The relationship between import and retail prices: a case study of fresh grapefruit in Japan AgEcon
Woolsey, Michael D.; Brown, Mark G.; Lee, Jonq-Ying.
The study examined the relationship between import price and retail price of grapefruit in Japan. Estimated retail-import price relationship indicate asymmetry responses distributed over time. Import price changes are not fully transmitted to the retail level, with import price increases being passed on more fully than import price decreases.

THE IMPACT OF INVENTORY ON TUNA PRICE: AN APPLICATION OF SCALING IN THE ROTTERDAM INVERSE DEMAND SYSTEM AgEcon
Chiang, Fu-Sung; Lee, Jonq-Ying; Brown, Mark G..
This study adopted the scaling approach to examine the impacts of inventories on tuna auction prices in Japan using the Rotterdam inverse demand system. The inclusion of two inventory variables in the model only increases the number of parameters by two. Results indicate that frozen tunas are more likely to be close substitutes, fresh and frozen tunas of the same species are also likely to be substitutes, and inventory had significant impacts on auction prices.

Orange-Juice and Grapefruit-Juice Contributions to Nutrient Intakes by Americans AgEcon
Lee, Jonq-Ying.
The NHANES 2003-04 data show that OJ and GJ users drank less than an 8-ounce serving per day in the two-day recalls and about 30% of the Americans drank OJ in the two-day recalls – ranked sixth. The NHANES 2003-04 data also show that less than 1% of the Americans drank GJ in the two-day recalls – ranked at the bottom. Although OJ ranked sixth in the participant penetration rate and seventh in per capita consumption among the 14 beverages studied, OJ ranked number one in providing vitamins C and E, and folate; number two in providing potassium, iron, dietary fibers, vitamin B-6, and -carotene; and ranked last in providing sodium and cholesterol. OJ provided only 2.4% of the carbohydrates and 4.4% of the sugar in the average American diet. OJ has a...

RESTRICTIONS ON THE EFFECTS OF PREFERENCE VARIABLES IN THE ROTTERDAM MODEL AgEcon
Brown, Mark G.; Lee, Jonq-Ying.
This study examines imposing and testing restrictions on preference variables in the Rotterdam model through the impacts of these variables on marginal utilities. An empirical analysis of the impact of a female labor force participation variable in a Rotterdam demand system for fresh fruit illustrates the methodology. This variable was modeled through its impact on marginal utilities via "adjusted" prices, following theoretical work by Basmann and Barten, among others. Results show that the female labor participation has negatively impacted the demands for citrus, while positively impacting the demands for other fresh fruit.

An Index to Measure Health Status AgEcon
Lee, Jonq-Ying; Rampersaud, Gail S.; Brown, Mark G..
In this study we developed a health status index using the commonly recorded health measures by doctors and hospitals. This health status index has a minimum possible value of 7 (the least healthy) and a maximum value of 21 (the healthiest). Using the NHANES data, we explored the relationship of this health status index and nutrient intakes, lifestyle, and demographics of the respondent. Regression results showed that as the age of the respondent, being non-Hispanic black, participants of food stamp programs, high percent of calories that came from fat intakes, high percent of calories in beverages that came from soft drinks, smoking, and on special diets are negatively related to the value of the health status index (i.e., the person became less...

Technology in the Differential Input Demand Model AgEcon
Brown, Mark G.; Lee, Jonq-Ying.
This study considers incorporating changes in technology in the differential input demand system through effects on output and input marginal products. The effects of technology on input demand are related to Slutsky coefficients and input shares of marginal cost. Technology effects on marginal-product changes are viewed as price changes, and restrictions on technology are considered.

Are Fruit Juice Categories Separable? AgEcon
Knight, Erika P.; House, Lisa; Lee, Jonq-Ying; Spreen, Thomas H..
Supermarket shelves are saturated with numerous varieties and brands of juice beverages. This high level of assortment has dramatically changed beverage consumption patterns and trends throughout the United States. In fact, during 2004-2005, energy and sport drinks experienced significant increases in sales, 65.9% and 20.6 %, respectively. During the same period of time, refrigerated juice sales increased a mere 2.2%, shelved non-fruit drinks decreased 0.9%, bottled juices and cocktails both decreased 1.5 % and frozen juice decreased by 12.8% (Food Industry Review 2006). The beverage industry has undergone many transformations, but consumer theory states that a shift in demand for one good has to be compensated by a shift in the opposite directions in the...

QUASI SEPARABILITY: A DIFFERENTIAL DEMAND SYSTEM APPROACH AgEcon
Brown, Mark G.; Lee, Jonq-Ying.
A differential demand system for quasi separability is developed, following the approach used by Theil et al. in developing the Working-PI time series model. The Slutsky coefficients vary with commodity budget shares and intergroup substitution depends on group compensated price effects.

Effects of Taxing Sugar-Sweetened Beverage and Subsidizing Milk: Beverage Consumption, Nutrition, and Obesity among US Children AgEcon
Lin, Biing-Hwan; Smith, Travis A.; Lee, Jonq-Ying.
Taxing sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) has been proposed as a means to improve U.S. diet and health and generate revenue to address obesity-related issues. A related concern is that children’s intake of SSBs, a third that of milk consumption in the late 1970s, now equals milk consumption. Displacing milk by SSBs may shortchange the buildup of bone mass, increasing the risk of fractures and osteoporosis in later life. Accordingly, we examine the effects that a 20- percent SSB tax and a 20-percent milk price subsidy would have on the diet and health of American children. We estimated US beverage demand systems and used the estimated demand elasticities to examine the impacts of the hypothetical SSB tax and milk subsidy. Our results suggest that a 20-percent...
