Comparative use patterns of plant resources in rural areas of South Africa and Zimbabwe Phyton
Maroyi,A; Rasethe,MT.
Documentation of use patterns of plants across national boundaries is of relevance in understanding the importance of plant resources to livelihood strategies of different ethnic groups. Plant resources have gained prominence as a natural asset through which families derive food, frewood, income, medicines and timber, enabling particularly poor communities to achieve self-suficiency. The objective of this study was to investigate the trends in plant usage in South Africa and Zimbabwe. An ethnobotanical investigation was conducted between January 2012 and January 2013 in the Limpopo Province, South Africa and the Midlands Province, Zimbabwe. The study used questionnaire surveys and interviews with a total of 143 participants to explore plant use patterns in...

IMPACTS OF CONCENTRATION IN HOG PRODUCTION ON ECONOMIC GROWTH IN RURAL ILLINOIS: AN ECONOMETRIC ANALYSIS AgEcon
Gomez, Miguel I.; Zhang, Liying.
This paper evaluates the impact of increasing concentration of the livestock sector on the economic welfare of rural Illinois. A pooled time-series, cross-sectional model is developed to study the dynamics of structural changes in hog production for the period 1981-1997. The model tests the efficient-market hypothesis on local rural economies. Keywords: hog production, concentration, economic impacts, rural communities

Estimating the public benefits of mitigating damages caused by invasive plant species in a subsistence economy AgEcon
Rai, Rajesh Kumar; Scarborough, Helen.
This paper presents analysis of a choice experiment (CE) designed to estimate willingness-topay (WTP) to mitigate damages caused by invasive plant species (IPS) in a rural community of Nepal. In order to address the cash constraints problem in a subsistence economy, two payment attributes, labor contribution and membership fee, were included in the choice sets. The results reveal that rural farmers have significant WTP for forest management activities, in terms of both cash and labor contributions. The results also suggest that rural farmers value their time in this context at a different rate to the current wage rate.

Coping Strategies Against El Nino: The Case of Selected Communities in Talugtug, Nueva Ecija, Philippines AgEcon
Monsalud, Florentino C.; Montesur, Jaime G.; Abucay, Edwin R..
The occurrence of El Nino causes tremendous havoc to economies. Recognizing this problem, the Philippine government has been introducing measures to mitigate the impact of the El Nino phenomenon. One of the measures to lessen the vulnerability of the farmers on El Nino related risk is the Small Water Impounding Projects (SWIPs). Furthermore, farmers have their own initiatives and coping mechanisms to mitigate the effects of El Nino. This research was undertaken to document the coping mechanisms, which would be useful in policy formulation. This study aims to: a) Determine the impacts of El Nino-related abnormal weather changes on agricultural production and farmers' income; b) Document the existing farming systems, resources, infrastructure, institutions,...

Net Gains from 'Net Purchases? Farmers' Preferences for Online and Local Input Purchases AgEcon
Batte, Marvin T.; Ernst, Stanley C..
E-commerce represents both threats to and opportunities for rural communities. This study addresses one element of the issue: farmers' willingness to substitute online merchants or national farm input stores for local businesses. Results of a conjoint analysis of contingent choice experiments suggest that farmers are willing to purchase from online or national stores outside their communities if compensated with lower prices or greater services. Results also demonstrate that the context of the input purchase, such as time constraints, was very important not only in valuing these services, but, more broadly, in terms of the farmer's loyalty to a local merchant.

Rural Broadband Internet Access Supply and Demand AgEcon
Stenberg, Peter L.; Morehart, Mitchell J..
Internet use has grown rapidly over the last 15 years and so has its integration into the rural economy. Connecting to the Internet via high-speed technology such as DSL lines, cable, satellite, and wireless networks increases bandwidth and makes the Internet much more useful to businesses, households, and governments. Rural households are almost as likely as urban households to use the Internet. Broadband Internet access in rural areas has been less prevalent than in much more densely populated areas of the country. Evidence suggests that the difference may lie in the higher cost or less availability of broadband Internet access in rural areas. The paucity of national geographically-specific data, however, presents a challenge in trying to analyze...

