A thalassomyces fagei (Boschma) se lo encontró como parásito de Euphausia distinguenda, extendiendo así la distribución de estos huéspedes-parásitos para el Pacífico Ecuatorial Oriental. El mismo parásito se lo encontró en Nyctiphanes simplex, en muestras provenientes de las islas Gálapagos, siendo ésta la primera cita para el área del Pacífico.

El pescado salado suele ser atacado por diversos parásitos, cuando es almacenado en condiciones inapropiadas. Entre ellos se encuentran los coleópteros y principalmente Dermestes lardarius que ha sido descrito en diversas partes del mundo. En nuestro país hemos constatado que dos especies distintas parasitan las diferentes preparaciones de pescado salado seco, Dermestes maculata y Dermestes peruviana.

Introducción: las infecciones causadas por protozoos del género Leishmania constituyen un problema de salud mundial con una alta prevalencia en países subdesarrollados. En la actualidad no existe una vacuna contra esta enfermedad y el tratamiento utilizado es deficiente, por lo que la búsqueda de medicamentos más efectivos y seguros constituye una urgente necesidad. Objetivo: evaluar la actividad antileishmanial in vitro de 6 extractos acuosos e hidroalcohólicos de organismos marinos. Métodos: se determinó la actividad frente a promastigotes y amastigotes de Leishmania amazonensis, así como su toxicidad frente a macrófagos peritoneales de ratones BALB/c. Nematodes parásitos como indicadores biológicos en las especies Macruronus magellanicus y Merluccius hubbsi (Pisces, Gadiformes) OceanDocs

Parasites nematodes as biological tags of Macruronus magellanicus (longtail hake) and Merluccius hubbsi (hake) colleted between 34°- 55°S in the SW Atlantic were studied. Adult specimens of Hysterothylacium aduncum, Ascarophis marina and Ichthytofilaria argentinensis, and the third-stage specimens of H. aduncum, Anisakis simplex and Contracaecum aduncum were described. Histological studies showed that I. argentinensis provokes tissue reactions in the swim bladder of M. hubbsi. A wide distributional range of species can be represented by many fish populations or fishing stocks. As these can overlap in space, the proper identification of stocks is necessary for fisheries management. The parasitologic method is one currently used to determine stocks....

Presencia de Platasterias latiradiata Gray en aguas ecuatorianas OceanDocs

Se amplía la distribución biogeográfica de Platasterias latiradiata (Gray), hasta el Ecuador, considerada un fósil viviente, la que ha sido encontrada sólo en el Pacífico Litoral mexicano y centroamericano. En un mapa se da a conocer la nueva distribución, así como también un estudio comparativo de la morfología externa de una manera similar a los reportes y contribuciones de Caso, M, (1961, 1970, 1976). También se incluye una tabla con las medidas de algunas partes del cuerpo consideradas de importancia taxonómica y fotografías mostrando la predación de gasterópodos (Olivela semistriata) como uno de sus alimentos preferidos.

El primer registro de un rizocéfalo (cirripedia, rhizocephala) parasito de un anomuro (anomura), en las aguas cubanas OceanDocs

Se presentan los resultados obtenidos luego del estudio de un rizocéfalo encontrado parasitando un anomuro, colectado en las aguas de la península de Guanahacabibes, en la región suroccidental de Cuba. El parásito fue localizado en el costado del abdomen de su hospedero. Es la primera consignación de este tipo de relación ínter específica, en las aguas cubanas.

Four species of the family Octopodidae were reported to occur along the Argentine coast Octopus tehuelchus, Eledone massyae, Enteroctopus megalocyathus and Robsonella fontaniana. The first two are distributed from Brazil to south of Rawson and San Jorge Gulf, respectively, in warm-temperate waters. E.megalocyathus and R.fontaniana are of Subantarctic origin, the first ranging from San Matias Gulf to Magellan Strait, the Beagle Channel and Malvinas Islands; R.fontaniana is distributed from San Matias Gulf southwards, with records in North Patagonian and San Jorge Gulfs, Chile and Peru. A synopsis of information about taxonomical status, patterns of geographic distribution and biological aspects of these four coastal octopodids is given.

An update of the knowledge on the three most important ommastrephid species that inhabit the SW Atlantic: Illex argentinus, Martialia hyadesi and Ommastrephes bartramii, is presented. Up to the moment, only I.argentinus was intensively studied. Its distribution, population structure, reproduction, growth and paralarval development are analyzed, togheter with other aspects of its biology, such as feeding, predators and parasites. Also its utilization for human consmption is considered. Regarding M.hyadesi and O.bartrami, information on their distribution and biology is presented.

Efectos del deterioro producido por mixosporidios de la especie Kudoa rosenbuschi en la musculatura de Merluccius hubbsi OceanDocs

Parasitized and non-parasitized hake fillets obtained at fish processing plants were compared in order to assess the efects of Kudoa rosenbuschi myxosporidia on muscle of Merluccius hubbsi. The following studies were carried out: a)incidence and severity of parasitism; b)proteolytic and spoilage at a histologic level; c)pH and proximal composition in parasitized and non-parasitized fillets; and c)parasitism action on gelified products. Gel strength, elasticity and organoleptic level in gelified products were lower for parasitized samples. Recommendations are put forward as to conditioning and cooling of the catch and subsequent processing in order to lessen the effects of parasitism.

Ecological studies of parasites of commercially important fish species along the Kenyan Coast OceanDocs

This study has been carried out over a period of four months (August, November 2001 and January, March 2002). The study aimed at establishing the magnitude of parasitization in different fish species as well as quantifying the relationship between the parasites and their fish hosts. This paper summarizes the present knowledge on Merluccius hubbsi and its fishery in Argentina, based on the model proposed by the Technical Secretary of Comisión Técnica Mixta del Frente Marítimo, in 1990. It includes the taxonomic location of the species, its geographical distribution, stock unity, structure and population dynamics. It describes the fishing gear and fishing operations and presents the available information on selectivity and discards. The paper shows the data landings separated by fleet. Exploitation regulatory measures in force are included.

Se describen y se ilustran seis especies de parásitos pertenecientes a la familia Acanthocolpidae encontradas en 19 especies de peces en su mayoría de considerable importancia económica. El estudio taxonómico de estos parásitos se realizó en la Ciénaga Grande de Santa Marta, al norte de Colombia, desde Enero de 1978 hasta Junio de 1979.

The life cycle of <i>Anguillicola crassus</i> OMA

For some years now the parasitic swim bladder nematode <i>Anguillicola crassus</i> of the European eel <i>Anguilla anguilla</i> L., has been reported from several European countries. The entire life history of this parasite has recently been elucidated in our laboratory. Young larvae leave the swim bladder of the host via the pneumatic duct and reach the water through the digestive tract. They are ingested by small copepods (Cyclopoida), which act as intermediate hosts. Larvae remain in the hemocoel until the copepods are eaten by the final host, the European eel. Larvae penetrate through the intestinal wall and reach the swim bladder where they develop into adults. When infected copepods are eaten by other small fish, such as carp...

Paratenic hosts of the swimbladder nematode <i>Anguillicola crassus</i> OMA

The host specificity and population dynamics of <i>Anguillicola crassus</i> in a number of paratenic hosts were investigated. Various freshwater fish species were sampled monthly (March 1990 to March 1991) from the Kolenhaven (Albertcanal, Genk, Belgium) and examined for L<sub>3</sub>-larvae of <i>Anguillicola crassus</i>.
