EFFECTS OF SALINE WATER ON TOMATO UNDER SUBSURFACE DRIP IRRIGATION: NUTRITIONAL AND FOLIAR ASPECTS J. Soil Sci. Plant Nutr.
Kahlaoui,B; Hachicha,M; Rejeb,S; Rejeb,M.N; Hanchi,B; Misle,E.
A field experiment on the effects of drip irrigation (DI) and subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) with saline water (6.57 dS m-1) on three tomato cultivars (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill., cvs. Rio Tinto, Rio Grande and Nemador) was carried out with the purpose to quantify physiological responses. The aim was to improve irrigation water management under saline conditions of Tunisia. The trial was established in a silt-clayey soil with three regimes of irrigation: 100 %, 85 % and 70 % of crop water requirement. Results evidenced a significant difference between the two irrigation systems for the three cultivars. Growth parameters such as leaf area, chlorophyll content and mineral composition of leaves, petioles, stems and roots were affected significantly by...

Oviposition preference of Neoleucinodes elegantalis (Guenée) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) and rates of parasitism by Trichogramma pretiosum Riley (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) on Lycopersicon esculentum in São José de Ubá, RJ, Brazil Neotropical Entomology
Blackmer,Jacquelyn L.; Eiras,Alvaro E.; Souza,Claudio L. M. de.
Neoleucinodes elegantalis (Guenée) is one of the most important pests in several tomato growing regions of Brazil. The neonate larva enters the fruit shortly after eclosion, a characteristic that limits the effectiveness of insecticides and biological control agents. A better understanding of the cues that elicit or inhibit host-plant location and oviposition by N. elegantalis could lead to novel control strategies. Our findings indicate that N. elegantalis deposited 89% of its eggs on small fruits (23.1±0.95 mm), and that 76% of the eggs were placed on the first four basal fruits within the fruit cluster. The average number of eggs/egg mass was 2.9±0.17 (range 1-13), and approximately 70% of these were deposited in a single oviposition bout. The...

Effect of soil pH on the growth and taste of tomato, and efficacy of organic fertilizer in improvement of the tomato growth OAK

Evaluation of Antifungal Potential of Leaf Extract of Chenopodium murale Against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici Planta Daninha
NAQVI,S.F.; JAVAID,A.; QURESHI,M.Z..
ABSTRACT: The present study was performed to evaluate antifungal activity and GC-MS analysis of leaf extract of Chenopodium mural against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici (FOL), a highly problematic soil-borne pathogen of tomato. Dried leaves of C. murale were extracted with methanol for 2 weeks and after evaporating the solvent on a rotary evaporator, antifungal bioassay was carried out against FOL. All concentrations (1 to 5%) significantly reduced FOL biomass by 14-45%. The remaining methanolic extract was fractioned with n-hexane, chloroform and ethyl acetate and all these fractions were assayed for their antifungal potential. A 200 mg mL-1 concentration of various sub-fractions reduced fungal biomass significantly by 94-98% over control. All the...

Anatomical Changes on the Stem and Leaves of Solanum lycopersicum Caused by Different Concentrations of Picloram + 2,4-D, in Two Different Types of Soil Planta Daninha
BATISTÃO,A.C.; YAMASHITA,O.M.; SILVA,I.V.; ARAÚJO,C.F.; LAVEZO,A..
ABSTRACT: Contamination by herbicides with a prolonged effect on the soil can cause anatomical changes in sensitive plants. Thus, this study aimed at verifying the anatomical changes of tomato stem and leaves caused by different concentrations of picloram in two classes of soil from the Amazon region. The study was developed at UNEMAT, Alta Floresta - Mato Grosso state, in a CRD, in a 2 x 5 factorial arrangement, with four replications. A clayey Rhodic Hapludox (LVAw) and a sandy clay loam Typic Ustipsamments (RQo) were contaminated with 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 L ha-1 of Tordon®, leaving the soil exposed to weathering. One-hundred and twenty days after the application of the herbicide, 10 tomato seeds were sown in samples of both soils. Thirty days after sowing,...

EVOLUÇÃO DA PRODUÇÃO DE TOMATE DE MESA NO ESTADO DE RONDÔNIA AgEcon
Simao, Rogerio; Rodriguez, Tomas Daniel Menendez.

Economic Analysis of Post-harvest Losses in Marketing of Vegetables in Uttarakhand AgEcon
Sharma, Gaurav; Singh, S.P..
The study has examined the nature and extent of post-harvest losses in vegetable supply chain in the Kumaon division of Uttarakhand. Multistage cluster sampling has been used for selection of 80 vegetable growers, 40 farmers from the hilly region and 40 farmers from the bhabhar region. The sample has also included 25 market functionaries. Twelve major vegetables have been selected for the study. The maximum aggregate post-harvest losses have been found in tomato, followed by potato, brinjal, chilly, French bean and pea. The study has suggested that establishment of producer co-operatives to handle various activities relating to production and marketing of vegetables would help in reducing post-harvest losses.

Florida Agriculture and the Vegetable Industry AgEcon
Stevens, Thomas J., III; Hodges, Alan W.; Mulkey, W. David.
Florida ranked ninth in the U.S. in agricultural receipts for the year 2000, and ranked first or second in receipts for 12 of the nation's top 25 agricultural commodities. Ten of these twelve leading agricultural commodities were fresh fruits or vegetables, and combined, they represented over 45 percent of the state's agricultural receipts in 2000. Despite Florida's preeminent standing as a producer of fresh fruits and vegetables, it's future leadership in this industry is less clear. In real terms, Florida's annual agricultural receipts have declined from $7.41 billion in 1992, to $6.42 billion in 2001. In 2000, receipts fell by over $521 million, the sharpest one-year drop since 1990. The overall trend in fresh vegetable receipts for the State has been...

Border Effects on Spatial Price Transmission between Fresh Tomato Markets in Ghana and Burkina-Faso: Any Case for Promoting Trans-Border Trade in West Africa? AgEcon
Amikuzuno, Joseph.
Cross-border trade in food commodities within sub-regional economic blocks in Sub-Sahara Africa (SSA) is believed to be faster, cheaper, more convenient and welfare-enhancing than overseas trade between SSA countries and the USA, EU and the BRIC countries. The difficulty of commodity arbitrage across international borders SSA is however a fundamental constraint to price transmission, market integration and the realisation of the welfare-enhancing role of cross-border trade in Africa. This study examines the impact of border and distance on price transmission between tomato markets in Ghana and Burkina-Faso. The analysis applies a regime-switching vector error correction model to estimate semi-weekly, wholesale prices of tomato in four tomato markets in...

Seasonal Asymmetric Price Transmission in Ghanaian Tomato Markets: Adapting Johansen’s Estimation Method AgEcon
Amikuzuno, Joseph; Ihle, Rico.
We assess market integration and price transmission of perishable agricultural produce in Sub-Saharan Africa by studying Ghanaian tomato markets which are characterized by pronounced seasonality in production and trade flows. We analyse the tomato markets of Ghana by simultaneously regarding its five most important markets, Navrongo, Techiman, Kumasi, Tamale and Accra, in a multivariate asymmetric price transmission framework. The estimation of the model is based on a unique dataset and on a modified version of the Johansen estimation procedure which is suitable for estimating such multivariate models. We estimate the price transmission parameters for four regimes which are a combination of the seasonal patterns in trade flows and asymmetries in the...
