Trends in the Irish Beef Market During the 1990s - Identification and Analysis of Change Drivers AgEcon
O'Reilly, Seamus; McCarthy, Mary.
This paper provides a brief review of the Irish beef market during the 1990s. It sets out to identify the key factors influencing beef consumption during this period and reviews industry/ government response to consumer needs. A number of factors influencing beef consumption are identified, including: price, safety, eating quality and health. In addition to price competitiveness, industry/government response has focused on safety and quality systems. Safety emerged as an important factor during the 1990s and various traceability, quality assurance schemes and supply chain partnerships were established to reassure the consumer. By the end of the decade such systems are a pre-requisite to market entry and increasingly the focus is on using these systems to...

Linking Small Scale Farmers in China with the International Markets: A Case of Apple Export Chains AgEcon
Zhang, Xiaoyong; Qiu, Huanguang; Huang, Zhurong.
This study describes how governance mechanisms were formed that link small-scale apple farmers in China with export markets. These institutional innovations have improved the efficiency of price transmission and generated higher profit margins for various actors in the supply chain, in particular for small-scale farmers. Chinese apple exports are highly coordinated through ongoing long term loyal network relationships and vertical integration. Relevant policy implications and further challenges are discussed in the conclusion.

Where has all the cream gone: How sustainable is the English dairy supply chain? AgEcon
Glover, Jane.
The sustainability of the dairy supply chain is a widely debated topic in the industry. The purpose of this paper is to explore farmer behaviour in response to diminishing returns and investigates the possible long-term implications of low returns, identified by farming families. The paper argues that, sustained declines in margins, coupled with other structural changes in the industry, will eventually lead to an exodus of small family farms. A qualitative methodology ensures in-depth data were collected over a five year period. The results indicate that farmers and their families are concerned over the reduced margins for their produce, with many smaller farms forced to subsidies the business with alternative sources of income. Farmers also raise concerns...

A NEW STRUCTURE FOR AGRICULTURE: A REVOLUTION FOR RURAL AMERICA AgEcon
Drabenstott, Mark.
U.S. agriculture is undergoing a tidal wave of change in its structure. A shift to supply chains and away from commodities and commodity markets is the hallmark of this new wave. The new agriculture of the 21st century will bring with it a new geography that may be nothing short of a revolution for rural America. Supply chains will tend to concentrate activity geographically and change the local economic dynamic where they do locate. Finally, the tide of change in agriculture's structure means a whole new slate of policy issues. Concentration, market access, and the delivery mechanism for government support all become bigger concerns with supply chains. But perhaps the biggest policy challenge looming ahead is addressing rural America's economic...

Agri-food supply chains and sustainability-related issues: evidence from across the Scottish agri-food economy AgEcon
Leat, Philip M.K.; Lamprinopoulou-Kranis, Chrysa; Revoredo-Giha, Cesar; Kupiec-Teahan, Beata.
This paper examines the influence of agri-food supply chains on the sustainability-related activities and decisions of Scottish farmers, as well as the treatment of sustainability issues by food processors and retailers themselves. It is based on 8 whole chain case studies covering some of Scotland‘s major agricultural products. The cases identify differing levels of understanding and activities related to sustainability, but widespread acknowledgement that sustainability involves the development of chains within which all parties can achieve acceptable profits. Indeed, collaborative supply chains, which seek improved economic performance, frequently assist environmental and social sustainability. The main drivers of sustainability are found to be the cost...

The Rise of Supermarkets and Their Development Implications: International Experience Relevant for India AgEcon
Reardon, Thomas; Gulati, Ashok.
The Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER) was invited by the Indian Ministry of Commerce and Industry to conduct a study titled “The Impact of Organized Retailing on the Unorganized Retail Sector.” Because organized retail in India is still in its infancy, it was deemed critical to look at the experience of other countries, especially developing ones. Thus, ICRIER sought the assistance of Dr. Thomas Reardon and Dr. Ashok Gulati, co-directors of Markets in Asia, a joint program of the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and Michigan State University. ICRIER asked Reardon and Gulati to help research and report on the international experiences in the growth and expansion of modern retailing in developed and...

Supply Chain Competences: The Case of the Traditional Food Sector in the EU AgEcon
Molnar, Adrienn; Kuehne, Bianca; Sebok, Andras; Gellynck, Xavier.
Since over the last twenty years the reduction of trade barriers, the increasing liberalisation, the advancement in ICT have determined a growth in the horizontal and vertical competition among firms in the chain. Therefore, today more than ever they are pressured to develop appropriate strategies in order to become more competitive (Montgomery and Porter, 1993; Grant, 1996; Porter, 1996). However, firms nowadays no longer compete as independent entities, but as chains (Fearne, 1998; Van der Vorst et al., 1998; Sahay, 2003; Green and Inman, 2005; Green et al., 2006; Hult et al., 2007; Ketchen and Hult, 2007; Sezen, 2008) and consequently, the dynamic and mutually dependent character of relations in these chains cause a challenge for these firms towards the...

