Larval development of the land crab <i>Gecarcinus lateralis lateralis</i> (Fréminville,1835) (Brachyura Gecarcinidae) reared in the laboratory OMA
Willems, K.A..
The complete larval development of <i>Gecarcinus lateralis lateralis</i> (Fréminville, 1835), a gecarcinid land crab from Bermuda, is described and illustrated based on larvae reared in the laboratory. The species passes through six (possibly five) zoeal stages and one megalopal stage. The development through six zoeal stages to the young crab stage takes at least 29 days. Morphological characters of <i>G. l. lateralis</i> larvae are compared with gecarcinid species of which the complete larval development is known, i.e., <i>Cardisoma guanhumi</i> and <i>C. carnifex</i>.

Manipulated yeast diets as a partial algal substitute for the nursery culture of the hard clam <i>Mercenaria mercenaria</i> OMA
Coutteau, P.; Hadley, N.H.; Manzi, J.; Sorgeloos, P..
Rearing bivalve molluscs in commercial hatchery and nursery systems has so far relied on the production of live algae, which is costly and often unpredictable. Therefore the development of satisfactory artificial diet would greatly reduce the operating costs of bivalve operations. The development of techniques to improve the nutritional composition and digestibility of yeasts resulted in a product with great potential as a substitute for unicellular algae. Previous work on the Manila clam <i>Tapes semidecussata</i> showed that replacing 80% of the algae by these manipulated yeasts resulted in growth rates of 64 to 93% in comparison with the growth rate obtained for the algal control. In the present study a standard culture test for evaluating...

Onshore nursery rearing of bivalve molluscs in Belgium OMA
Claus, C.; Maeckelberghe, H.; De Pauw, N..
From October to April the growth of spat of <i>Ostrea edulis, Crassostrea gigas</i> and <i>Venerupis semidecussata</i> in an onshore nursery was recorded as a function of water temperature and food level. The results of this study indicate that even very eutrophic water, such as that of the Sluice Dock at Ostend, Belgium, does not provide enough microalgae to sustain growth of bivalve spat during winter, irrespective of whether the water is heated or not. It is necessary to supply additional food (cultured live algae). Food shortage for three months at higher temperature induced a stress situation resulting in high mortality rates, even after transferring all the spat into an optimal combination of temperature and food availability.

Rearing techniques for difficult marine fish larvae OMA
Dhert, Ph.; Divanach, P.; Kentouri, M.; Sorgeloos, P..
In finfish mariculture, seed production and larval rearing still form the bottleneck for all ongrowing operations and are considered as the main limiting factor for industrial development. Through trial and error more than through biological understanding two opposite hatchery techniques have been developed which surprisingly control a multiparametric combination of different factors but aspire to the same objective of conformity with wild standards and the cost-effective production of larvae. In intensive aquaculture, the rearing technique is characterised by high initial larval densities in small tanks under strict hydraulic, thermic, and nutritional conditions. The light conditions are artificial. The temperature and quality of water are controlled. The...

Large-scale microalgae production for nursery rearing of marine bivalves OMA
De Pauw, N.; Verboven, J.; Claus, C..
The feasibility of large-scale bloom induction of nutritionally suited natural phytoplankton species, to feed a semi-industrial nursery of edible shellfish, built on the Belgian coast, was tested. The outdoor microalgal production unit consisted of four tanks of 100 m² surface each (two of 1 m depth and two of 0.5 m depth), equipped with different mixing devices. The cultures were run as chemostats in which seawater was enriched with commercial inorganic N, P and Si fertilizers. Depending on the season, between 5-10 and 80% of the culture volume could be harvested daily, with algal densities ranging from 50,000 to 500,000 cells per ml. By manipulation of operational parameters such as detention time, nutrient levels and nutrient ratios (N: Si: P), unsuited...