PARTICIPAÇÃO LIBERTADORA, CEBS E COMUNIDADES CAMPONESAS EM MONTES CLAROS MG AgEcon
Lopes, Frederico Antonio Mineiro; Amancio, Robson; Alencar, Edgard.
St. Sebastian s Parish, located in the municipality of Montes Claros, in the State of Minas Gerais, characterizes itself by its planning and by its apostolic pastoral work, directing its efforts towards integrating faith and life. The ´80s and ´90s were marked by intense rural worker participation in the Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs) and by popular education with a view to human, and therefore community, promotion. This case study, of an interpretative nature, sought to verify, by participative observation and by interview transcripts, if the manner of the Jesuits intervention, through the BECs, was educational (with popular appeal) or tutorial (with an authoritarian hallmark). In addition it sought to investigate if there was a relationship between...

Is It a Jungle Out There? Meat Packing, Immigrants, and Rural Communities AgEcon
Artz, Georgeanne M.; Jackson, Rebecca; Orazem, Peter F..
The shift of the U.S. meat packing industry from urban to rural areas has generated controversy regarding potential social and economic costs of meat packing plants on their host communities. This study uses media comments to identify the most prominent controversies regarding meat packing, its largely immigrant workforce, and rural communities. We find that the industry has impacted the demographic composition of rural communities and their schools, but find no evidence that the industry increases per capita government expenditures. Our results suggest rural communities trade off the economic benefits of hosting these large employers against the costs of accommodating needs of new residents.

ECONOMIC IMPACT OF RAILROAD ABANDONMENT: CARRINGTON-TO-TURTLE LAKE RAIL LINE; SUMMARY AgEcon
Honeyman, Joel S.; Bangsund, Dean A.; Leistritz, F. Larry.
The Carrington-to-Turtle Lake rail line serves five agricultural shippers in a four county area in central North Dakota. Service on the line has been affected by recent embargoes, floods, and poor, deteriorating track conditions. The line is a strong candidate for abandonment as efforts to rehabilitate the line have lacked financial support. Prior to this study, a benefit/cost study, which compares benefits and costs of a rail line reconstruction, was performed for the rail line in an attempt to secure financial assistance for rehabilitation. Railroad abandonment impacts rural communities and local economies in a variety of ways. Businesses that use rail for transportation usually experience a change in their shipping options. Instead of sending and/or...

QUANTIFICATION OF VILLAGES' AND RURAL COMMUNITIES' CONDITIONS AgEcon
Nemessalyi, Zsolt; Szabo, Bernadett; Nabradi, Andras.
The presentation deals with the quantification of villages'’ and rural communities’' conditions. Distributing financial sources of rural development among the regions is not an easy task. The authors confirm the fact that the results of different methods used for quantifying conditions may be dissimilar. The methods seem to be effective in Hungary which quantify the economic, ecological and social conditions of communities separately in harmony with the functions of rural development. The authors propose an international research, which use the same method to compare communities in the USA, in Europe and even in the candidate countries of the European Union.

Farm Employment, Immigration, and Poverty: A Structural Analysis AgEcon
Martin, Philip L.; Taylor, J. Edward.
This study tests for structural change in the poverty-farm employment relationship between 1980 and 1990. Econometric findings from a partially simultaneous block triangular regression model estimated with census data reveal a circular relationship between farm employment and immigration that was associated with a significant decrease in the number of people in impoverished U.S. households in 1980. However, in 1990, the farm employment-poverty relationship reversed: an additional farm job was associated with an increase in poverty. Our findings suggest immigration to fill low-skilled farm jobs is transferring poverty from rural Mexico to communities in the United States.

Heritage and patrimony of the peasantry framework to address rural development and its application in Colombia Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Pachón Ariza,Fabio Alberto; Bokelmann,Wolfgang; Ramírez Miranda,César Adrián.
Abstract The theoretical framework “heritage and patrimony of the peasantry” and its suggested operationalization potentially offers an improvement over previous approaches to analyse rural development. The first application of the concept was carried out in Colombia, quantifying rural development indicators in six rural territories. The most critical indicators to define rural development in this context were identified as follows: biodiversity, recycling and communal values. Based on these findings, human patrimony has the lowest level of all the heritages of the Colombian peasantry. Public policies to overcome these matters in the post-conflict era, should be the priority of rural development strategies.
