Cooperatives are an important form of business organization in North Dakota; 405 cooperatives were operating in the state in 2004, with most (224) related to agriculture (farm supply, agricultural processing, and grain handling). In addition, 33 utility, 66 financial, and 82 cooperatives classified as "other" were operating in the state in 2004. Cooperatives exist to enhance sale price, reduce costs, or provide a service or product for their member-owners, but they also contribute significantly to the state's economy. This report will provide estimates of the contribution North Dakota cooperatives make to the state economy measured in terms of such key economic indicators as retail trade, personal income, total business activity, employment, and tax... |

Agricultural areas can be significantly impacted by high-value crops. Irrigated potato production has significantly affected central North Dakota. Interested growers in the Jamestown area recognized the need and the potential for irrigated potato production and processing, and eventually convinced a private company to build a processing plant to make frozen potato products from their irrigated potatoes. Securing a private entity to process their product freed up capital for irrigation development and other potato enterprise purchases. Economic impacts resulting from the addition of irrigated potatoes and associated processing were analyzed in this study. This analysis is divided into two parts, construction/start-up (one-time) and operational... |

The health care industry's far-reaching economic influence within North Dakota is the focus of this report. An input-output model is used to estimate the economic impact of hospitals and long-term care nursing facilities. The analysis shows that nearly 8 percent of the state's total business activity, nearly 10 percent of the state's total retail sales, and nearly 19 percent of the state's total employment in 1991 were attributable to hospitals and long-term care nursing facilities. In addition, these facilities generated nearly $41 million of tax revenues for the state in 1991. |

The basic sectors are central to the growth and vitality of any economic system, and current and accurate information regarding changes in an area's economic base is vital to local economic development planning efforts. This report provides estimates of the economic base by economic sector for North Dakota counties for the period 1960-1991. The data indicate that agriculture remains North Dakota's most important basic sector, accounting for 50 percent or more of the economic base in 31 of the state's 53 counties in 1991. The energy sectors play a significant role in the economic base of a number of western North Dakota counties. Energy extraction and conversion accounted for 50 percent or more of the economic base in seven counties in 1991. Manufacturing... |

This study examines the economic impacts that have resulted from new or recently expanded North Dakota firms in three sectors (agricultural processing, other manufacturing, and exportable services), addressing such dimensions as number of jobs created, compensation paid to employees, and the expenditures made to entities within the local area and elsewhere in the state. Information was obtained from a questionnaire completed by 42 new or recently expanded firms. The responding firms had added an average of 29 jobs from 1990 to 1996. General labor was the job category accounting for the largest number of workers overall (52 percent), followed by skilled labor (16 percent) and management (12 percent). About 65 percent of the firms' new jobs have been... |

The economic base of North Dakota and its eight substate regions has changed over the past couple of decades. This report takes an in-depth look at the economic base for each of these areas over the 1958-1984 period. Each of the regions has a unique composition of basic activities that have been responsible for its growth. Natural resource related activities, either in the form of agricultural or energy production, have been the largest source of real economic growth within the state. The purpose of this report is to identify the components of the economic base at substate levels and to show the changes in relative composition for these activities. Price and production data are presented to support and explain the changes that have occurred. |

This report provides estimates of the contribution North Dakota's cooperatives make to the state economy. A survey was used to obtain information about cooperatives' expenditures to entities within the state during the year 2000; a total of 137 usable surveys were obtained. The North Dakota Input-Output Model was used to analyze the economic contribution of the cooperatives to the state. The results indicated that the cooperatives' direct in-state expenditures totaled $1.6 billion in 2000. The largest expenditure category was the household sector, which comprised payroll, patronage refunds, and stock retirement and accounted for 46 percent of total direct expenditures. Through the multiplier process, the initial $1.6 billion of direct impacts were... |

Changing demographics in rural and urban North Dakota have provided both opportunities and challenges for rural communities. Cass County boasts the state's largest and fastest growing urban center, but the impact of the county's growth extends beyond the Fargo-West Fargo city limits. Towns like Casselton, Horace, and Kindred have experienced substantial changes not only in the number of residents, but also in the composition of households and their business and service needs and preferences. To address these questions, the Rural Cass County Business and Services Preference Survey was designed to identify and quantify residents' perceptions on a variety of issues. This report details respondents' perceptions on quality of life issues, business and... |
