Impact of agro-industrial activities on the water quality of River Nyando, Lake Victoria Basin, Kenya OceanDocs
Raburu, P. O.; Okeyo-Owuor, J.B..
The impact of agro-industrial activities on the water quality within River Nyando, Lake Victoria Basin (Kenya) was studied at different hierarchical levels between August 1997 and June 1999. Triplicate water samples were collected on a monthly basis from various stations ranging from the source to the mouth of the river and analyzed for selected physical and chemical water quality parameters using standard analytical methods. Statistical analysis was performed using MINITAB and STATISTICA computer packages. Agricultural land use was found to be the major factor contributing to changes in water quality. Salinity and pH varied at river basin scale, turbidity, TDS and conductivity at catchment scale, while DO, alkalinity and pH at subcatchment and river reach...

Applying a non-parametric bootstrap technique to assess the accuracy of biomass estimates of argentine anchovy (Engraulis anchoita) northern stock (34º S-41º S) with the Daily Egg Production Method. 1993-2008 period OceanDocs
Pájaro, M.; Hansen, J.E.; Leonarduzzi, E..
Engraulis anchoita northern stock reproductive biomass (SSB) during the 1993-2008 period was estimated applying the Daily Egg Production Method (DEPM) and accuracy of estimates assessed using a bootstrap technique (SW Atlantic Ocean, Argentine Sea). The basic data were collected in different research surveys carried out in late Spring, at the peak of the spawning season. The aim of this work was to build reliable confidence intervals around the estimates of the mean reproductive biomass applying a non-parametric bootstrap method. Resampling methods are becoming increasingly popular as statistical tools as they are robust and do not require the assumption of any particular distribution of the basic data. This is especially relevant when assessing the DEPM...

Critical values of nitrogen indices in tomato plants grown in soil and nutrient solution determined by different statistical procedures PAB
Fontes,Paulo Cezar Rezende; Ronchi,Cláudio Pagotto.
The objective of this study was to establish critical values of the N indices, namely soil-plant analysis development (SPAD), petiole sap N-NO3 and organic N in the tomato leaf adjacent to the first cluster (LAC), under soil and nutrient solution conditions, determined by different statistical approaches. Two experiments were conducted in randomized complete block design with four repli-cations. Tomato plants were grown in soil, in 3 L pot, with five N rates (0, 100, 200, 400 and 800 mg kg-1) and in solution at N rates of 0, 4, 8, 12 and 16 mmol L-1. Experiments in nutrient solution and soil were finished at thirty seven and forty two days after transplanting, respectively. At those times, SPAD index and petiole sap N-NO3 were evaluated in the LAC. Then,...

STATISTICAL COMPARATIVE PETIOL ANATOMY OF Salvia SP. Planta Daninha
ÖZDEMIR,A.; ÖZDEMIR,A.Y.; YETISEN,K..
ABSTRACT In this study, petiol anatomy of 17 Salvia sp. taxa were compared statistically. In all the studied taxa, some differences were found in the petiole shape, number of vascular bundles and the presence of chlorenchyma. Anatomical variations in 17 Salvia taxa have been investigated by means of numerical methods (Analysis of variance and Pearson correlation). By the analysis of the investigated taxa from 17 leaf anatomy related characters, it has been determined that epidermis width and trachea diameter are the best character pairs which represent the variations in them. It has been also found that the results from numerical analysis of the leaf anatomy characters can provide additional evidences that correspond to the anatomy for the recognition of...

A comparative analysis of the technical efficiency of rain-fed and smallholder irrigation in Ethiopia AgEcon
Makambe, Godswill; Namara, Regassa E.; Hagos, Fitsum; Awulachew, Seleshi Bekele; Ayana, Mekonnen; Bossio, Deborah A..
Agriculture is the most significant contributor to Ethiopia’s economy. Most of the agricultural production is under rainfed conditions and thus extremely sensitive to rainfall variability. Irrigation development, including smallholder irrigation, is used by the Ethiopian Government to attempt to mitigate the effects of rainfall variability. In this study, we look at smallholder irrigation - modern and traditional irrigation systems. A detailed description of the cropping patterns is given. The stochastic frontier production function approach is used to estimate technical inefficiency, and constraints to production are analyzed. Since the traditional system is found to be efficient but on a lower production frontier, the study shows that significant gains...

Patterns of Pass-through of Commodity Price Shocks to Retail Prices AgEcon
Berck, Peter; Leibtag, Ephraim S.; Villas-Boas, Sofia Berto; Solis, Alex.
Commodity prices have been rising at unprecedented rates over the last two years. The primary objective of this paper is to assess if and how firms pass through upstream cost increases to final good prices. First, we investigate what happens to the shelf prices (the regular prices) of goods that contain significant amounts of a commodity whose price has changed. The objective is to document patterns of price rigidity depending on the share of the commodity in the final good that is sold to consumers. For example, given an abnormal commodity price change in wheat, what happens to the shelf regular price of bread, wheat cereals, and other goods that contain wheat? Commodity pass-through patterns for ready to eat cereal (smallest share of commodity in...

