Dao, Jean-claude; Buestel, Dominique; Gerard, Andre; Halary, C.; Cochard, Jean-claude.
The king scallop (Pecten maximus L.) has been the object of some in-depth studies since 1973 with the double aim of natural resources management and extensive aquaculture in mind. The results obtained during the first ten years enabled the launch of a pluri-annual 1983-1987 program which aims to demonstrate the re-populating of the roadsted of Brest and the introduction of new management methods in the Bay of Saint-Brieuc. The technical results of the resource management and of the aquaculture operations are described. They enabled the stabilisation of the annual production of the Saint-Brieuc deposit as well as to foresee a new biomass of 80-100 tonnes of spawners per year in the roadsted of Brest. However, the implementation of all these developments is...

Widowati, L; Cochard, Jean-claude; Dorange, G; Le Pennec, M.
To date, it has been impossible to fertilize the oocytes of ripe Pecten maximus obtained by gonad stripping as it is routinely done in hatchery with Crassostrea gigas . The events occurring between artificial induction of spawning and normal fertilization were studied experimentally in order to explain this difference. Fertilization and rearing trials were performed on oocytes obtained from the gonads of both species by scarification, by aspiration from genital ducts (of P. maximus only) and after spawning. Every batch of oocytes was fixed for histological study. Serial sections of the gonad of a fixed spawning P. maximus were made to reveal modifications of the nucleus of the oocytes during their expulsion. In P. maximus the stripped oocytes can be...

Effect of the probiotic strain Phaeobacter gallaeciensis after bacterial challenge on the complete larval development of Pecten maximus ArchiMer
Genard, Bertrand; Larouche, Olivier; Nicolas, Jean-louis; Miner, Philippe; Beaudin, Marie-lou; Tremblay, Rejean.
The aim of this project was to evaluate the impact of probiotic (Phaeobacter gallaeciensis, X34 strain) treatment on the complete development (from veliger to metamorphosis) of Pecten maximus larvae in the context of a bacterial challenge and in conditions more representative of hatchery practices. To that effect, the present study was divided into two main steps. In the first, we used in vitro analyses (antibiograms and microplate assays) to validate the inhibition abilities of X34 on the growth of four Vibrio pathogen species. During the second step, we added pathogens (Vibrio pectenicida) into rearing tanks after two weeks of pre-treatment with the probiotic and then followed the larval development of Pecten maximus through the monitoring of survival...

ArchiMer
Foucher, Eric.
The assessment of the King scallop stock of the Bay of Seine (Pecten maximus) was carried out in July 2019, in the Bay of Seine sensu stricto, located in French territorial waters (from the Normandy coast to the south to the limit of 12 nautical miles to the North), as well as the bordering zone lying north of this 12-mile limit and up to a latitude of 49°48N to the North, called "Extérieur Baie de Seine". For this, a scientific survey, based on a stratified random sampling plan, was conducted aboard the F/R Thalia, a coastal research vessel of the French Oceanographic Fleet. Nearly 170 sampling points were completed in the whole area. Analysis of these data leads to an overall increase in exploitable biomass over the entire area. Outside the Bay of Seine,...

French scallops: A new host for ostreid herpesvirus-1 ArchiMer
Arzul, Isabelle; Nicolas, Jean-louis; Davison, Andrew J.; Renault, Tristan.
Sporadic high mortalities were reported among larval French scallops (Pecten maximus). Electron microscopy of moribund larvae revealed particles with the characteristics of a herpesvirus in association with cellular lesions. PCR and DNA sequencing showed that the virus is a variant of ostreid herpesvirus-1 that has already been described in clams and oysters. This is the first description of a herpesvirus infection of a scallop species. The virus was transmitted successfully from an extract of infected scallop larvae to uninfected scallop or oyster (Crassostrea, gigas) larvae, demonstrating that it is able to infect both species. Detection of viral DNA in asymptomatic adult scallops by in situ hybridisation indicates that the herpesvirus may have been...

