Aphididae (Hemiptera) on ornamental plants in Córdoba (Argentina) Rev. Soc. Entomol. Argent.
Szpeiner,Alfonsina.
In 30 surveys across Cordoba city and surroundings (Argentina) I recorded, from November 2001 to May 2002, a total of 109 ornamental plants infested with aphid colonies. Surveys were conducted in the local botanical garden as well as homestead gardens and nurseries. Seventeen species of aphids were identified, 4 of which are new species in the area, from 47 ornamental plants. In a total of 59 plant/aphid associations, 38 new associations were found. I present the first record of aphids colonizing Cactaceae in Argentina. Most aphid colonies were medium and a high proportion (more than 40%) showed alate individuals. The most frequent aphid species, Aphis gossypii Glover and Aphis craccivora Koch were especially associated with the most frequent damages:...

Richness and diversity of aphids (Homoptera, Aphididae) along an altitudinal gradient in the Serra do Mar, Paraná, Brazil Zoologia
Lazzarotto,Crisleide Maria; Lázzari,Sonia Maria Noemberg.
The lack of bioecological studies on aphids in regions with complex floristic and faunistic structure, such as the Atlantic Tropical Rain Forest, lead to the initiation of this research. The objectives were to determine species richness and diversity of aphids and to investigate the influence of altitude and environmental perturbations on aphid populations. The collections were made with yellow pan traps at 11 sites with altitudes from -10 m to 1000 m above sea level (a.s.l.), in the Serra do Mar, Paraná, Brazil, from December 1993 to December 1994. Richness and diversity of aphids were greatest at 85 m a.s.l. This site was characterized by three distinct floral communities: primary vegetation, secondaiy vegetation in successional stages, and secondary...

Habitat structure and small mammals abundances in one semiarid landscape in the Brazilian Caatinga Zoologia
Freitas,Rodrigo R.; Rocha,Pedro Luís B. da; Simões-Lopes,Paulo César.
Studies conducted under a major project sponsored by the Brazilian Academy of Sciences in the 1970's concluded that the small mammal fauna of the semiarid Caatinga region of Brazil is impoverished and highly restricted to mesic granite outcroppings due to the lack of water conserving physiological capabilities in its species. This work focuses the abundance of small mammals in five typical Caatinga habitats. Indirect gradient analysis shows that three theoretical environmental variables explain most of the variance present in the community abundance matrix. Direct analysis of gradients show that none of these variables is highly correlated to availability of granite outcroppings. Our data also suggest that the abundances in Caatinga are not particularly...

Riqueza de aves da Fazenda Santa Rita, região dos Campos Gerais, Palmeira, Paraná, Brasil Zoologia
Anjos,Luiz dos; Graf,Vinalto.
Two hundred and eighty eight bird species were registered in Santa Rita Farm, east of Paraná State in Brazil (28º18'S,49º48'W), from February 1990 to January 1991. Eighty four species were registered in all 12 months and eighty three were registered once during this period. October was the richest in number of species (220) and July was the poorest (137). The natural landscape of the Santa Rita farm is composed of open field with several patches of araucaria forest (from 10 to 40 ha) and some small areas of marshland. Two hundred and eight species occurred only in one of these habitats: 163 in the forest, 35 in the open field and 10 in the marshland. The others often occurred in both forest and open field; there is a gradient of occurrence between them....

Notes on necrophagous flies (Diptera: Calyptratae) associated to fish carrion in Colombian Amazon Acta Amazonica
Amat,Eduardo.
In recent years, there has been an increasing number of studies on carrion fly communities due to their medical importance and as a consequence of the large number of studies on forensic entomology. Surprisingly few studies have adressed with the asynantropic flies of the Amazon, and none were done in Colombia. A faunistic study of asynantropic flies of the families Calliphoridae, Sarcophagidae, Muscidae and Fannidae in three different landscapes of the Colombian Amazon is presented, trapping effectiveness is assessed, and the first record of Mesembrinella batesi (Aldrich, 1922) and Fannia femoralis (Stein, 1897) from Colombia is reported.

Diversity of bryophytes in priority areas for conservation in the Atlantic forest of northeast Brazil Acta Botanica
Silva,Mércia Patrícia Pereira; Pôrto,Kátia Cavalcanti.
The northeastern Brazilian Atlantic forest is the region with the greatest diversity of bryophytes in the country. However, knowledge about bryophytes is irregularly distributed among Brazilian regions. Therefore, we aimed to contribute to knowledge about bryophytes on a regional scale in the northeastern Atlantic forest, to identify the centers of bryophyte diversity in that region, and to reiterate the importance and identify locations for which new protected areas should be created. We built a database of bryophytes in 23 locations of the region, based on a literature review and new floristic inventories. To identify the locations of greatest relevance to bryophyte conservation, we considered 1) total and endemic species richness, 2) phylogenetic...

