Development, sensory profile and physicochemical properties of jabuticaba nectar with lyophilized jussara pulp Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Suemitsu,Laura; Inada,Kim Ohanna Pimenta; Fernandes,Paula de Oliveira; Perrone,Daniel; Monteiro,Mariana; Melo,Lauro.
ABSTRACT Jabuticaba and jussara are both fruits from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest and endangered plant species due to their unsustainable exploitation. In order to protect these plants, it is important to develop products made with these fruits. We have developed a ready-to-drink jabuticaba nectar with the addition of lyophilized jussara pulp (LJP) applying sensory tests, such as acceptance test and Check-All-That-Apply (CATA). Optimal sensory conditions ranged between 150 g L-1 and 200 g L-1 for sucrose concentration and between 450 mL L-1 and 550 mL L-1 for jabuticaba pulp concentration. Just-about-right scale showed that the ideal concentration of LJP used as a natural color additive was 7.2 g L-1 (R2=0.99902). Affective test showed that nectars added...

Infestation of froghopper nymphs changes the amounts of total phenolics in sugarcane Scientia Agricola
Silva,Rafael José Navas da; Guimarães,Eduardo Rossini; Garcia,José Francisco; Botelho,Paulo Sérgio Machado; Ferro,Maria Inês Tiraboschi; Mutton,Miguel Angelo; Mutton,Márcia Justino Rossini.
The increased rate of sugarcane harvest without previous burn has provided a very favorable environment to the froghopper Mahanarva fimbriolata (Stal, 1854), with high moisture and low temperature variation. Few works have studied the response of sugarcane to this pest, so little is known about resistant cultivars. Plant phenolics are widely studied compounds because of their known antiherbivore effect. This research aims to determine if the attack of M. fimbriolata nymphs stimulates the accumulation of total phenolics in sugarcane. The experiment was carried out in greenhouse and arranged in completely randomized design, in a 3 X 2 X 4 factorial with three replications. Second instar nymphs of M. fimbriolata were infested at the following rates: control,...

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and the occurrence of flavonoids in roots of passion fruit seedlings Scientia Agricola
Soares,Ana Cristina Fermino; Martins,Marco Antônio; Mathias,Lêda; Freitas,Marta Simone Mendonça.
Composition and the role of root flavonoids in the regulation of mycorrhizal symbiosis are still poorly understood. Several flavonoids stimulate spore germination, mycelia growth and root colonization by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), and both root colonization and flavonoid composition are affected by plant nutritional status. Effects of AMF on the occurrence and content of aromatic secondary metabolites in the roots of passion fruit seedlings grown under two levels of phosphorus (P) fertilization (10 and 50 mg kg-1 of phosphorus) was studied. Seedlings were inoculated with Glomus clarum and a population of native fungi from a passion fruit plantation. Methanolic extracts of passion fruit seedlings roots were analyzed by high performance liquid...

Abstract Champa (Campomanesia lineatifolia Ruiz & Pav.) is a fruit tree that belongs to Myrtaceae family and is native from the Amazon. Champa fruit has special organoleptic characteristics like its flavor and is an important source of phenolic compounds useful in food industry. Currently, the postharvest process of champa fruit needs to be improved due to fruit losses, which had achieved a 97%. In this sense, the aim of this research was to evaluate microwave extraction to obtain extracts enriched in phenolic compounds from champa fruit. The evaluated variables were as follows: microwave power (100-200W), extraction time (1-2min) and solvent (water, ethanol-water 70:30 and ethanol-water 96:4), respectively. Results showed that the best condition to...

ABSTRACT Capirona decorticans (Rubiaceae) is popularly used to treat warts, wounds, mycoses and scabies, and is also a component of the Ayahuasca tea. Despite its popular use, the phytochemical and pharmacological research on this species is limited. Therefore, this work quantified phenolic compounds in the ethanolic extract (EE) and hydromethanolic fraction (FM) (406, 293 mgEAG g-1, respectively) from leaves of C. decorticans. We identified flavonoids by LC-MS/MS-MMR-ESI (apigenin, rutin, luteolin, miricetin, quercetin, quercetin-3-β-D-glucoside, quercetrin), and evaluated oxidative stress and mutagenic/antimutagenic effect of EE and FM through an in vivo experiment using Swiss mice and cyclophosphamide (CP) as an inducer of DNA damage and oxidative...

Physical and chemical characterization and bioactive compounds from blackberry under calcium chloride application Agronomy
Modesto, Joyce Helena; Mirellys Azevedo Souza, Jackson; Ferraz, Rafael Augusto; Souza Silva, Marcelo; Leonel, Magali; Leonel, Sarita.
Calcium chloride application on fruits maintains the firmness of fruits, decreases storage breakdown and rot, extends shelf-life, and increases vitamin C and calcium content. Blackberries have low post-harvest durability due to the intrinsic characteristics of their fruits, mainly the high respiratory rate and low firmness, which causes problems in the production chain of fresh fruits. The current study aimed to evaluate the effects of pre-harvest application of calcium chloride on the fruits of ‘Tupy’ blackberry (Rubus spp.). A randomized block design for a factorial scheme was used, i.e. calcium chloride concentrations (0, 1.5, 3, and 4.5%) and number of applications (1, 2, and 3). Multiple applications occurred between 5-day intervals. The results...
