; Gimenez,Leandro Maria; Busato,Patrizia; Milan,Marcos.
The amount of energy required to produce a commodity or to supply a service varies from one production system to another and consequently giving rise to differing levels of environmental efficiency. Moreover, since energy prices have been continuously increasing over time, this energy amount may be a factor that has economic worth. Biomass production has a variety of end-products such as food, energy, and fiber; thus, taking into account the similarity in end-product of different crops (e.g.: sunflower, peanuts, or soybean for oil) it is possible to evaluate which crops require less energy per functional unit, such as starch, oil, and protein. This information can be used in decision-making about policies for food safety or bioenergy. In this study, 23...

Discrimination of maize inbreds for kernel quality traits and fatty acid composition by a multivariate technique - doi: 10.4025/actasciagron.v33i4.11031 Agronomy
Egesel, Cem Ömer; Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University; Kahrıman, Fatih; Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University; Gül, Muhammet Kemal; K+S Nitrogen GmbH, Maslak-Şişli.
Quality is considered to be mainly related to protein and oil concentration in maize kernel. Great effort has been made through the elevation of oil and protein concentrations; however, studies to enhance the composition quality of oil have been limited. Maize genotypes with special fatty acid composition may confer different end uses and added value. We investigated eight maize inbreds for kernel quality and fatty acid composition. Kernel samples from a two-year experiment were analyzed for oil, protein, moisture and ash, as well as several fatty acids, including oleic, linoleic, and linolenic acids. Results indicated differences among the genotypes for all traits, except for behenic acid. A680 appeared to be a promising parent to elevate oleic acid,...

Influence of the temperature, pressure and viscosity on the oil measurement with turbine type measurers BABT
Damasceno,Magalí Araújo; Penha,Janaina Karla de Medeiros; Silva Junior,Nivaldo Ferreira da; Felipe,Raimundo Nonato B.; Felipe,Renata Carla Tavares dos Santos; Medeiros,Gilson Gomes de.
The flow measurement of liquids and gases is a necessity in many industrial applications. There is a great amount of measurers for such purpose, as, for example, the coriolis, positive displacement and type turbine measurers. A measurer sufficiently used for the oil flow measurement is the turbine type, because it uses the proper extracted energy of the measured flow for its functioning, moreover is also used as standard for the calibration of other measurers. For this reason, it is important to study the parameters that influence the measurement process for turbine measurers. In Brazil, to measure the volume of oil, regardless the type of measurer, it is necessary to observe "Portaria Conjunta Nº. 1", of June 19, 2000, that approved the Technical...

Surviving probability indicators of landing juvenile magellanic penguins arriving along the southern Brazilian coast BABT
Rodrigues,Sandra Carvalho; Adornes,Andréa Corrado; Santos Filho,Euclydes Antônio dos; Silva Filho,Rodolfo Pinho; Colares,Elton Pinto.
The aim of this work was to monitor and study the hematocrit and weight of juvenile penguins, with and without oil cover, found alive along the southern coast of Brazil, after capture, as well as before eventual death or release. Released juvenile penguins showed higher weight and hematocrit (3.65 ± 0.06 kg and 44.63 ± 0.29%, respectively) than those that died (2.88 ± 0.08 kg and 34.42 ± 1.70%, respectively). Penguins with higher hematocrit and weight after capture had higher mean weight gain than their counterparts with smaller hematocrit and weight after the capture. Besides, juveniles with higher hematocrit and weight after the capture had higher survival rates, independent of the presence or absence of oil. The results suggested that juveniles covered...

Preference for oils with different types of genetic modifcations in Temuco, Araucanía Region, Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Schnettler,Berta; González,Abel; Avila,Richard; Miranda,Horacio; Sepúlveda,José; Denegri,Marianela.
Considering that attitudes towards biotechnology depend on the type of modifcation used, a study was performed to determine the importance of the type of Genetic Modifcation (GM) in preferences for oil purchased by consumers in Temuco (Araucanía Region, Chile) and the existence of different market segments using a survey of 400 people. A conjoint analysis demonstrated that the type of GM (70.3%) was more important than the price of the oil (29.7%). Four segments were distinguished using an analysis of hierarchical conglomerates, but the type of GM was the most important factor in all segments. Two groups preferred oil without GM and oil with GM that reduces the use of pesticides and rejected oil with GM that increases calcium content; the larger of these...

Genetic divergence of soybean genotypes in relation to grain components Ciência Rural
Rodrigues,Josiane Isabela da Silva; Arruda,Klever Márcio Antunes; Cruz,Cosme Damião; Barros,Everaldo Gonçalves de; Piovesan,Newton Deniz; Moreira,Maurilio Alves.
ABSTRACT: The objective of this paper was to estimate the genetic divergence among 49 soybean ( Glycine max L. Merrill .) genotypes to assist grain quality-focused breeding programs in the choice of progenitors. The genetic divergence was estimated using the Mahalanobis generalized distance from the percentages of protein, oil, and fatty acids oleic, linoleic and linolenic after cultivation of genotypes in different environments. Genotypes were grouped by agglomerative methods and the two and three-dimensional projections of the distance matrix were obtained. The average protein and oil contents in the four environments ranged from 34.25 to 45.18% and from 16.48 to 23.01%, respectively. The average contents of the fatty acids oleic, linoleic and linolenic...
