Assessment and comparisons of the environmental, economic and social performances of organic and conventional cattle systems Organic Eprints
Pavie, Jérome; Chambaut, H.; Madeline, L.; Experton, Catherine.
The main objective of "CedABio" was to estimate the environmental and socioeconomic benefits anticipated in the bovine farming systems adopting an organic production mode. Beyond some obvious advantages, the goal was to measure and ascertain the real contributions of a change to organic farming for the dairy and beef farms. To lead this assessment, strong and technically accessible indicators were selected, tested, and then looked for in 144 livestock farms, located in varied contexts to take into account territorial diversity. Half of the farms were in organic mode. Their results are compared with the other half producing in conventional mode, situated in the same zones, with similar structures. The results and the observations performed in this...

Production Efficiency and Diversification in Mexican Coffee-Producing Districts AgEcon
Vedenov, Dmitry V.; Houston, Jack E.; Cardenas, Gabriela.
Coffee production system is analyzed for 24 municipios (districts) in Veracruz, Mexico, from 1997 to 2002. A stochastic frontier approach is used to estimate an input distance function and to evaluate production efficiency. Results show the production process to be stable over time despite global price fluctuations. Production of staple crop (corn) with either coffee or other cash crops results in increased efficiency as a result of the economies of complementarity, while production of coffee with other cash crops leads to lower efficiency. Factors contributing to higher efficiency included higher population density, road availability, and higher altitude, typically associated with production of higher-quality coffee.

A COMPETITIVENESS STUDY OF FOUR RICE PRODUCTION SYSTEMS IN TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO AgEcon
Seecharan, Denny; Jacque, Andrew Eliel.
Rice imports into Trinidad and Tobago in 2005 represented approximately 95% of domestic demand. Local production has been declining since reaching a peak of 21,000 tonnes in 1992. Present production is 3,500 tonnes. Rice is produced under a variety of production systems and on farms of varying sizes, productivity and quality of output. This paper examines the competitiveness of four production systems used in Trinidad and Tobago, viz.: the transplanting system (ST), the broadcast seeded system (SB)(both being small farms and highly labour intensive), the partially mechanized system of medium sized farms (MM) and a fully mechanized large farm utilizing aerial technology in the production system (CRP). The methodology involved the collection of data on...

Using 'Inclusive Wealth' to Measure and Model Sustainable Development in Australia: A working example AgEcon
Harris, Michael; Pearson, Leonie J..
Australia in 1992 adopted the National Strategy for Ecologically Sustainable Development to ensure all future development occurs in a 'sustainable' manner. Measurement of the nation's sustainable development is currently conducted through the OECD Environmental Performance Review and various other ad-hoc indicators or measures have been proposed, such as greening the national accounts (Green Gross National Product) and the Genuine Progress Indicator. No one has identified a clear and precise way to either measure or model sustainable development in Australia. By trialing the implementation of inclusive wealth theory in Australia, this paper aims to identify and comment on the issues of measuring and modelling sustainable development as a stock measure in...

Adoption of Technology, Management Practices, and Production Systems by U.S. Beef Cow-Calf Producers AgEcon
Pruitt, J. Ross; Gillespie, Jeffrey M.; Nehring, Richard F.; Qushim, Berdikul.
Using USDA’s Agricultural Resource Management Survey data, factors leading to the adoption of technology, management practices, and production systems by U.S. beef cow-calf producers are analyzed. Binary logit regression models are used to determine impacts of vertical integration; region of the U.S.; farm size, diversification, and tenure; and demographics on adoption decisions. Significant differences were found in adoption rates by region of the U.S., degree of vertical integration, and size of operation, suggesting the presence of economies of size and vertical economies of scope. Results also indicate high degrees of complementarity among technologies, management practices, and production systems.

Technical efficiency and technology gaps in beef cattle production systems in Kenya: A stochastic metafrontier analysis AgEcon
Otieno, David Jakinda; Hubbard, Lionel J.; Ruto, Eric.
In this study the stochastic metafrontier method is used to investigate technical efficiency and technology gaps across three main beef cattle production systems in Kenya. Results show that there is significant inefficiency in nomadic and agro-pastoral systems. Further, in contrast with ranches, these two systems were found to have lower technology gap ratios. The average pooled technical efficiency was estimated to be 0.69, which suggests that there is considerable scope to improve beef production in Kenya

Olivo,Clair Jorge; Agnolin,Carlos Alberto; Aguirre,Priscila Flôres; Bem,Cláudia Marques de; Araújo,Tiago Luís da Ros de; Diehl,Michelle Schalemberg; Meinerz,Gilmar Roberto.
The objective was to evaluate elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.) pastures, under the agroecological and conventional systems, as forage mass and stocking rate. In the agroecological system, the elephant grass was established in rows spaced by 3.0 m from each other. During the cool season ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) was established between these rows, which allowed the development of spontaneous growth species during the warm season. In the conventional system the elephant grass was established singularly in rows spaced 1.4 m from each other. Organic and chemical fertilizers were applied at 150 kg of N/ha/year with in the pastures under agroecological and conventional systems, respectively. Lactating Holstein cows which received 5.0 kg/day...

Development of a calculation model and production cost index for feedlot beef cattle R. Bras. Zootec.
Sartorello,Gustavo Lineu; Bastos,João Paulo Sigolo Teixeira; Gameiro,Augusto Hauber.
ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to develop a feedlot beef cattle calculation model and production cost analysis and, from the results obtained, devise a production cost index. A case study was conducted to understand the characteristics of the productive processes of a commercial feedlot. Then, based on the Economic Theory, cost items of the farm under analysis were identified and transferred to a spreadsheet. The survey included ten feedlot farmers from the state of São Paulo and other nine from the state of Goiás and was carried out to determine representative properties, and prices of items used were monitored. Production costs of each farm were calculated, and theoretical concepts of index numbers were used to devise the feedlot cattle...

Energy balance methodology and modeling of supplementary forage production for cattle in Brazil Scientia Agricola
Romanelli,Thiago Libório; Milan,Marcos.
Cattle is the main protein source in Brazil and cattle production depends on preserving forage in order to decrease the influence of dry periods on grass production. To minimize such problems, some new techniques have been created to increase the yield which also leads to energy demand increase. Energy balance is a vital tool to evaluate the efficiency of energy consumption in production systems. There is no standard methodology established for this determination. It is also difficult to analyze different management options because of the complexity of the production systems and the interactions among variables. Therefore the purpose of this study is to develop a methodology that supports the development of a model, using a spreadsheet, and to use it to...

A crop model-based approach for sunflower yields Scientia Agricola
Leite,João Guilherme Dal Belo; Silva,João Vasco; Justino,Flávio Barbosa; Ittersum,Martin K. van.
Pushed by the Brazilian biodiesel policy, sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) production is becoming increasingly regarded as an option to boost farmers' income, particularly under semi-arid conditions. Biodiesel related opportunities increase the demand for decision-making information at different levels, which could be met by simulation models. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of the crop model OILCROP-SUN to simulate sunflower development and growth under Brazilian conditions and to explore sunflower water- and nitrogen-limited, water-limited and potential yield and yield variability over an array of sowing dates in the northern region of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. For model calibration, an experiment was conducted in which two...