Search for beneficial bacterial strains for turbot (<i>Scophthalmus maximus</i> L.) larviculture OMA
Huys, L.; Dhert, P.; Robles, R.; Ollevier, F.P.; Sorgeloos, P.; Swings, J..
The aerobic bacterial flora in the gut of turbot larvae and their influence on larval survival was examined. Two turbot experiments were run with six replicates each time. Large variation, from 0% up to 44%, was observed in the survival percentage of turbot larvae. There was no correlation between the number of bacteria present in the gut of turbot larvae and the larval survival rate. During both experiments, all replicates followed nearly the same rate of bacterial development in the gut of turbot larvae going from circa 102 CFU larva-1 just before first feeding at day 3 post hatch to 105 CFU larva-1 at day 9 post hatch. In total, 127 bacterial isolates from 12...

International study on <i>Artemia</i> : 33. Promising results in larval rearing of <i>Penaeus stylirostris</i> using a prepared diet as algal substitute and for <i>Artemia</i> enrichment OMA
Léger, P.; Bieber, G.F.; Sorgeloos, P..
The importance of highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) such as 20:5omega3 and 22:6omega3 has been investigated for the larvae of the blue shrimp <i>Penaeus stylirostris</i>. HUFA-rich or HUFA-enriched <i>Artemia</i> nauplii yielded higher production results in the hatchery than HUFA-poor <i>Artemia</i> especially when yeast was used as a substitute for algae during the early larval stages. Best results were obtained when a HUFA-rich formulated diet was used as a supplement to the yeast and as an enrichment for the <i>Artemia</i> nauplii. Differences in production results could be attributed to the HUFA content in living and non-living larval diets.

Experiences on importance of diet for shrimp postlarval quality OMA
Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
This paper gives an overview of own experiences with respect to the impact of dietary conditions on the quality of postlarval penaeid shirmp. Direct nutrient-specific effects are documented for highly unsaturated fatty acid (HUFA), phosphatidyl choline (PC) and ascorbic acid (AA). Specific immunostimulants may also contribute to an improved stress resistance of the shrimp fry. Last, but not least, some emphasis is placed on the role of the microflora during the hatchery rearing, the possible reduction of bacteria in the live food adminstered, and the use of probionts through the diet.

Reproductive performance of <i>Macrobrachium rosenbergii</i> females in captivity OMA
Cavalli, R.O.; Lavens, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
The breeding frequency, fecundity, egg hatchability, larval output and viability of pond-reared, mature <i>Macrobrachium rosenbergii</i> females were individually followed up during 180 d. Sexually mature prawns were maintained under controlled laboratory conditions (28.7 C and 12-h light/d) in a 190-L freshwater recirculation system and fed a formulated diet. Ovarian development, moulting and spawning events were checked daily. At least six consecutive moults were recorded for each of the 18 females. The duration of the intermoult period averaged 27.5 d and was not affected by ovarian development or spawning, but intermoult periods followed by spawning had significantly lower growth rates. From a total of 126 moulting events recorded, egg...

A new device to autonomously feed individualized mantids on extended periods of time Rev. Bras. entomol.
Scherrer,Marcus V.; Aguiar,Alexandre P..
ABSTRACT Mantises can live for many months, are naturally voracious, and feed invariably on live prey. Many species have a propensity for cannibalism and cannot be kept together for most of their life cycle, which makes large-scale rearing typically time-consuming, thus easily becoming prohibitive. This is particularly true for early instars, because they are the most abundant stage of a developmental cohort. Such limitation hinders research on Mantodea which depend on live individuals, such as behavior, physiology, ontogeny, and others. In this work, a simple, low-maintenance “self-service” device is described, which is greatly effective in reducing the time needed for keeping live, individual, small to medium-sized mantises. Trial and error usage and...

Broiler and swine production: animal welfare legislation scenario Scientia Agricola
Silva,Raquel Baracat Tosi Rodrigues da; Nääs,Irenilza de Alencar; Moura,Daniella Jorge de.
Brazil is the world largest meat exporter and one of the most recent demands of the import market is directed towards animal welfare. Codes, norms and legislations used in Brazil are out of date, and in most cases those adopted for both poultry and swine production are based on international standards to meet trade requirements. This research aimed to study and describe an overall scenario of the standards, norms and legislations for animal welfare items applied to broiler and swine production: rearing, handling and transportation. The critical points of these items were identified in accordance to standards and current literature on animal welfare issues, effective on January 2008. The comparison was based on given scores varying from 1-5 (very bad to...
