The use of computable general equilibrium models to assess water policies AgEcon

This paper discusses basic issues in project analysis and shows how these issues can be resolved in a computable general equilibrium (CGE) framework. The role of border prices and intersectoral linkages is explored. The CGE framework is compared to less comprehensive frameworks, including benefit-cost analysis, input-output models, multi-market models, and models based on social accounting matrices (SAMs). An illustrative CGE model of the southern portion of the San Joaquin Valley is constructed and is used to find the effects of reducing water inputs on aggregate Valley gross domestic product (GDP) and on sectoral output, employment, and land use. Productivity and performance of irrigated wheat farms across canal commands in the Lower Indus Basin AgEcon

A study of the enormous differences in agricultural productivity that exist across farms and regions in Pakistan, where, for example, recent farm-level data from Sindh, indicates that irrigated wheat output per hectare varies from 0.5 to 5.4 tons across farms. Looks at the central goal of agricultural policy in the country, viz. improving and sustaining productivity, narrowing the existing productivity gaps, and enhancing resource use efficiencies to meet food requirements of a rapidly growing population.

The Central and West Coast groundwater basins (“basins” or “Central and West Coast Basins”) are located in southern Los Angeles County. Groundwater produced from these basins provides approximately forty percent of the water supply for residents and businesses in all or parts of 43 cities. The 4 million residents in the area comprise more than ten percent of the total population of the State of California. ECONOMIC VALUATION OF SOME WETLAND OUTPUTS OF MUD LAKE, MINNESOTA-SOUTH DAKOTA AgEcon

The objective of this study was to estimate some economic values of Mud Lake, a managed, lacustrine wetland on the Minnesota-South Dakota border. Several outputs of Mud Lake were identified and an economic value was estimated for each. Flood control was valued at approximately $440 per acre, based on dollar damages prevented; water supply, using public utility revenues, was valued at $94 per acre; fish/wildlife habitat, recreation, and aesthetics were valued at about $21 per acre using the Contingent Valuation Method; and corrective expenditures were used to evaluate water quality at a negative per acre value of $180. Underground and surface water as a result of human activity are increasingly polluted. Mainly due to improper disposal of waste, discharge of effluents, among other actions that compromise the environment. The water analysis is necessary to determine and evaluate the situation of water supply to the population. This study evaluated the supply situation of three rural communities located in the south of Brazil, where the water is carried out through the abstraction of groundwater. The bananas are thought to be particularly sensitive to changes in the environment. This review considers some historical and recent investigations into the response of the leaf, root and reproductive system to the environment. Monteith's analysis of the response of plants to intercepted radiation is appropriate for analyzing the productivity of bananas and plantains. The banana is sensitive to soil water deficits, and expanding tissues such as emerging leaves and growing fruit are among the first to be affected. As soil begins to dry, stomata close and leaves remain highly hydrated, probably through root pressure. Productivity is affected because of the early closure of stomata.
