Historical land-cover/use in different slope and riparian buffer zones in watersheds of the state of São Paulo, Brazil Scientia Agricola
Silva,Alexandre Marco da; Nalon,Marco Aurélio; Kronka,Francisco José do Nascimento; Alvares,Clayton Alcarde; Camargo,Plinio Barbosa de; Martinelli,Luiz Antonio.
Information about the land cover of a region it is a key information for several purposes. This paper aimed to elaborate land-cover maps using digital satellite images obtained in 1997 from seven watersheds (Piracicaba, Moji-Guaçu, Alto Paranapanema, Turvo Aguapeí, Peixe, and São José dos Dourados) located in the State of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. Additionaly, this study evaluated the relationship between land-cover and slopes of the terrain of the seven watersheds. A third objective was to estimate the percentage of riparian vegetation currently remaining along the streams in a 30-meter width buffer zone. Three research questions were posed: i) What is the dominant land-cover of these watersheds? ii) Is the riparian vegetation well preserved in the...

Variações espaciais na assembléia de peixes no Rio Paraíba do Sul (Barra Mansa, Barra do Piraí), Rio de Janeiro, Brasil Zoologia
Araújo,Francisco Gerson; Fichberg,Ilana; Pinto,Benjamin Carvalho Teixeira; Peixoto,Magna Galvão.
The Paraíba do Sul is a major running water system in southeastern Brazil (22º24' -22º26'S; 43º43' -44º16' W), draining one of the most important industrial regions in the country. Because of its location, it has suffered a large amount of alteration due to discharges of urban and industrial effluents with direct influence in the ichthyofauna. The aim of this study is to up-to-date information on fish assemblage structure and its variation in the vicinity of a major industrial effluent outfall at Volta Redonda industrial complex. A standardized fishing sampling program, using seines, casting nets, gill nets and net trays, was carried out from October 1997 to September 1999, at six sites in three zones of the river (upstream, nearby and downstream the...

Effects of the flood pulse on the isotopic composition (δ13C and δ15N) of the particulate organic carbon (POC) in the upper Paraná floodplain Biological Sciences
Fiori, Leandro Fabrício; Sacramento, Patricia Almeida; Corbetta, Daiany de Fátima; Pereira, Lucas Milani; Benedito, Evanilde.
The particulate organic carbon (POC) is an important energy source present in the food chain of detritivorous fish. Considering its importance, this study aimed to investigate the effect of the flood pulse on the composition of the POC in a neotropical floodplain. For this, we analyzed the seasonal variations of the carbon isotopic composition (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) in two different hydrological periods in the years 2000 and 2009. Sampling of potential sources of primary producers, as well as the POC, was held in different subsystems of the floodplain of the upper Paraná river (subsystems of the rivers Parana, Baía and Ivinheima). In 2000, there were significant differences on isotopic signature (δ13C) of the POC, unlike what was seen in 2009, where...

Diversity and evolution of Amazonian birds: implications for conservation and biogeography Anais da ABC (AABC)
RIBAS,CAMILA C.; ALEIXO,ALEXANDRE.
Abstract: Amazonia has been a focus of interest since the early days of biogeography as an intrinsically complex and extremely diverse region. This region comprises an intricate mosaic that includes diverse types of forest formations, flooded environments and open vegetation. Increased knowledge about the distribution of species in Amazonia has led to the recognition of complex biogeographic patterns. The confrontation of these biogeographic patterns with information on the geological and climatic history of the region has generated several hypotheses dedicated to explain the origin of the biological diversity. Genomic information, coupled with knowledge of Earth’s history, especially the evolution of the Amazonian landscape, presents fascinating...

New records of freshwater Algae and Cyanobacteria from mountain streams of Córdoba (Argentina) Boletín de la Sociedad
Daga,Claudia; Soteras,Florencia; Daniele,Graciela M; Dominguez,Laura S.
Constant collection surveys of freshwater Algae and Cyanobacteria in central Argentina streams have revealed new identities. This study reports for the first time six species for Córdoba Province and five for Argentina. Biodiversity description of the streams of central Argentina is crucial for the development of conservation activities. In this study the record of new species for this region and for Argentina highlights the relevance of further research to help improving knowledge of the diversity and ecology in this hydrographic system.

Trophic state and microorganisms community of major sub-basins of the middle Rio Doce basin, southeast Brazil BABT
Petrucio,Mauricio Mello; Medeiros,Adriana Oliveira; Rosa,Carlos Augusto; Barbosa,Francisco Antônio Rodrigues.
Total phosphorus concentration was used to define the trophic state of the main sub-basins of the middle Rio Doce, in Minas Gerais State (southeast Brazil) and physical, chemical, and microbiological variables of water were analyzed during 2000 to 2001. The study evaluated changes in water quality caused by seasonality and human activities. Water temperature, conductivity, pH, total alkalinity, dissolved oxygen, and concentrations of NH4-N, NO2-N, NO3-N, total-N, PO4-P, total-P, DOC, and chlorophyll-a were measured in seven rivers stretches (sampling stations). Total yeasts, faecal and total coliforms, and heterotrophic bacteria were also determined. The studied areas were considered to be under oligotrophic to eutrophic conditions. The variables that...

Bacteria and phytoplankton production rates in eight river stretches of the middle Rio Doce hidrographic basin (southeast Brazil) BABT
Petrucio,Mauricio Mello; Barbosa,Francisco Antônio R.; Thomaz,Sidinei Magela.
Measurements of bacterial secondary production (BSP), together with primary phytoplanktonic production (PPP) were conducted during dry and rainy seasons, in eight rivers of different orders submitted to different degrees of human impacts (different trophic degree). We aimed to determine and compare the importance of BSP and PPP in carbon fixation in these different lotic ecosystems. Our results showed that the Ipanema River was the most modified system by anthropogenic effluents inputs. These inputs altered the trophic degree and BSP rates of these streams and rivers.
