Comparative serology of the marine fish pathogen Vibrio anguillarum OMA
Grisez, L.; Ollevier, F.P..
The different serotyping systems, based on thermostable O antigens, reported for Vibrio anguillarum and V. ordalii were compared by quantitative agglutination, sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and subsequent silver staining or Western blotting (immunoblotting) of purified lipopolysaccharide (LPS), using polyclonal rabbit antisera. The results demonstrate that 16 different serotypes within V. anguillarum (designated 01 to 016) can be distinguished. Each of these serotypes is characterized by a distinct polysaccharide banding pattern, as revealed by silver-stained gels of purified LPS. The comparative analysis allowed a complete alignment of the different stereotypes for the...

Extended serotyping scheme for Vibrio anguillarum with the definition and characterization of seven provisional O-serogroups OMA
Pedersen, K.; Grisez, L.; van Houdt, R.; Tiainen, T.; Ollevier, F.P.; Larsen, J.L..
The present paper summarizes the serotyping scheme of the fish pathogenic bacterium Vibrio anguillarum and defines seven additional O-serogroups. Strains, collected in our laboratories that were nontypable with antisera against the previously defined 16 O-serotypes, were used for generating new antisera and were characterized further by means of LPS profiles, Western blots, and serological reactions. On the basis of the results, it is suggested that the seven new O-serogroups are to be included in the existing serotyping system as serotypes O17-O23. However, the existence of further V. anguillarum strains that were not typable with any of the 23 O-antisera suggested the existence of additional...

Medeiros, José George Ferreira; Silva, Bruno Brito; Araújo Neto, Aderson Costa; Nascimento, Luciana Cordeiro.
Most pathogens that cause diseases in crops can be transported and transmitted by seeds, with great economic significance. The objective of this work was to assess the incidence of pathogens and their effect in the germination and vigor of Caesalpinia pulcherrima L. seeds. The seed sanity experiment was completely randomized with five treatments, and ten repetitions. The seeds were immersed in extracts of Allamanda cathartica, Momordica charantia and Foenicullum. vulgare for five minutes, and the control was immersed in sterile water. For the germination test, 200 seeds were used, distributed in four replicates of 50 seeds per treatment. The vigor tests consisted of the first count and germination speed index. The evaluation of fungi transmission were...

ANTIMICROBIAL DRUG USE AND VETERINARY COSTS IN U.S. LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION AgEcon
Mathews, Kenneth H., Jr..
Antimicrobial drugs are fed to animals at low levels to treat diseases, to promote growth, and to increase feed efficiency. Incorporating low levels of antimicrobial drugs in livestock feeds has been shown to be a factor stimulating the development of antimicrobial drug resistant bacteria in livestock. Since many of the drugs used to treat livestock are the same as or are related to drugs used in human health care, there is concern that resistant organisms may pass from animals to humans through the handling of animals or food derived from animals. The movement of pathogens from animals to humans, and vice versa, has been documented, but the extent to which it has occurred or could occur is unknown. Although it is estimated that as little as 10 percent of...

The present work aimed characterize isolates of C. lindemuthianum race 65 from different regions in Brazil by ITS sequencing. A total of 17 isolates of race 65, collected in the states of Mato Grosso, Minas Gerais, Paraná, Santa Catarina and São Paulo, were studied. Analysis of the sequences of isolates 8, 9, 12, 14 and 15 revealed the presence of two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the ITS1 region at the same positions. These isolates, when analyzed together with the sequence of isolate 17, revealed a SNP in the ITS2 region. The highest genetic dissimilarity, observed between isolates 11 and 3 and between isolates 11 and 10, was 0.772. In turn, isolates 7 and 2 were the most similar, with a value of 0.002 for genetic distance. The phylogenetic...

