Adaptation strategies and performances of three producer groups during times of change: lessons learned from the application of the Conditions-Strategies-Performances (CSP) concept in three case studies Organic Eprints
Münchhausen, von, Susanne; Knickel, Karlheinz; Lasner, Tobias; Milestad, Rebecka.
In the analysis, we will - identify the most significant changes over time in relevant market, regulatory, institutional and territorial conditions, - assess the social, economic and other resources available among different groups of primary producers, - relate conditions and resources to the (adaptation) strategies pursued (e.g. regarding the management of the chain and risks), and - explore the (potential) impacts of the resulting (or expected) changes on social, economic and environmental performances. The analysis aims at capturing the interrelationships between external and internal conditions, (adaptation) strategies and (sustainability) performance. A first important step in the analysis is to express conditions, strategies and...

Quantification of root fungi using signature fatty acids Organic Eprints
Ravnskov, Sabine; Jensen, Birgit; Nielsen, Steen Lykke; Larsen, John.
Both deleterious (pathogenic) and beneficial (mycorrhizal) fungi inhabit plant roots with strong impact on plant growth and health. Various methods have been used to quantify these fungi, such as indirect measurements of plant parameters, disease index, staining techniques and serological/genetic/biochemical markers. The objective of this work is to evaluate the possibility of using signature fatty acids to quantify root-inhabiting fungi in planta and in soil. Different fatty acid-based methods can be used to quantify fungi. Phospholid fatty acids (PLFA) can be used for biomass estimation and neutral lipid fatty acids (NLFA) for estimation of fungal energy reserves and the NLFA/PLFA ratio can give information on the physiological status of the fungus. It...

Crosstalk between Innate Immunity and Circadian Rhythm: Do fish immune defences have a sense of time? Organic Eprints
Lazado, Carlo Cabacang; Lund, Ivar; Skov, Peter V.; Jokumsen, Alfred; Gesto, Manuel; Nguyen, Huy Quang; Pedersen, Per Bovbjerg.
Circadian rhythms established by the endogenous clocks enable organisms to anticipate periodic and cyclic changes in their environment. This internal time-keeping system is highly conserved amongst animals and provides them with adaptive advantages as biological processes can be scheduled to occur at the most crucial times of the day. Circadian rhythm is emerging as an important regulator of immune functions. However, there is a paucity of information on the influence of this biological phenomenon in the immune mechanisms of teleost fish. A series of studies was conducted to investigate the circadian rhythms of systemic and mucosal innate immunity using model (i.e., zebrafish, Danio rerio) and non-model (i.e., permit, Trachinotus falcatus; rainbow trout,...

Interpreting soil organic matter characteristics in organic farming systems Organic Eprints
Wander, Michelle M.; Marriott, Emily E.; Wang, Yun.
Soil organic matter (SOM) fraction characteristics need to be developed as indicies that can be related to specific soil functions. The general effects of organic management on prominsing indicies of SOM status (POM and a rapid measure of base hydrolyzable N) were determined by comparing the characteristics of organic and conventionally managed soils obtained from nine long-term trials in North America. In addition, a more detailed study was conducted of POM and of hydrolyzable N fractions (including amino-acids, amino sugars) at a site where use of organic practices failed to increase SOM. In the multi-site comparrison, legume- and manure-based organic systems performed equally well in their ability to increase the quantity of SOM as well as enrich the...

Zwischenergebnisse im Projekt Ökologische Bodenbewirtschaftung in Wörrstadt-Rommersheim (Rheinhessen, Rheinland-Pfalz) [Soil cultivation and soil health - first results of the project "ecological soil management" (POEB) in Woerrstadt-Rommersheim (Rhineland-Palatinate/Germany)] Organic Eprints

Wilbois, Klaus-Peter; Schwab, Andreas; Fischer, Holger; Bachinger, Johann; Palme, Stefan; Peters, Heiner; Dongus, Sara.

Life Cycle Assessment of Conventional and Organic Farming in the DOC trial Organic Eprints
Nemecek, Thomas; Dubois, David; Gunst, Lucie; Gaillard, Gérard.
The environmental impacts of the conventional and organic farming systems practised in the DOC trial (organic-dynamic, organic and conventional farming) have been assessed by the SALCA life cycle assessment method. Both organic farming systems were more favourable for the environment in all investigated impacts per area unit. When analysed per product unit, clear advantages of organic farming were found for ecotoxicity and the use of mineral resources, while energy use and eutrophication were similar to conventional farming. Reducing fertilisation by 50% led to lower or equal environmental impacts for all systems, depending on the impact category and the functional unit. The analysis of single crops revealed large differences that are partly...

Zum biologisch-dynamischen Forschungsansatz – Nur philosophisches Beiwerk oder Erkenntnisbedingung einer Wissenschaft vom Leben? Organic Eprints
Hagel, Ingo.

Monitoring the Conversion to Organic Farming Organic Eprints
Freyer, Bernhard; Surboeck, Andreas; Friedel, Juergen K.; Heinzinger, Markus; Gollner, Manfred.
A long term field monitoring concerning the development of Organic Farming is performed at the bio-farm “Rutzendorf “ of the BVW GmbH in the Marchfeld region east of Vienna. It is an interdisciplinary project of eleven research institutes, which started in 2003. The aims of the project are: examination of changes concerning soil and plant parameters accompanying the conversion to organic farming; investigation of the effects of different organic fertilisation systems (green manure, communal green forage compost, farmyard manure) on soil properties and on crop performances; analysis of existing biotopes (hedges and field stripes) on the farm, and planning and selective realization of new biotopes with the aim of enhancing the biodiversity of the area,...

Origin and composition of Dissolved Organic C and N from grass-clover mixtures Organic Eprints
Rasmussen, Jim; Høgh-Jensen, Henning.
The C and N dynamics in perennial grass-clover mixtures are not fully understood although such mixtures dominate temperate grassland. The co-existence of clover and grass involves both competition for and transfer of nutrients between the species. The nutrients may originate from leaky root systems, from a rapid turnover of the fine root systems, or from degradation of more stabile organic material. The aim of the study is - to determine the origin of DOC and DON in grass-clover mixtures - to determine the composition of DOC and DON from the species - to investigate the transfer of C and N between grass and clover Method: In a third year grass-clover ley at the KVL research fields, mezotrons were installed to depths of 20, 40 and 60 cm in...

Restricting the nonlinearity parameter in soil greenhouse gas flux calculation for more reliable flux estimates Organic Eprints
Hüppi, Roman; Felber, Raphael; Krauss, Maike; Six, Johan; Leifeld, Jens; Fuß, Roland.
The static chamber approach is often used for greenhouse gas (GHG) flux measurements, whereby the flux is deduced from the increase of species concentration after closing the chamber. Since this increase changes diffusion gradients between chamber air and soil air, a nonlinear increase is expected. Lateral gas flow and leakages also contribute to non linearity. Several models have been suggested to account for this non linearity, the most recent being the Hutchinson±Mosier regression model (HMR). However, the practical application of these models is challenging because the researcher needs to decide for each flux whether a nonlinear fit is appropriate or exaggerates flux estimates due to measurement artifacts. In the latter case, a flux estimate from the...