La Biominéralisation de Pecten maximus L. : Anomalies liées aux Perturbations du Milieu ArchiMer
Larvor, Helene.

COMOR 32 (8-23 juillet 2002) ArchiMer
Foucher, Eric.
Scientific scallop surveys called COMOR are carried out in the bay of Seine since 1976. Results are used by fishermen’ associations and by fishing administration to lead management measures. In this report, the scientific results of the survey COMOR 32 realised in July 2002 are described. Abundance and growth indices for scallop, by age and area, are presented. During these surveys, data about most abundant benthic species are also collected since 1998. A first assessment with five years data is made here. A global descriptive analysis is undertaken about all the species present on scallops grounds. A special zoom is applied on both species whitch could be exploited (whelk Buccinum undatum and queen scallop Aequipecten opercularis) and three competitive...

Buestel, Dominique; Dao, Jean-claude; Lemarie, Gilles.
Since 1973 some pectinides spat collection experiments have been conducted by the Fishery team of the Brittany Oceanology Centre, on two deposits exploited by commercial fishing: the roadsted of Brest and especially the St-Brieuc Bay The experiment carried out in 1973 was the first French attempt on this group of species and the results have been very encouraging: although the technology used was rudimentary, the best collectors enabled the collection of 30 to 50 king scallops (Pecten maximus) each and of 6,000 to 8,000 scallops (Chlamys varia and Chlamys opercularis). The research protocol used enabled the determination of the sequential aspect of the fixation, and of the growth speed of the young animals. In addition, the difference between both deposits...

Fifas, Spyros; Dao, Jean-claude; Boucher, Jean.
This paper proposes an empirical model for the recruitment of the scallop stock, Pecten maximus (L.), in Saint-Brieuc Bay (English Channel, France). This stock shows important fluctuations in recruitment. The use of traditional models for fish population dynamics based upon an equilibrium state were inadéquate. This model includes three independent variables: spawning biomass, effects of fishing effort on the unexploited year classes, and temperature. Correlations between these expressions of independent parameters and recruitment are systematically analysed. The choice of the final model relies on minimization of the total variance unexplained portion. Introduction of fishing pattern into the model is realized by testing fishing effort effects upon two...

Feeding and energetics of the great scallop, Pecten maximus, through a DEB model ArchiMer
Lavaud, Romain; Flye-sainte-marie, Jonathan; Jean, Fred; Emmery, Antoine; Strand, Oivind; Kooijman, Sebastiaan A. L. M..
We developed a full life-cycle bioenergetic model for the great scallop P. maximusrelying on the concepts of the Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) theory. The covariation method was implemented to estimate the parameters of a standard DEB model. Such models are able to predict various metabolic processes from a food availability marker and temperature in the environment. However, suspension-feeders are likely to feed on various trophic sources, from microalgae cells to detritus. They are also able to sort and select food particles very efficiently, depending on their size, energetic value or quality. The present model includes a mechanistic description of the feeding processes, based on Kooijman’s Synthesizing Unit principle which allow to deal with several food...

A coupled biophysical model for the distribution of the great scallop Pecten maximus in the English Channel ArchiMer
Le Goff, Clement; Lavaud, Romain; Cugier, Philippe; Jean, Fred; Flye-sainte-marie, Jonathan; Foucher, Eric; Desroy, Nicolas; Fifas, Spyros; Foveau, Aurelie.
In this paper we used a modelling approach integrating both physical and biological constraints to understand the biogeographical distribution of the great scallop Pecten maximus in the English Channel during its whole life cycle. A 3D bio-hydrodynamical model (ECO-MARS3D) providing environmental conditions was coupled to (i) a population dynamics model and (ii) an individual ecophysiological model (Dynamic Energy Budget model). We performed the coupling sequentially, which underlined the respective role of biological and physical factors in defining P. maximus distribution in the English Channel. Results show that larval dispersion by hydrodynamics explains most of the scallop distribution and enlighten the main known hotspots for the population,...
