Klimaændringer er uden tvivl en af de største udfordringer menneskeheden har stået over for. Det skyldes ikke mindst de enorme konsekvenser, som klimaændringerne vil have for verdens økosystemer og for vore levevilkår. I det politiske liv tales ofte om at undgå farlige klimaændringer. Hvad der er farligt er jo en politisk beslutning, hvorimod det er op til forskningen at fremlægge dokumentation for de konsekvenser forskellig grader af klimaændringer vil have. EU har defineret at det drejer sig om at undgå klimaændringer, der overstiger 2 grader i global middeltemperatur over førindustrielt niveau, og denne målsætning er på det seneste tiltrådt af G8 landene. |

Organic agriculture is dependent on fossil fuels, just like conventional agriculture, but this can be reduced by the use of on-farm biomass resources. The energy efficiency and environmental impacts of different alternatives can be assessed by life cycle assessment (LCA), which we have done in this project. Swedish organic milk production can become self-sufficient in energy by using renewable sources available on the farm, with biogas from manure as the main energy source. Thereby greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the production system can be reduced, both by substituting fossil fuels and by reducing methane emissions from manure. The experiments show that composting of GM plant residues greatly increases the rate of degradation of transgenic DNA compared to the rate for plant residues left in the soil. If the persistence of transgenic DNA in the environments is considered as the only risk factor, composting is a 'DNA-safe' method to treat GM plant residues. However, even though transgenic plant DNA was not detected in bacterial isolates in our experiments, we cannot conclude that horizontal gene transfer can not take place. The 300 isolates tested proved to be too low a number to be conclusive. Agroecological symbiosis (AES) enhances productivity in agriculture. A case study of the first AES in Finland indicated that productivity of on the organic crop farm could be increased by producing biogas from green manure leys, fallows, and other locally available biomasses. At the same time, the farm became a net-energy producer instead of being an energy consumer. Bioenergi betragtes som en af de bedste muligheder for på kort sigt at substituere fossile brændsler og reducere udledning af de menneskeskabte drivhusgasser. Det forventes, at landbrugssektoren vil komme til at spille en stadig større rolle for forsyning af samfundets med biomasseressourcer til disse formål. Biobrændstoffer, fremstillet ud fra hele eller dele af diverse landbrugsafgrøder og -biprodukter kan være direkte erstatningsprodukter for transportsektorens nuværende forbrug af fossile brændstoffer. Priserne på konventionelle fossile brændstoffer (f.eks. benzin og dieselolie) er op til tredoblet inden for de seneste 4 år. This project investigates strategic management of nitrogen by integrating crop residue management with biogas production. The approach offers potential for diversified farmer income, as food crops, feedstock for biogas and digestate for nutrient cycling are produced simultaneously. This type of diversification provides multifunctional solutions in organic farming, especially in production without access to animal manure. A taxa de decomposição desses materiais é produto da combinação de fatores intrinsecos, sua composição quimica e bioquímica, e fatores extrínsecos, sendo as condições de temperatura e umidade do local as variáveis mais importantes, constituindo assim em um processo complexo e dinâmico por ser controlado por vários fatores. I de seneste årtier har der været fokus på at reducere jordbrugets forurening med næringsstoffer og syntetiske pesticider. Tabet af specielt kvælstof til vandmiljøet har ført til omfattende iltsvind i de indre farvande samt en forringelse af kvaliteten af grundvand.
