Multitrophic relationships, conditional mutualisms, and the study of interaction biodiversity in tropical savannas Neotropical Entomology
Del-Claro,Kleber.
Biodiversity as a focus for conservation efforts has received increased attention since the second half of the last century. Until recently a more landscape-level view of biodiversity has prevailed. This essay proposes to discuss natural diversity in ways that embrace the extreme richness inherent in plant animal interactions, including not only trophic relationships, but also aspects of life history, biology, and behavior of related species. The ant-plant-herbivore systems in Cerrado vegetation are pointed out as good model for gaining a better understanding of "interaction biodiversity".

The timing of evaluation of genebank accessions and the effects of biotechnology AgEcon
Koo, Bonwoo; Wright, Brian D..
The lack of ex-ante evaluation of germplasm in genebanks has been the single most prevalent and long-standing complaint of plant breeders about the management of genebanks. Advances in biotechnology offer the possibility of faster, cheaper, and more efficient evaluation methodologies. Will these new technologies favor ex-post evaluation, as some expect, or will it lead to more ex-ante evaluation? Will it also lead to earlier development of varieties with disease resistance traits in anticipation of actual infestations? Will the prospect of further advances in biotechnology favor delay of evaluation and development? This paper addresses these questions in the case of evaluation of germplasm for resistance to a disease.

Costing the Ex Situ Conservation of Genetic Resources: Maize and Wheat at CIMMYT AgEcon
Pardey, Philip G.; Koo, Bonwoo; Wright, Brian D.; Van Dusen, M. Eric; Skovmand, Bent; Taba, Suketoshi.
Worldwide, the number of genebanks and the amount of seed stored in them has increased substantially over the past few decades. Most attention is focused on the likely benefits from conservation, but conserving germplasm involves costs whose nature and magnitude are largely unknown. Because more resources spent on conserving germplasm often means less spent on characterizing the collection or using the saved seeds in crop-improvement research, knowledge of the costs of germplasm conservation has important, possibly long run, R&D management, policy, and food-security consequences. Moreover, these costs place a lower bound on the benefits deemed likely to justify the expense of saving this seed. In this paper we compile and use a set of cost data for...

Multi-annual climate in Parque Nacional Pan de Azúcar, Atacama Desert, Chile RChHN
THOMPSON,MATTHEW V.; PALMA,BEATRIZ; KNOWLES,JASON T.; HOLBROOK,N. MICHELE.
The lomas formations of the Peruvian and Atacama deserts are characterized by both climatic and floristic spatial heterogeneity, as well as non-contiguous pockets of relatively distinct flora. We examined two distinct types of communities in Parque Nacional Pan de Azúcar in Chile, the low-elevation arroyo and bajada community, and the high-elevation fog-zone community. We determined the distribution with elevation of the dominant perennial plant species in a single arroyo community, as well as the distribution of associated climatic characteristics. Climatic conditions (including air temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed and direction) were recorded from June, 1999, to March, 2001, for the arroyo, as well as for a medium-elevation inland site with...

Morphogenic responses of the roots of Arabidopsis thaliana (Magnoliophyta: Brassicales) to Cr(VI) stress RChHN

The growth response of roots to stress conditions is a strategy that allows the plant to either avoid the adverse conditions or to adapt to them. H an activities have resulted in the accumulation of some metals from certain concentrations have an adverse effect on plant growth. Among these, Chromiumumm (Cr) is a serious pollution caused by metal processing industries and leather tanning. To understand in detail the response of roots Cr(VI) stress, it was used an in vitro system with Arabidopsis thaliana utilizing three experimental conditions. (A) Plants germinated and grown for 6 days, without lateral roots, were transferred to media with different concentrations of Cr(VI). This allowed the evaluation as affecting the growth of the primary root to move...

Determining a model to estimate leaf area in Pornunça (Manihot sp.) using morphometric measures Animal Sciences
Silva, Guilherme de Lira Sobral; Carneiro, Maria Socorro de Souza; Edvan, Ricardo Loiola; Andrade, Alberício Pereira de; Medeiros, Geovergue Rodrigues de; Cândido, Magno José Duarte.
Pornunça is a species of the genus Manihot that has been cultivated as an option for animal feeding in the Brazilian semi-arid. Leaf area (LA) is important to determine forage plant growth, whose evaluation model has to meet the following characteristics: practicality, precision and low cost. The objective of this study was to set a model to determine the leaf area in Pornunça (Manihot sp.) from morphometric measurements of the leaf. The experimental design was in randomized blocks with three methods for determination of leaf area, and three blocks, with 144 replicates (leaves). For the determination of LA, the direct method (FAReal), treadmill leaf area meter (Li-Color 3100©) and linear dimensions were used. Data were subjected to regression analysis....

The physiological role of the unfolded protein response in plants Biol. Res.
Moreno,Adrian A; Orellana,Ariel.
Unfolded protein response (UPR) is a signaling mechanism activated by misfolded protein accumulation in the endoplasmic reticulum. It is a widespread process that has been described in organisms ranging from yeasts to mammals. In recent years, our understanding of UPR signaling pathway in plants has advanced. Two transcription factors from Arabidopsis thaliana have been reported to function as the sensor/ transducer of this response (AtbZIP60 and AtbZIP28). They seem to be involved in both heat and biotic stress. Furthermore, overexpression of one of them (AtbZIP60) produces plants with a higher tolerance for salt stress, suggesting that this transcription factor may play a role in abiotic stress. Furthermore, some data suggest that crosstalk between genes...

Apoplasm hydrostatic pressure on growth of cylindrical cells Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Pessoa,José Dalton Cruz; Calbo,Adonai Gimenes.
According to the model frequently used as reference, plant cell growth occurs only when turgor surpasses a threshold. This model was proposed considering a cylindrical cell of constant wall thickness immerged in a water solution, with viscoelastic behaviour, hydraulic conductivity, variable extensibility, and unidirectional elongation. The author, Lockhart (1965), did not consider the effects of apoplasm hydrostatic potential, a subject treated later by Calbo and Pessoa (1994) who argued that this component of cell potential would interfere with cell growth rate. To evaluate this effect, where possible the same deductive procedures as those employed by Lockhart were used here, which resulted in a set of equivalent equations for cell growth, turgor and...

Micropropagation of Syngonanthus elegantulus Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Pêgo,Rogério Gomes; Paiva,Patrícia Duarte de Oliveira; Paiva,Renato.
The species Syngonanthus elegantulus Ruhland is an important native plant used as cut flowers, but extractive exploration has caused the endangered status of this plant. Therefore, the objective of this study was to establish a protocol of the micropropagation of S. elegantulus. To this end, seed germination was tested in media containing different concentrations of WPM salts. For plantlet establishment, MS and WPM media were evaluated with 50 and 100% of the salt concentrations. Different the sucrose levels in the WPM medium were also evaluated. For multiplication, the plantlets were inoculated in WPM media with 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0 mg L-1 TDZ and 0.0, 0.5 and 1.0 mg L-1 NAA in all possible combinations. The pre-acclimatization effect was tested in...
