Sustainable production of bioactive alkaloids in Psychotria L. of southern Brazil: propagation and elicitation strategies Acta Botanica
Magedans,Yve Verônica da Silva; Rodrigues-Corrêa,Kelly Cristine da Silva; Costa,Cibele Tesser da; Matsuura,Hélio Nitta; Fett-Neto,Arthur Germano.
ABSTRACT Psychotria is the largest genus in Rubiaceae. South American species of the genus are promising sources of natural products, mostly due to bioactive monoterpene indole alkaloids they accumulate. These alkaloids can have analgesic, antimutagenic, and antioxidant activities in different experimental models, among other pharmacological properties of interest. Propagation of genotypes with relevant pharmaceutical interest is important for obtaining natural products in a sustainable and standardized fashion. Besides the clonal propagation of elite individuals, the alkaloid content of Psychotria spp. can also be increased by applying moderate stressors or stress-signaling molecules. This review explores advances in research on methods for plant...

Invasion and establishment of Ceratium furcoides (Dinophyceae) in an urban lake in Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil Acta Botanica
Silva,Luiza Nicoleite da; Medeiros,Caroline Modena de; Cavalcante,Kaoli Pereira; Cardoso,Luciana de Souza.
ABSTRACT Ceratium furcoides has received attention due its invasive behavior in South America and consequent alterations in local phytoplankton communities. Pedalinhos Lake had been dominated by chlorophytes until 2015, when the first occurrence of this dinoflagellate was detected. In order to investigate the colonization process of this species, we monitored the meteorological variables and phytoplankton abundance of this urban lake on a weekly basis from September 2015 to September 2018. At the beginning of the invasion process (Year 1), a peak density of 10,170 ind.mL-1 was recorded, with a significant decrease to 23 ind.mL-1, indicating an initial, unstable process of adaptation, with notable oscillation and reduction of cyanobacterial blooms. At this...

Morpho-physiological responses of a subtropical strain of Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii (Cyanobacteria) to different light intensities Acta Botanica
Wojciechowski,Juliana; Fernandes,Luciano Felício; Fonseca,Fernanda Vitória Buck.
ABSTRACT The toxigenic cyanobacterium Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii previously restricted to tropical latitudes, has been increasingly reported in temperate lakes in recent decades. The causes of its biogeographical expansion are under investigation, but efficient physiological adaptation to changes in temperature and light regimes are likely to be involved. The present study evaluated the morpho-physiological responses of a strain of C. raciborskii from southern Brazil to nine light intensities, from 9 to 250 µmol photons m-2 s-1. Blooms of this cyanobacterium are regularly recorded in the region. Morpho-physiological responses were measured based on growth rate and trichome length. Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii showed slow growth at low light...

Seabather's eruption: report of fourteen cases Anais da ABC (AABC)
ROSSETTO,ANDRÉ LUIZ; SILVEIRA,FÁBIO LANG DA; MORANDINI,ANDRÉ CARRARA; HADDAD JUNIOR,VIDAL; RESGALLA JUNIOR,CHARRID.
Seabather's eruption is a papulo-pruritic dermatitis caused by the nematocysts of the larvae of the jellyfish Linuche unguiculata retained in the clothing fibers. Previously reported in Brazil, this work describes fourteen cases that occurred in the State of Santa Catarina, in southern Brazil. The new cases observed over a short period of time (the first half of January, 2012), at the height of the summer season, should alert health teams to possible epidemics on the coast of the state of Santa Catarina.

First record of growth rings for 11 native subtropical anuran species of South America Anais da ABC (AABC)
BRUM,AMANDA J.C.; LOEBENS,LUIZA; SANTOS,MAURÍCIO B. DOS; CECHIN,SONIA Z..
Abstract: Skeletochronology is the most accurate method to estimate a population age structure. The methodology is based on the analysis of secondary bone tissue in order to count growth rings. This study aimed to provide initial data, allowing researchers to further work out in the age of individuals and populations, sampling evidence of the presence of growth rings in 11 native species (representing nine families) of a subtropical region of southern Brazil. Four bone samples of each specimen were used to perform the skeletochronological analysis: the penultimate phalanges of the 3rd and 4th fingers, the humerus, and the femur. The presence of growth rings was confirmed in the periosteal layer of the bones of all analyzed species. In comparison with...

