Argentina has a long tradition as a beef producer country. Cattle in particular, have played a major role in the traditional environment as a source of food, employment and savings. Many of the typical symbols of this country are found within an environment of ranches, cowboys, horses and cattle, called in Spanish: Estancias Gauchos, Caballos and Ganado. The cattle sector not only represents a source of food, employment and savings to many people in Argentina, but is also a social symbol which the Argentines are proud of and identify with. Cattle can be sold at the ranch or at any city market. The selling and buying operations are performed through open auctions. If the animal is sold for fattening, the price is set per head. When it is going to... |

Based on apprehending the conception of intensive use of woodland, 12 indices are selected from the aspects of economy, society, ecology and so on according to the principles of scientific systematization, collectible index and system inner linkage. A scientific evaluation index system for woodland intensive use is constructed. Range Standardization Method is adopted in order to eliminate the differences among indices; index weight is calculated by the objective variation coefficient weight method. Physio geographic condition, woodland area and forest resource of Wenhe Operating Zone in Yakeshi City, China are introduced. According to the 2004-2008 relevant statistical data, intensive use level of Wenhe Operating Zone is evaluated. Result shows that the... |

Drought is a natural hazard that cannot be avoided significantly within the present level of scientific development. Studies and experiments to overcome drought have not yet reached the stage of development where the world can depend on the available scientific technology to avoid droughts. As a result, both scientifically developed and the developing nations face the problem equally. The recent droughts of the Sahel and Northeast Africa and the current drought of the Great Plains of the United States show how diverse the distribution of the problem is and the range of possible effects that might be sustained in the poor regions of the world such as the Sahel and the more developed regions like the Great Plains. There is a large body of experience on... |

The average per capita protein consumption in the Philippines is very low, only 44.1 grams annually. This is primarily due both to the limited income of consumers and the inadequate supply of protein source products such as fish, pork, chicken, eggs, beef, and vegetables. The supply of protein source products from local sources has long been lagging behind the demand for domestic consumption. The reason for this is that expansion of the more traditional animal protein sources such as pork and chicken is severely constrained by the shortage of feed-grains and the strong competition for the use of the grains for direct human consumption. The short-run alternative adopted to solve the problem was to supplement local supply by importing meat and meat... |

In recent years the condition of our physical environment has become an area of increasing public concern. This concern has manifested itself in the form of legislated rules, formulated and administered by public agencies at the local, state, and federal levels, designed to control the use and degradation of the environment in a manner consistent with societal goals and objectives. Of the forms of environmental degradation pollution of the air and waters has received particular attention. Agriculture has a number of sources or potential sources of pollution. These include: (1) human wastes from the farm (human) population; (2) crop residues; (3) food processing wastes; (4) dead animals; (5) agricultural chemical residues; and (6) animal wastes.... |

Agriculture surveys and literature establish that sorghum was of the most important food crops in Mozambique. A large number of farmers have been shifting production gradually from sorghum to maize production despite its susceptibility to drought. The general objective of this study is to identify the factors responsible for decline of sorghum production in Mozambique. Comparative analysis between sorghum and maize are done. Enterprise budgets and break even analysis for both sorghum and maize are presented and discussed. Supply functions for sorghum and maize from 1950 to 1985 are estimated. It is concluded that the major factors responsible for sorghum production decline are the lack of security in the country side, drought during the last ten... |

This dissertation focuses on the theoretical modeling and empirical testing of household motivations for the in situ conservation of crop genetic resources (CGR). An original household survey is used to test whether the household diversity outcomes are different for the cropping system as a whole, for the principal crop, maize, or for the secondary crops, beans and squash. Agro-ecological characteristics and market characteristics are found to significantly affect the levels of diversity maintained by households. A review of the economic literature relevant to modeling in situ conservation is presented. A theoretical model is developed in which a household's decision to plant a milpa variety is linked to household, agro-ecological, and market... |

This research focuses on evaluating the main characteristics that are considered in commodity procurement decisions used by food manufacturers. The research contributes to the literature by filling a gap in both the commodity and procurement literature. There is a large literature on commodity selling, but very little on commodity procurement. Further, much of the literature on procurement focuses on non-commodity products, not commodity products. A case study approach was used to determine the factors that affect commodity procurement decisions and to examine the strategic nature of commodity procurement departments. Further, the research developed a model of commodity procurement decision making. First, a commodity procurement department must... |