Beyond diversity loss and climate change: Impacts of Amazon deforestation on infectious diseases and public health Anais da ABC (AABC)
ELLWANGER,JOEL HENRIQUE; KULMANN-LEAL,BRUNA; KAMINSKI,VALÉRIA L.; VALVERDE-VILLEGAS,JACQUELINE MARÍA; VEIGA,ANA BEATRIZ G. DA; SPILKI,FERNANDO R.; FEARNSIDE,PHILIP M.; CAESAR,LÍLIAN; GIATTI,LEANDRO LUIZ; WALLAU,GABRIEL L.; ALMEIDA,SABRINA E.M.; BORBA,MAURO R.; HORA,VANUSA P. DA; CHIES,JOSÉ ARTUR B..
Abstract Amazonian biodiversity is increasingly threatened due to the weakening of policies for combating deforestation, especially in Brazil. Loss of animal and plant species, many not yet known to science, is just one among many negative consequences of Amazon deforestation. Deforestation affects indigenous communities, riverside as well as urban populations, and even planetary health. Amazonia has a prominent role in regulating the Earth’s climate, with forest loss contributing to rising regional and global temperatures and intensification of extreme weather events. These climatic conditions are important drivers of emerging infectious diseases, and activities associated with deforestation contribute to the spread of disease vectors. This review...

Prevalence of pathogens in cystic fibrosis patients in Bahia, Brazil BJID
Santana,Maria Angélica; Matos,Eliana; Fontoura,Maria do Socorro; Franco,Rosana; Barreto,Danyella; Lemos,Antônio Carlos M..
INTRODUCTION: Recurrent respiratory infections account for most of the morbidity and mortality of cystic fibrosis patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The objective was to determine the prevalence of pathogens isolated from lower respiratory tract secretions in cystic fibrosis patients. In this descriptive observational study, data from 69 patients was collected from medical records. RESULTS: The microorganisms that were identified included 36.2% P. aeruginosa, 28.9% S. Aureus, 4.3% K. pneumoniae, 1.5% H. influenzae, 1.5% E. coli, 1.5% S. maltoophilia, and in 27.5% the flora was normal. The prevalence of P. aeruginosa was 83% in patients under two years of age, demonstrating early colonization. CONCLUSION: P. aeruginosa and S. aureus were the most prevalent...

Effect of rosemary essential oil and modified-atmosphere packaging (MAP) on meat quality and survival of pathogens in poultry fillets BJM
Kahraman,Tolga; Issa,Ghassan; Bingol,Enver Baris; Kahraman,Beren Basaran; Dumen,Emek.
The effect of rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) essential oil (REO) and modified-atmosphere packaging (MAP) on the survival of certain pathogens (Salmonella Typhimurium and Listeria monocytogenes) in poultry fillets and on their meat quality during 7 days of refrigerated storage were investigated. Because REO at 0.05% and 0.1% had weak antibacterial activity and REO at 0.3%, 0.5% and 1.0% imparted unacceptable organoleptic properties, only REO at 0.2% was used to treat the poultry meat. The results showed that adding 0.2% REO to poultry fillets did not reduce the size of the population of S. Typhimurium and L. monocytogenes. However, REO treatment significantly decreased the L* (lightness) value and increased the a* (redness) value of stored fillets,...

Microbiology of organic and conventionally grown fresh produce BJM
Maffei,Daniele F.; Batalha,Erika Y.; Landgraf,Mariza; Schaffner,Donald W.; Franco,Bernadette D.G.M..
ABSTRACT Fresh produce is a generalized term for a group of farm-produced crops, including fruits and vegetables. Organic agriculture has been on the rise and attracting the attention of the food production sector, since it uses eco-agricultural principles that are ostensibly environmentally-friendly and provides products potentially free from the residues of agrochemicals. Organic farming practices such as the use of animal manure can however increase the risk of contamination by enteric pathogenic microorganisms and may consequently pose health risks. A number of scientific studies conducted in different countries have compared the microbiological quality of produce samples from organic and conventional production and results are contradictory. While...
