The bioactive compounds content in pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) juice is variable and depends on agronomic factors, genetic and fruit maturity. In Chile, the areas with this crop have increased more than 65% in the last 5 years. This paper aims to determine the phenolic composition, antioxidant capacity and chromatic parameters of juices from eight Chilean pomegranate genotypes (PG2 to PG9), containing red (PG2 to PG6) or pink arils (PG7 to PG9). Color, total polyphenol content (using Folin-Ciocalteu reagent), total anthocyanins (by differences in absorbance at different pHs of the juice) and antioxidant capacity (oxygen-radical absorbance capacity, ORAC) were determined. Anthocyanins were identified and quantify using HPLC-DAD and HPLC/ESI-MS, the... |

P.M. Cañon, A.S. González, J.A. Alcalde, and E. Bordeu. 2014. Red wine phenolic composition: the effects of summer pruning and cluster thinning. Cien. Inv. Agr. 41(2): 235-248. The quality of red wine is directly associated with its phenolic composition, which can be controlled using several viticultural techniques that affect the vegetative/productive balance of the plants, such as summer pruning and cluster thinning. However, these techniques may also involve high costs and production losses. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of summer pruning and cluster thinning on the phenolic compositions of grapes and wine over three consecutive seasons. The treatments included long (120 cm shoot length) and short (60 cm shoot length) summer pruning and 50%... |

The extraction of high-quality DNA is essential for studies conducted at the molecular level in species with an abundance of contaminants in their tissues, such as some landraces of potato and maize, in which it is difficult to extract good-quality genomic DNA. Compounds such as polyphenols interfere with the amplification of DNA during polymerase chain reaction (PCR), which makes it difficult to conduct PCR-based studies ofmolecular markers. This article describes a simple and robust protocol for DNA isolation that was applied to potato and maize landraces and resulted in a high DNA concentration with excellent purity and quality. This method is based on the method of Krizman et al. (2006) with some modifications and was tested on potato leaves and young... |

Propolis has been used for millennia for its antimicrobial and pharmaceutical properties, whereas its use as an agricultural antifungal agent has only recently been assessed. The chemical characteristics of six ethanolic extracts of Chilean propolis (EEP-1 to EEP-6) were evaluated. The total polyphenols ranged between 7.8 and 42.3 mg mL-1 equivalents of a 2:1 pinocembrin: galangin standard, and the total flavonoid contents ranged between 4.0 and 19.7 mg mL-1 equivalents of quercetin. A high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) analysis allowed the identification of caffeic acid, myricetin, quercetin, kaempferol, apigenin, pinocembrin, galangin, caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) and rutin. The EEP-3 extract was selected for additional studies based... |

The objective of this study was to characterize for the first time polyphenols and DPPH (2-diphenyl-1-picryhydrazyl radical) antioxidant activity in commonly cultivated accessions of Phaseolus lunatus from an ex situ germplasm collection maintained by Embrapa, in Brazil. Furthermore, the study aimed to detect changes in total polyphenols, total flavonoids and condensed tannin for the same accessions after regeneration in a greenhouse. The results showed the diversity of the lima bean collection for phenolic compounds, which were strongly correlated with antioxidant activity. Lima beans accessions with the highest polyphenols and antioxidant activity were those with colored seeds. Conservation through cold storage of P. lunatus seeds in a cold chamber in... |

ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to examine the impact of cultivar and spear color on the composition of polyphenols in asparagus spears (Asparagus officinalis). The five genotypes (Schwetzinger Meisterschuss, Huchel’s Alpha, Gijnlim, Grolim and Eposs) and three growing conditions of asparagus spears (Asparagus officinalis) were investigated. The polyphenols were determined by applying the HPLC-DAD system. The obtained results were subjected to the principal component analysis. Among the analyzed asparagus samples cv. Grolim contained the highest amounts of phenolic acids and flavonols. The varied quantitative and qualitative composition of polyphenolics resulted most probably from changes occurring during vegetation, such as a lack of access to light... |

ABSTRACT At present, there is little information regarding whether supplementation with Piper betle powder (PBP) and sunflower oil (SFO) has a synergistic effect on lowering methane emissions without negatively impacting ruminal fermentation. This study investigated the effects of PBP, supplemented either with or without SFO, on biogas release, fermentation end-products, and microorganisms in the rumen of lactating goats. The treatments were run in a completely randomized 3 × 5 factorial arrangement, whereby 0, 15, and 30 mg SFO were combined with 0, 15, 30, 45, and 60 mg PBP on a dry matter basis. The outcomes were assessed in vitro. PBP was obtained from the perennial plant Piper betle L., which is an abundant source of flavonoids and their aromatic... |

ABSTRACT Given the potentiality of nanoparticles (NP) to load substances as active principle of drugs, cosmetics and food, there is interest in increasing its production. Particularly in the agroindustrial area, the byproducts are source of functional compounds that must be stabilized by encapsulation, for example, to allow its application. Considering the amount of generated byproducts, it is necessary to understand the encapsulation synthesis in a high scale dimension. In this way, the active compounds vitamin C (from the byproduct of the acerola processing) and polyphenols (from the byproduct of grape processing) were nanoencapsulated into chitosan NP at three reactional volumes: 0.1; 1.0 and 10.0 dm3. The NP were characterized for yield, particle size,... |

Lately, tropical fruit consumption has increased due to a higher knowledge of its nutritional and therapeutic value. The aim of this work was to evaluate the antioxidant potential of cashew apples from different early dwarf clones during their ripening. The clones analyzed included: CCP 76, CCP 09, BRS 189 and BRS 265 in seven ripening stages. They were analyzed for vitamin C, total carotenoid, total anthocyanin, yellow flavonoids and polyphenol content and total antioxidant capacity. Clone BRS 265 ripe cashew apple presented the highest vitamin C content (279.37 mg x 100 g-1). The ripe BRS 189 cashew apple is colored bright red, and its total anthocyanin content was the highest (21.16 mg x 100 g-1). The yellow flavonoids content was higher for ripe CCP 76... |