Energy use and it's availability, now and in the future, have been of increasing concern as the decade of the 1970's elapsed and the 1980's begin. This paper describes a farm energy audit project that addressed this concern of energy use by farms in Michigan. The objectives of this paper are fourfold. First, is documentation of the Michigan Farm Energy Audit Study. This involves the step-by-step procedure as to formulation and development of the project. The second objective is to report the results of Phase I of the project. The third objective is to evaluate the feasibility of going from a pilot program to a more generalized system. This evaluation includes specification of the changes needed to expand the project to a more general system.... |

This study presents a critical analysis of procedures currently used to estimate the opportunity costs of unskilled labor in developing countries. The issue is particularly germane today. Economic analysis is playing an increasingly important role in most developing country agricultural and industrial production. Many labor markets, however, remain relatively thin and subject to a variety of market distortions which render the job of the economic analyst extremely difficult. In light of these conditions, this research aims to accomplish the following three objectives: 1) To critically evaluate methods currently used for estimating opportunity costs of labor and the adherence of these methods to the underlying dictates of economic theory; 2) To... |

In recent years, numerous policy makers and educators in Michigan have advocated increasing participation of land use planning officials in land use-related education and training. The Michigan Land Use Leadership Council, commissioned by Governor Granholm, recommended that 60% of planning and zoning officials complete basic land use planning, zoning, and smart growth educational programs by 2010. However, while demographic information has been gathered on planning officials, little empirical research has been conducted on the determinants of participating in land use education and training. This paper uses regression analysis to estimate and interpret a demand function for participation in land use-related education and training. Results indicate... |

Actual farm records were used to evaluate variation of crop yields for corn, wheat, and soybeans grown in Michigan. The assumption of yields being normally distribute with independent and constant variance was tested for all farms, farms characterized by soil groupings, and individual farms of a selected soil group. Sufficient evidence was not found to reject the assumption that yield variation is normally distributed with independent and constant variance when all farms were grouped together. Grouping farms by soil potential showed strong support for yields being independent and normally distributed. The assumption of constant variance had strong support for wheat, but was weak for corn. Analysis of individual farms for a selected soil group,... |

Using a partial equilibrium model, the benefits of providing improved agricultural market information to farmers and small-scale traders of maize, millet, sorghum and paddy rice in Mali are estimated. The value of information is estimated as the reduction in dead-weight loss when farmers and small-scale traders with rational expectations respond to improved price forecasts from Market Information Systems. The study finds that benefits from improved information, which can also be viewed as a reduction of the cost of being off the equilibrium price and quantity, are great when there is high uncertainty about future prices, high own-price elasticity of supply, low own-price elasticity of demand, and high value of crop output. The study suggests that... |

The existing social and institutional structures at the village level are so occupied with immediate issues of survival that they have been unable to divert much of their energy to long term development goals. The situation is characterized by the existence of "social traps" which lead people to adopt short term solutions and ignore the long term consequences of their actions. At such low income levels future expected returns are also likely to be discounted at very high rates. It is a reflection of the state of affairs that very little new land was brought under cultivation since independence. Individually, the farmers lacked the resources which could enable them to develop new land. The opening of the Karakorum highway has created new economic... |

This paper presents a quantitative analysis of the Chinese wheat and rice industries. The specific purpose is to analyze government policies for wheat and rice, and their impacts on industry performance. Dynamic relationships among prices, quantities and total GNP are investigated with a vector autoregression using Chinese data. Government intervention in domestic commodity markets is quite common in China. The Chinese government is not only heavily involved in production, but also in marketing and distribution of most commodities, especially agricultural products. Production planning and collection rationing are used to reduce the need for food imports. Grain price policy is used as an economic tool to promote the government's objectives of... |

Some agricultural project analysts advocate that "small-scale" perimeters are more cost effective and successful than large ones. Patterson argues that the small scale perimeter if potentially conducive to development because of their smallness and their flexibility in terms of innovations. Morever a recent survey irrigation in the Sahelian countries by Stryker, Gotsch, McIntire and Roche, suggests that labor intensive schemes generally have better distributional characteristics than those that are more capital intensive. These advantages attributed to the small schemes have even biased some donors towards funding small scale perimeters. Efforts to expand rice production and therefore to increase self-sufficiency can be analyzed in terms of their... |

Hazardous wastes such as spent solvents and heavy-metal paint waste are characterized by certain adverse properties which include toxicity, reactivity, corrosivity, and flammability. Improper disposal of hazardous wastes may lead to air pollution, water pollution, or soil contamination which are dangerous for human health and for the ecosystem. These effects are known as externalities if the consequences, or costs, are not considered in the waste-generators' decisions. Due to externality, the social costs, including externality costs, and private costs diverge. Since the Love Canal event, hazardous waste disposal (HWD) has drawn national attention. A Roper poll reported that hazardous waste was perceived by the American public as the most important... |
