Effects that nutritional and saline gradients have on the growth of Passiflora mucronata Lam. and Canavalia rosea (Sw.) DC. found in the restinga of Brazil Acta Botanica
Lourenço Junior,Jehová; Zambom,Oberdan; Rossi,Magda Santos; Cuzzuol,Geraldo Rogério Faustini.
Salinity and fertility are the main factors cited in Within the restinga (coastal woodland) biome in Brazil, the positioning of Canavalia rosea and Passiflora mucronata occur, respectively, near the shore-in the creeping psammophyte formation (CPF) - and far from the shore - in the Palmae formation (PF). The hypothesis that such positioning is related to salinity and fertility was tested by applying a salt gradient (increasing solutions of NaCl) and a nutritional gradient (different proportions of Hoagland solution). Neither species survived in solutions over 200 mM of NaCl. The shoots of P. mucronata showed negative growth (lower dry mass) in the first week of exposure to saline solutions. The roots of C. rosea showed great sensitivity to salinity, which...

Soares,Taliane Leila; Jesus,Onildo Nunes de; Souza,Everton Hilo de; Santos-Serejo,Janay Almeida dos; Oliveira,Eder Jorge de.
The characterization and viability of pollen grains are useful tools to guide crosses in breeding programs. The objective of this study was to describe the morphological patterns and viability of pollen grains from five accessions of Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa O. Deg. and five accessions of Passiflora setacea DC. Pollen morphology descriptions were made using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, whereas the viability analysis was performed by in vitro germination and histochemical analysis (Lugol's solution and 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride). Pollen grains assessed for germination were inoculated in culture medium containing Ca(NO3).4H2O (0.03%), Mg(SO4).7H2O (0.02%), KNO3 (0.01%), H3BO3 (0.01%), sucrose (15%) and agar (0.8%)....

Comparative pollen morphological analysis in the subgenera Passiflora and Decaloba Anais da ABC (AABC)
SOARES,TALIANE L.; JESUS,ONILDO N.; SOUZA,EVERTON H.; ROSSI,MÔNICA L.; OLIVEIRA,EDER J..
ABSTRACT The genus Passiflora is the most diversified of the Passifloraceae, and its palynology presents wide morphological variability. The objective of the study was to evaluate the pollen morphology of 18 Passiflora species in order to identify informative pollinic characteristics to contribute to the taxonomic classification of the genus. The morphology of the pollen grains and the exine structure were investigated using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Differences in the pollen morphology were found in the studied species, mainly in terms of shape, pollen aperture and ornamentation pattern of the exine. Most of the species belonging to the subgenus Passiflora presented ornamented 6-syncolpate pollen grains with an oblate-spheroidal...

Effect of two wild rootstocks of genus Passiflora L. on the content of antioxidants and fruit quality of yellow passion fruit Bragantia
Salazar,Alejandro Hurtado; Silva,Danielle Fabíola Pereira da; Bruckner,Claudio Horst.
ABSTRACT The nutritional importance of the fruit of passionfruit has prompted studies to assess its composition and antioxidant content and to evaluate it as a functional food in fresh fruit and concentrated juice markets. Currently, the use of wild species as rootstock has been recommended mainly for their positive effects such as tolerance to disease attack and maintenance of fruit quality of grafted cultivars. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of wild species of Passiflora gibertii N.E. Br. and Passiflora mucronata Lam as rootstock on the content of antioxidants and fruit quality of Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa. The experimental design was completely randomized with four treatments and 25 replications, with a total of 100 experimental...

Induction and Morpho-Ultrastructural Analysis of Organogenic Calli of a Wild Passionfruit BABT
Carvalho,Milene Alves de Figueiredo; Paiva,Renato; Stein,Vanessa Cristina; Herrera,Raírys Cravo; Porto,Jorge Marcelo Padovani; Vargas,Daiane Peixoto; Alves,Eduardo.
This work studied a new protocol for organogenic calli induction and characterization of the morphology and ultrastructure of callogenesis in leaf explants of Passiflora gibertii N. E. Brown, a native passion fruit species from Brazil. Calli induction was performed in different growth conditions (light and dark), different MS medium salt concentrations (MS and MS half strength) and the presence or absence of coconut water. The leaf explants maintained in the dark were more responsive to bud formation. In order to reduce spending on in vitro culture, the most suitable induction medium for P. gibertii organogenesis could, therefore be the MS half strength salt concentration medium maintained in the dark. The addition of coconut water to the culture medium...

Sedative and anxiolytic effects of methanolic extract from the leaves of Passiflora actinia BABT
Santos,Kely Cristina dos; Kurtz,Stella Maris Tessaro Figura; Müller,Simony Davet; Biavatti,Maique Weber; Oliveira,Rúbia Maria Monteiro Weffort de; Santos,Cid Aimbiré de Moraes.
Leaves from several Passiflora species are largely employed in the Brazilian folk medicine as anxiolytic and sedative. In this work the anxiolytic, sedative-like properties and liquid chromatography analysis of methanolic extract of Passiflora actinia were evaluated. The methanol extract and all of its fractions presented significant sedative-like effect in elevated plus-maze and open field tests. Only the aqueous fraction of the methanol extract showed selective anxiolytic activity (30 mg/kg). Chromatographic analysis of the active fractions showed the presence of isovitexin and absence of the classical Passiflora beta-carboline alkaloids or flavonoids such as vitexin, rutin, swertisin, hesperidin and orientin. The tincture obtained from P. actinia leaves...

Interactions between an arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (Scutellospora heterogama) and the root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita) on sweet passion fruit (Passiflora alata) BABT
Anjos,Érika Cristina Teixeira dos; Cavalcante,Uided Maaze Tiburcio; Gonçalves,Danielle Maria Correia; Pedrosa,Elvira Maria Regis; Santos,Venézio Felipe dos; Maia,Leonor Costa.
The effects of inoculation of sweet passion fruit plants with the arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungus Scutellospora heterogama on the symptoms produced by Meloidogyne incognita race 1 and its reproduction were evaluated in two greenhouse experiments. In the 1st, the M. incognita (5000 eggs/plant) and S. heterogama (200 spores/plant) inoculations were simultaneous; in the 2nd, the nematodes were inoculated 120 days after the fungal inoculation. In both the experiments, 220 days after AM fungal inoculation, plant growth was stimulated by the fungus. In disinfested soil, control seedlings (without S. heterogama) were intolerant to parasitism of M. incognita, while the growth of mycorrhized seedlings was not affected. Sporulation of S. heterogama was negatively...