Retailer-led Regulation of Food Safety : Back to Spot Markets? AgEcon
Giraud-Heraud, Eric; Hammoudi, Abdelhakim; Soler, Louis-Georges.
At the end of the 1990s European retailers had significantly contributed to restructuring fresh agricultural product food chains (meat, fruit and vegetables), and had turned away from spot markets in order to create their own supply chains, based on private technical requirements and verification systems usually managed from within the firm. However, over the last few years a second type of system has appeared, as the range of standards adopted by retailers has been broadened to include generic standards common to several retailers. A telling example of this new approach is provided by the EUREPGAP protocol. In this paper we propose a theoretical analysis of this new procedure and its possible impacts.

Trust in the US‐EU Fruit and Vegetable Chain: Do US Exporters Understand EU Importers? AgEcon
Ameseder, Christoph; House, Lisa; Haas, Rainer; Meixner, Oliver; Fritz, Melanie; Dahl, Ellie; Hofstede, Gert Jan.
Research on organizational and inter‐organizational trust has become an important field in management and marketing literature, as it is perceived as a pivotal aspect of business transactions. However, clarifications are still needed on the issue of whom we trust; is the person whom we are trading with trusted, or the organization, or just the product‐quality? Not only has this question not been answered within this field of research, neither have cultural differences have been described to any great extent. Additionally, if the perceived factors important to establish trusting relationships may or may not be the same on the buyers and the sellers side in international business transaction in food chains. The primary objective of this research study...

REPUTATIONS, MARKET STRUCTURE, AND THE CHOICE OF QUALITY ASSURANCE SYSTEMS IN THE FOOD INDUSTRY AgEcon
Carriquiry, Miguel A.; Babcock, Bruce A..
Participants in a supply chain of agricultural value-added products face significant challenges. Many of the costly distinctive traits are difficult (if not impossible) to observe even after consumption. A complicating factor, addressed here, is that in some circumstances delivered quality can only be imperfectly learned and/or affected stochastically by producers. In order for markets for these goods to arise, firms touting the quality of the product need to be trusted. In response to these challenges, new (and diverse) quality assurance systems (QASs) that facilitate the acquisition and flow of information about agricultural and food products are being put in place. A repeated-purchases model is developed to explore the fundamental economic factors that...

Meat Processors Purchasing and Sale Practices: Lessons Learned from the GIPSA Livestock and Meat Marketing Study AgEcon
Lawrence, John D.; Muth, Mary K.; Taylor, Justin; Koontz, Stephen R..
The meat value chain is a complex organization with multiple participants performing numerous value added functions. Perhaps the most complex and least well understood segment is that downstream from the packer, e.g., the processor, wholesaler, exporter, retailer and food service (or restaurant) operator. One portion of the Livestock and Meat Marketing Study provided an overview of marketing and pricing methods used in this sector and, in particular, the results of analyses of the relationship between use of alternative marketing arrangements (AMAs) and the distribution and sales of meat products downstream from the packer. The analyses include both beef and pork products, are descriptive and focus on the relationships among industry articipants beyond...

Trader-supplier Coordination in the Agrifood Supply Chains in Northern Ethiopia AgEcon
Alemu, Abebe Ejigu; Mathijs, Erik; Maertens, Miet; Deckers, Jozef A.; Gebregziabher, Kidanemariam; Baur, Hans; Gebrehiwot, Kindeya.
There exists a huge agrifood potential in Ethiopia. However, the country's agrifood supply chains are underdeveloped to deliver quality supply to traders and supplement household livelihoods from the sector. The key factors that determine the proper functioning of supplier-trader chains were not rigorously investigated, at least in the case study area. This paper aims at examining the key determinants in choosing vertical coordination for agrifood products in Tigray, Northern Ethiopia. Structured questionnaires were administered to 247 traders in 10 towns in Tigray. Probit model was employed to identify the key determinants of vertical coordination. Model results show that market information, product characteristics, firm characteristics, and product...

Supply Chain Management of Fresh Produce: Melons in Western China AgEcon
Zhang, Yanrong; Wei, Sherrie; Qiao, Zhixia.
The western part of China has a long history and reputation of growing a variety of quality melons largely due to its semi arid agronomic environment. In the past decade, the industry suffered from the interrelated issues of unreliable quality and intense price competition. Even though both the government and supply chain stakeholders are aware of the problems, there is a need to look at the issues from a supply chain perspective and new ways of managing the melon supply chains are to be explored. This paper analysed the melon supply chain in western China in the areas of logistical efficiency and supply chain relationship management. The results of the analysis offer insights for improving the efficiency of the melon supply chain and the competitiveness...
