Themisto gaudichaudii, the most abundant and widely distributed hyperiid amphipod in Argentine shelf waters, provides a source of food for several species of economical value such as the anchovy, mackerel, hake, and squid. Predictive dry weight-length and volume-length regression were established in order to provide an indirect estimation of the individual body mass from a measurement of body length. Samples were collected in San Jorge Gulf and fixed with a 4 o/o formaldehyde solution. The possible effect of formaldehyde fixation on dry weight and volume is discussed. |

The analysis of DNA damage by mean of Comet or single cell gel electrophoresis (SCGE) assay has been commonly used to assess genotoxic impact in aquatic animals being able to detect exposure to low concentrations of contaminants in a wide range of species. The aims of this work were 1) to evaluate the usefulness of the Comet to detect DNA strand breakage in dolphin leukocytes, 2) to use the DNA diffusion assay to determine the amount of DNA strand breakage associated with apoptosis or necrosis, and 3) to determine the proportion of DNA strand breakage that was unrelated to apoptosis and necrosis. Significant intra-individual variation was observed in all of the estimates of DNA damage. DNA strand breakage was overestimated because a considerable amount... |

This work includes the composition and distribution of phytoplankton in the coastal region. For this purpose were established 23 stations on three regions and six sections divided from the northern region of Esmeraldas to the south of Puerto Bolívar, this work was carried out at the Research Vessel Orión in december 2008. The greater diversity of the phytoplankton community in the surface layer was observed in the Central Region, Specifically in section 4 with a total of 84 species, highlighting the dominant species of diatoms as Rhizosolenia stolterfothii, Thalasssiosira subtilis, R. imbricata, Proboscia alata, Chaetoceros affinis, and in the group there were abundant dinoflagellates Gonyaulax poledra and Goniodoma polyedricum, characteristics of the... |

Whitemouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri)has a broad distribution along the Atlantic coast of the Americas, from Mexico to the south of the Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. At the southern end of distribution, Argentina and Uruguay catch the species with different commercial fleet types bay or creek, coastal and off-shore and modalities of bottom trawling with doors and paired trawling. Maximum catches of both countries, that reached 60,000 t, were registered between 1995 and 1997. After that period a remarkable decrease was observed, specially in Argentina where catches remained at around 6,000 t over a total of 30,000 t for both countries. The commercial fleet was divided in three categories and the total area of study in three subareas: El Salado,... |

Recent range extensions of the invasive rapa whelk Rapana venosa, biological data of the population and possible ecological impacts on the food webs of the Rio de la Plata estuary are presented. A total of 41 rapa whelks and 21 egg capsules were collected between February 2004 and March 2006. Specimens were found all over the mixohaline waters of the estuary, with records off Montevideo, Samborombon Bay and off Punta Rasa. Specimens ranged between 28 and 120 mm shell length. Almost all R. venosa presented epibionts all over the shell, suggesting an exposed lifestyle. Egg-masses were attached to specimens of R. venosa, debris and plastic garbage. The spatial distribution of R. venosa within the estuary was coupled with the spatial distribution of Mactra... |

Benthic communities of the Río de la Plata estuary and their trophic link with Micropogonias furnieri, Paralonchurus brasiliensis, Menticirrhus americanus, Cynoscion guatucupa, Macrodon ancylodon and Umbrina canosai, six species of the Sciaenidae Family, were studied. Benthic composition was characterized using 122 sampling sites between 1999 and 2005. Multivariate and univariate statistical tools were used to analyze diversity, abundance and biomass patterns. A total of 370 taxa were found at the study area. Four areas were established using benthic composition: Inner Río de la Plata (RdP), middle RdP, outer RdP and Marine zone. Higher abundance (9,877 ind/m2) and biomass (1,456.8 g/m2) values were found at middle RdP. Nephtys fluviatilis, Heteromastus... |

PIRATA (Brazil, France, USA) has deployed between 1997 and 2001, an array of 12 ATLAS buoys with the objective of monitoring, describing and understanding the evolution of sea surface temperature, upper ocean thermal and saline structure, net heat budget, air-sea fluxes of momentum, latent and sensible heat and fresh water in the tropical Atlantic. The oceanic and meteorological observations are transmitted to shore via satellite and are available in near real-time on the Internet. They are communicated to the Global Telecommunication System and readily available for ocean and weather prediction models. The ultimate objective of PIRATA is real-time ocean monitoring to enable resource prediction in the adjacent countries. |

A seasonal study of the diversity of benthic foraminifera in the Bonny estuary was carried out at ten Stations located at various zones in the estuary. Four diversity indices, species number[S], Fisher & shannon Wiener function H(S) Equitability (E) were employed in the analysis. Examination of the spatial distribution and seasonal variations of these indices provided information on the responses of the foraminiferal fauna pollution. Diversity indices, S& and H(s) were found to be consistently low at station 5 (NNPC Refinery jetty Okrika). The dominance of pollution – tolerant species such as Ammotium salsum, Miliammina fusca and Ammonia beccarii at this station was also observed. The loe diversity indices recorded at station 5 is attributed to... |

The Fisheries division of the Ministry of Fisheries and Cooperatives is involved in research, development, management and protection of fishery resources of Mauritius. It is divided into a Fishery Research and Development Service and a Fisheries Protection Service. The latter section is primarily concerned with the protection of fishery resources and enforcement of Fisheries Act. The Albion Fisheries Research Centre (AFRC), established in 1982, comprises the technical services of the Ministry and is responsible for research and development in the fishery sector. Its activities include resource assessment and management, development of fishing technology, fish quality inspection, studies on the marine environment, establishment of marine parks, and... |