Early Devonian (Late Emsian) shark fin remains (Chondrichthyes) from the Paraná Basin, southern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
RICHTER,MARTHA; BOSETTI,ELVIO P.; HORODYSKI,RODRIGO S..
ABSTRACT We report on the pioneering discovery of Devonian fish remains in the Paraná Basin, which represents the southernmost record of fishes from that period in mainland South America. The material comes from an outcrop at the lower portion of the São Domingos Formation, within Sequence C of the Paraná-Apucarana sub-basin in Tibagi, State of Paraná. Marine invertebrates are abundant in the same strata. The dark colored fish remains were collected in situ and represent natural moulds of partially articulated shark fin rays (radials). No elements such as teeth or prismatic cartilage have been preserved with the fins rays. This can be attributed to the dissolution of calcium-phosphatic minerals at the early stages of fossilization due to diagenetic...

Feeding ecology of the Neotropical otter Lontra longicaudis in the Lower Arroio Grande River, southern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Souza,Kleisson S.; Bastazini,Vinicius A.G.; Colares,Elton P..
The present study was based on the analysis of spraints (n = 294) collected between December 2005 and November 2007. The importance of each type of prey was determined by absolute and relative frequency. Niche breadth was also estimated. The results were reported as mean (± SD) of relative frequencies. Fish were the main prey found in spraints (57.8 ± 7.0%). Fish from Callichthyidae family were the main prey, followed by Cichlidae, the species Hoplias malabaricus and the family Characidae. The frequencies of other fish and taxa were lower than 13.9% (absolute frequency) and 5.6% (relative frequency). Despite significant seasonal variations, (P = 0.001), niche breadth values were low in all seasons (0.39 ± 0.11). Therefore, Lontra longicaudis presented a...

Beach ridges, foredunes or transgressive dunefields? Definitions and an examination of the Torres to Tramandaí barrier system, Southern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Hesp,Patrick A.; Dillenburg,Sergio R.; Barboza,Eduardo G.; Tomazelli,Luiz J.; Ayup-Zouain,Ricardo N.; Esteves,Luciana S.; Gruber,Nelson L.S.; Toldo-Jr.,Elirio E.; Tabajara,Luiz L.C. de A.; Clerot,Luiz C.P..
Many prograded barriers and some dunefields in theworld have been termed 'beach ridge' plains, but the actual genesis of the 'ridges' is often unknown. Use of the terms, berms, beach ridges and foredunes is also confusing in the literature because their definitions are highly variable and are commonly used interchangeably. Thus, the formation and definition of sand berms, beach ridges and foredunes is briefly reviewed. Beach ridges are re-defined as entirely wave formed deposits which are most commonly formed during high wave conditions and/or elevated water levels (e.g. storm surges). Foredunes are formed by aeolian sand deposition in vegetation on the backshore. Some dunefields in Brazil have been called beach ridge plains when they are, in fact,...

Recurring extensional and strike-slip tectonics after the Neoproterozoic collisional events in the southern Mantiqueira province Anais da ABC (AABC)
Almeida,Renato P.; Santos,Maurício G. M.; Fragoso-Cesar,Antonio R.S.; Janikian,Liliane; Fambrini,Gelson L..
In Eastern South America, a series of fault-bounded sedimentary basins that crop out from Southern Uruguay to Southeastern Brazil were formed after the main collisional deformation of the Brasiliano Orogeny and record the tectonic events that affected the region from the Middle Ediacaran onwards. We address the problem of discerning the basin-forming tectonics from the later deformational events through paleostress analysis of more than 600 fault-slip data, mainly from the Camaquã Basin (Southern Brazil), sorted by stratigraphic level and cross-cutting relationships of superposed striations, and integrated with available stratigraphic and geochronological data. Our results show that the Camaquã Basin was formed by at least two distinct extensional events,...