A Comparison Of Characteristics Of Forest and Farm Cooperative Members AgEcon
Berlin, Christina; Erikson, Ljusk Ola.
The forest owner cooperatives in Sweden were established almost a century ago with the aim to improve the private forest owners’ bargaining situation and improve silviculture (the study, cultivation, and management of forest trees). The characteristics of today’s private forest owners and forest industry are changing, something which should encourage the forest owner cooperatives to consider adaptations of their organizations. The aims of this paper are, first, to describe characteristics of forest owner cooperative members and second, to probe the applicability of farm cooperative research in this venture. The statements that are tested are based on characteristics established in farm cooperative research and refer to (i) a negative relation between...

An Evaluation of the Use of Statistical Procedures in Soil Science Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Tavares,Laene de Fátima; Carvalho,André Mundstock Xavier de; Machado,Lucas Gonçalves.
ABSTRACT Experimental statistical procedures used in almost all scientific papers are fundamental for clearer interpretation of the results of experiments conducted in agrarian sciences. However, incorrect use of these procedures can lead the researcher to incorrect or incomplete conclusions. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the characteristics of the experiments and quality of the use of statistical procedures in soil science in order to promote better use of statistical procedures. For that purpose, 200 articles, published between 2010 and 2014, involving only experimentation and studies by sampling in the soil areas of fertility, chemistry, physics, biology, use and management were randomly selected. A questionnaire containing 28...

Environmental variables influencing the expression of morphological characteristics in clones of the forage cactus Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Barbosa,Marcela Lúcia; Silva,Thieres George Freire da; Zolnier,Sérgio; Silva,Sérvulo Mercier Siqueira e; Ferreira,Williams Pinto Marques.
ABSTRACT The environmental factors that affect the morphological characteristics of different genera of cacti are little known. The aim of this study therefore was to analyse the contribution of environmental variables to growth in cladodes and plant of forage cactus clones of the genera Nopalea and Opuntia. The data used in this study were obtained from an experiment conducted in Serra Talhada, Pernambuco, Brazil, between 2012 and 2013, where the clones 'IPA Sertânia' (Nopalea), 'Miúda' (Nopalea) and 'Orelha de Elefante Mexicana' (Opuntia) were submitted to different irrigation depths (2.5, 5.0 and 7.5 mm) and fixed irrigation intervals (7, 14 and 28 days). Morphological characteristics of the cladodes and plants and weather variables were obtained over...

Analyzing one-way experiments: a piece of cake of a pain in the neck? Scientia Agricola
Kozak,Marcin.
Statistics may be intricate. In practical data analysis many researchers stick to the most common methods, not even trying to find out whether these methods are appropriate for their data and whether other methods might be more useful. In this paper I attempt to show that when analyzing even simple one-way factorial experiments, a lot of issues need to be considered. A classical method to analyze such data is the analysis of variance, quite likely the most often used statistical method in agricultural, biological, ecological and environmental studies. I suspect this is why this method is quite often applied inappropriately: since the method is that common, it does not require too much consideration-this is how some may think. An incorrect analysis may...

Statistics is the main science by which researchers validate the results of scientific work, and the choice of an inadequate statistical method may lead to conclusions that are considered questionable by reviewers. This study had the objective of describing the characteristics of the statistical methods used in the papers published in Acta Scientiarum. Agronomy from 1998 to 2016 as part of a a critical analysis of the journal to pinpoint possible failures in the application of these methods. All scientific articles (n = 1,237) published in the journal were surveyed, of which 54.1% addressed areas of crop production. The mean comparison methods were the most commonly used (75.5%) and, consequently, they represented the highest proportion of errors (60.8%)...

Near accidents with agricultural vehicles, machinery and equipment in Austria in the year 2013 CIGR Journal
Kogler, Robert.
Near accidents are in the lowest stage of the accident pyramid. A near accident is defined as an unplanned event, which includes a potential accident risk, but does not bring any injury or property damage with it. The consideration of near accident plays a very significant role in accident prevention. Near accident research provides an acceptable tool to determine safety deficiencies, potential risks and hidden dangers in various work areas early enough to avoid actual accidents. The aim of the study was to identify safety weaknesses of agricultural and forestry vehicles, machinery and equipment which almost led to an accident with workers in agriculture and forestry in Austria. Also to detect weaknesses and deficits in the design to derive improvements in...
