Bioindicators assess the mangroves ecological state according to the types of pressures but they differ with the ecosystem’s specificities. We investigated benthic meiofauna diversity and structure within the low human-impacted mangroves in French Guiana (South America) in response to sediment variables with various distances to the main city. Contaminant’s concentrations differed among the stations, but they remained below toxicity guidelines. Meiofauna structure (Foraminifera, Kinorhyncha, Nematoda) however varied accordingly. Nematode’s identification brought details on the sediment’s quality. The opportunistic genus Paraethmolaimus (Jensen, 1994) strongly correlated to the higher concentrations of Hg, Pb. Anoxic sediments were marked by organic... |

During the Sanba (Santos basin seismic transect) experiment in 2010–2011, a 380-km-long combined wide-angle and reflection seismic profile has been acquired using 30 ocean-bottom seismometers, a 4.5 km seismic streamer and a 8900 in.3 airgun array. The Sanba 3 profile crosses the southern flank of the Sao Paulo Plateau, the Sao Paulo Ridge and the easternmost Santos Basin in an east–west direction. Its eastern end is located on undisturbed oceanic crust. Tomographic and forward modelling of the wide-angle seismic data reveals that the sedimentary thickness is variable with only 1–2 km on top of the ridge and thickening to 4–5 km in the basin. Crustal thickness at the ridge is about 18 km and the relative layer thickness and velocity gradients indicate a... |

In the present paper three new species of the genus Adelophryne from the coastal Atlantic forest in Brazil are described. The species are separated from the two species formerly known from the Amazon forest by caatinga vegetation and a distance of at least 1600 km. A. pachydactylus from Bahia has a reduced number of phalanges in the fourth finger, and large subdigital pads under fingers and toes. A. baturitensis has distinct subarticular tubercles under the toes and a relatively large size. A. maranguapensis has large discs on fingers and toes and is boldly patterned. During fieldwork in Amapá two specimens of A. gutturosa were collected and based on them additional data are provided and some concepts from the original description are revised. Literature... |

During an expedition with RV Victor Hensen (1994) and the RV Polarstern (1996) Isopoda Sphaeromatidae were collected in and off the eastern entrance of the Beagle Channel. The species found, Caecocassidias patagonica Kussakin, 1967, Cassidinopsis emarginata (Guérin-Méneville, 1843) and Moruloidea darwinii (Cunningham, 1871), were previously all poorly or insufficiently described; therefore a redescription is presented herein. Exosphaeroma gigas (Leach, 1818) was also collected frequently, but it was already redescribed earlier and thus only the localities are presented. Moreover, a new species, Cymodopsis beageli, n.sp., which is most closely allied to Cymodopsis sphyracephalata Hurley & Janssen, 1977, is described from the Beagle Channel. |

According to current generic delimitations, supported by wood anatomy, palynology, and recent molecular phylogenies, Antirhea, traditionally treated as a Pantropical genus, is instead restricted to the Paleotropics. At the same time, the Neotropical species traditionally positioned in Antirhea should be positioned in Stenostomum. Following these definitions, Stenostomum is a genus with most of the species present in the Caribbean Region, and two species present in the Guianas, namely S. acreanum and S. guianensis, distributed throughout the Amazon Basin. In addition, according to these new generic delimitations, two species previously positioned in Guettarda and Antirhea need to be transferred to Chomelia, as C. triflora and C. ulei. |

Females of some South-American Gomphidae are recorded. Anomalophlebia nitida gen. nov. et spec. nov. ( ♀ holotype: Venezuela, State of Bolivar, Los Pijiguasos), Praeviogomphus proprius gen. nov. et spec. nov. ( ♀ holotype: Brazil, State of Rio de Janeiro, Itatiaya), Brasiliogomphus uniseries gen. nov. et spec. nov. ( ♀ holotype: Brazil, State of São Paulo, Lins) and Idiogomphoides emmeli spec. nov. ( ♀ holotype: Brazil, State of Rondônia, Rio Pardo) are described and illustrated. A syntype female of Agriogomphus sylvicola Selys is designated as lectotype. The female of Diaphlebia nexans Calvert and Gomphoides perdita (Förster) are described for the first time while two females pertaining to unknown species of Progomphus and Aphylla are described under... |

The genus Stenocephalum (Vernonieae, Asteraceae) includes six South American species that have cylindrical heads, 4–11 florets by capitula, cymose inflorescences and type ‘C’ pollen. Until now, Stenocephalum monticola has been considered as a synonym of S. apiculatum. However, the analysis of the type material and additional specimens indicate that it is a quite different species, which differs in leaf size, pubescence and capitula arrangement. Stenocephalum monticola has leaves of 9–20 mm long, leaf blades villous at the base and capitula agglomerate at the stems tips, while S. apiculatum presents leaves of 30–60 mm long, leaf blades basally glabrous and heads mostly solitary, arranged in a pseudo-spiciform inflorescence. Consequently, in this paper S.... |

Two new species of the genus Lessingianthus (Vernonieae, Asteraceae) from Brazil and Paraguay are described and illustrated. Lessingianthus cipoensis is characterized by the presence of solitary heads disposed in short branches and ovate to elliptical leaves. It has a certain resemblance to L. vestitus, which has more branched inflorescences, with long branches, and lanceolate to obovate-lanceolate leaves. Lessingianthus paraguariensis is closely related to L. asteriflorus and L. mollissimus, but it can be distinguished by the broadly elliptical leaves and the large size of the outer phyllaries. |

Originally described by Löffler in 1962 as a variety of Mesocyclops longisetus, M. araucanus was found to have autapomorphies of its own to deserve specific rank. For a long time the identification of these two species were mixed up. Here, M. araucanus female is redescribed and the male described for the first time. A comparison is made with M. longisetus, whose male is also described for the first time. Detailed comparison between these two species shows that the following traits on specimens of both sexes can be used to separate the species: length/width ratio of caudal rami, ratio of terminal caudal setae, and length/width ratio of last segment of endopod of leg 4. Additional diagnostic characters for each sex are given. The geographic distributions of... |

Two extant hydrobiid species from the lower Tapajos river of Brazil are redescribed. Potamopyrgus amazonicus Haas, 1949, is assigned to the genus Dyris Conrad, 1871. At least eleven species from Miocene deposits of Western Amazonia are assigned to Dyris, a genus that was previously assumed to be extinct. The apertural features of Sioliella effusa Haas, 1949, are considered indicative of a close relationship to Miocene Amazonian taxa formaly assigned to Eubora Kadolsky, 1980. Sioliella ovata spec. nov., a Miocene species resembling S. effusa is described. The two Tapajos species can be regarded as relicts of a speciose, endemic, Miocene Western Amazonian molluscan fauna. |