On the fossil Remains of Panochthus Burmeister, 1866 (Xenarthra, Cingulata, Glyptodontidae) from the Pleistocene of southern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
Ferreira,José D.; Zamorano,Martín; Ribeiro,Ana Maria.
The genus Panochthus represents the last lineage of "Panochthini" recorded in the Pleistocene. This genus has a wide latitudinal distribution in South America, and in Brazil it occurs in the southern and northeastern regions. In this paper we describe new material (isolated osteoderms and caudal tube fragments) assigned to Panochthus from the state of Rio Grande do Sul (southern Brazil) and discuss some taxonomic issues related to Panochthus tuberculatus and Panochthus greslebini based on this material . The occurrence of P. greslebini is the first for outside the Brazilian Intertropical Region. In addition, we describe new diagnostic features to differentiate the osteoderms of P. greslebini and P. tuberculatus. Unfortunately, it was not possible to...

Mollusc assemblage in an urban bay nearby a marine extractive reserve, Florianópolis - SC, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Gandara-Martins,Ana Luiza; Almeida,Tito Cesar Marques de.
have described the spatio-temporal variation of mollusc assemblage in a coastal urban bay near a Marine Extractive Reserve (RESEX), where several human activities are performed. Uni and multivariate analyses were conducted considering spatial (six sampling stations) and temporal scale (30 surveys from 2002 to 2008) and two associations were recognized. We identified 48 species from 28 families belonging to four classes: Bivalvia, Gastropoda, Polyplacophora, and Scaphopoda. The Sand Tidal Flat association had a contribution of more than 90% of Anomalocardia brasiliana (Gmelin, 1791) as well as a higher diversity and similarity among surveys. The Mud Bottom association had a lower similarity among surveys due to the low abundance of species. The feeding...

Melosira (Diatomeae) taxa from the Iguaçu River in southern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Nardelli,Margaret Seghetto; Tremarin,Priscila Izabel; Ludwig,Thelma Alvim Veiga; Bueno,Norma Catarina.
Abstract The study of the genus Melosira in plankton samples from the lower Iguaçu River revealed the presence of four taxa: Melosira undulata (Ehrenberg) Kützing var. undulata, M. undulata var. normanni Arnott, M. varians C. Agardh and M. muscigena Iwahashi. We present illustrations of the frustules using light microscopy (LM), descriptions, and comments about the morphology of the four taxa. The analysis of Melosira muscigena under scanning electron microscopy revealed unprecedented details of the ultrastructure, such as the shape and distribution of the rimoportulae at the valve mantle. This is the first record of Melosira undulata var. undulata and the second of M. muscigena in Brazil.

Evaluation of trace metals (cadmium, chromium, copper and zinc) in tissues of a commercially important fish (Leporinus obtusidens) from Guaíba Lake, Southern Brazil BABT
Costa,Silene de Carvalho; Hartz,Sandra Maria.
Concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu and Zn were determined in liver and muscle of Leporinus obtusidens. During 2003, the fishes (N = 54) were sampled from three sites along Guaíba Lake (north, central and south zones). The hypotheses tested assumed that there were differences in the location and date as to levels of contamination, association between the trace metal content in the fishes and size, and that the sex influenced metal accumulation. Possible risks of contaminated fish consumption to human health were also evaluated. The level of mean concentration (µg/g) of metals in tissues was higher in liver than muscle: [Cd] = 2.32♂; [Cr] = 0.08♀; [Cu] = 30.82♀ and [Zn] = 97.77♀. The results showed differences between the local and date sampling for all metals...

Agostini,Fabiana; Santos,Ana Cristina Atti dos; Rossato,Marcelo; Pansera,Márcia Regina; Santos,Paula Luciana dos; Serafini,Luciana Atti; Molon,Rosângela; Moyna,Patrick.
The Lamiaceae family has been described to be rich in essential oil. The aim of the present work was to identify the native species of Rio Grande do Sul with potential use as the aromatic plants. Seven species of the family were collected in the different localities of the state. The essential oils were obtained by 1h hydrodistillation in a Clevenger apparatus. The constituents were identified by comparing their GC Kovats retention indices (RI), determined with reference to a homologous series of n-alkanes and by comparing their mass spectral fragmentation patterns with literature data. Cunila incisa and Mentha aquatica resulted in the higher esssential oil yields (1.94% v/w and 0.93% v/w, respectively. The composition of M. aquatica was 80% methone, with...