Ramos,Geraldo José Peixoto; Santana,Lucineide Maria; Medina,Anderson Matos; Bicudo,Carlos Eduardo de Mattos; Branco,Luis Henrique Zanini; Moura,Carlos Wallace do Nascimento.
ABSTRACT Knowledge of algal and cyanobacterial diversity of phytotelmata remains poorly-known, especially for bromeliads from different vegetation formations. We investigated the microalgae communities of four species of tank bromeliads from different vegetation formations in Bahia State, Northeast Brazil, highlighting the composition, richness and diversity of taxa. Sampling of water stored in bromeliads was carried out quarterly between 2014 and 2016, and abiotic variables and morphometric attributes of bromeliads were measured. A total of 89 taxa of algae and cyanobacteria were recorded for the four bromeliad species studied. The microalgae communities of the phytotelmata varied among vegetation formations, with one tank bromeliad, Alcantarea nahoumii,...

Island effect on diversity, abundance and vegetation structure in the Chocó Region Acta Botanica
Medina,Edier Soto; Vásquez,Ana Isabel; Moreno,Maria Paula; Torres-González,Alba.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of island area and isolation on species richness and abundance, and vegetation structure of Isla Palma by comparing these parameters with those of the continental location, Playa Chucheros. By sampling vegetation at each locality using Gentry transects (10 50x2 m) we found 204 species of plants at Playa Chucheros, and 103 on Isla Palma. Species richness and abundance of woody plants was higher for Playa Chucheros (472 individuals) compared to Isla Palma (349 individuals). Richness estimators indicate that the plant species richness of Playa Chucheros is almost twice as high as that of Isla Palma. Rarefaction curves suggest that Playa Chucheros had a significantly greater richness than Isla Palma....

SIEGLOCH,ANA EMILIA; SURIANO,MARCIA; SPIES,MARCIA; FONSECA-GESSNER,ALAÍDE.
The aim of this study was to test the effect of agricultural and forestry land use on the structure of mayfly assemblages in low-order streams. Twenty-nine headwater streams were investigated in the state of São Paulo. We analyzed 15 streams in pristine areas (mixed tropical rainforest, semideciduous forest and dense tropical rainforest), and 14 streams covered with sugarcane, eucalyptus and pasture. Mayfly richness obtained by rarefaction curves was higher in pristine areas (21 genera), especially in mixed and semideciduous forest when compared to land use (9 genera), where values were particularly low in sugarcane plantation (3 genera). The non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) ordination showed clear difference in mayfly assemblages between land...

Richness and structure of ant assemblies (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in Atlantic forest in southern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
LUTINSKI,JUNIR A.; LUTINSKI,CLADIS J.; GUARDA,CARIN; BUSATO,MARIA A.; GARCIA,FLÁVIO R.M..
ABSTRACT Ant diversity is influenced by the structural complexity of the environment. Ants are thus an ecologically important group due to their potential to serve as indicators of environmental quality. The objective of this study was to evaluate ant diversity in areas with different land use histories and thus, within different stages of regeneration in the Permanent Preservation Area of the Foz do Chapecó Hydroelectric Plant reservoir. Ant assemblies among sample sites were compared using rarefaction analysis, and estimated richness, frequency of occurrence, and relative abundance were calculated. Associations between species and sample sites were evaluated using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). We identified 55 species in total from 24 genera,...

Different slopes of a mountain can determine the structure of ferns and lycophytes communities in a tropical forest of Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
NETTESHEIM,FELIPE C.; DAMASCENO,ELAINE R.; SYLVESTRE,LANA S..
A community of Ferns and Lycophytes was investigated by comparing the occurrence of species on different slopes of a paleoisland in Southeastern Brazil. Our goal was to evaluate the hypothesis that slopes with different geographic orientations determine a differentiation of Atlantic Forest ferns and lycophytes community. We recorded these plants at slopes turned towards the continent and at slopes turned towards the open sea. Analysis consisted of a preliminary assessment on fern beta diversity, a Non Metric Multidimensional Scaling (NMDS) and a Student t-test to confirm if sites sampling units ordination was different at each axis. We further used the Pearson coefficient to relate fern species to the differentiation pattern and again Student's t-test to...
