The European Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) requires European states to maintain their marine waters in 'Good Environmental Status'. The MSFD includes 11 descriptors of "Good Environmental Status" (GES), including "Sea-floor Integrity". This descriptor is defined as: "Sea-floor integrity is at a level that ensures that the structure and functions of the ecosystems are safeguarded and benthic ecosystems, in particular, are not adversely affected." This contribution briefly summarizes the main conclusions of an international expert group established to review the scientific basis for making this concept operational. The experts concluded that consideration of 8 attributes of the seabed system would provide adequate information to meet... |

The data come from bait experiments that were carried out at three study sites (Meriadzek Terrace, terrace located between the canyon of Belle Île and the canyon of St Nazaire referred to as St Nazaire Terrace, and Belle Île Canyon) on the continental slope of the Bay of Biscay during the VITAL cruise in late August and early September 2002 using the ROV Victor 6000. A full description of the experiments and results can be found in Trenkel and Lorance (2011). The depth range 1100 – 1500 m was investigated in all sites by perpendicular strip transects starting from the deepest point and moving up slope (see full description in Trenkel et al 2004). Bait experiments were carried out at all three sites at regular intervals (every 12 hours) along the... |

We develop a spatially and seasonally explicit bioeconomic model with three fleet dynamics processes built in endogenously. The model has been applied to the large French trawlers harvesting a medium-depth demersal stock, North Sea saithe (i.e., pollock, Pollachius virens), and a mix of deepwater species over a 10-year period (1999-2008), and the predictions have been contrasted with observations. The best overall fit was achieved where effort allocation was determined to be 80% by traditions and 20% by economic opportunism and where harvest efficiency increased by 8% a year. With this fleet dynamics parameterization, annual trends in fishing effort and profit were well reproduced by the model over the whole time period. Time series of the observed fishing... |

With slow growth rates, late maturity and a high maximum age of 100 years or more, orange roughy can be classified as a vulnerable deepwater fish species that can only sustain low rates of exploitation. Historical patterns of exploitation associated with this species suggest that it is currently not possible to manage its fisheries in the Northeast Atlantic sustainably, and the total allowable catch for orange roughy has been gradually reduced to zero for European fisheries since 2010. Orange roughy to the west of Ireland and Britain occurs on distinct bathymetric features (seamounts, hills and canyons) as well as on flat ground along the continental slope. Productivity-susceptibility analysis (PSA) was performed to evaluate the biological vulnerability of... |

In the Northeast Atlantic fishery for roundnose grenadier Coryphaenoides rupestris, discards account for about 30% of the catch in weight. Data on discards are scarce; however, length distributions and discard rates appear to be relatively stable from year to year. In contrast, landings data available since 1990 show that the average pre-anal fin length has decreased from 20.7 cm in 1990 to 15.2 cm in 2008, resulting in a 58% reduction of the mean individual weight (850 g in 2008) and an increasing occurrence of overlapping class sizes between landings and discards in recent years. For stock assessment, the method of separable virtual population analysis (SVPA) was used. However, because of the lack of discard data for many of the years covered by the... |

Stakeholder knowledge was collected through questionnaires and cognitive maps and used to summarize biological, environmental, technical, management, and socio-economic factors for several deep-water fisheries, identifying regional management issues and solutions. The questionnaires and cognitive maps revealed different technical, environmental, and management concerns in these fisheries. Dissatisfaction with management was more at an implementation than a conceptual level, because the existing management measures were mostly considered fit for purpose. Further, catch-and-effort data provided by the fishing industry were used to calculate standardized landings per unit effort. The results suggested different trends over time for three deep-water stocks... |

This report presents the results of laboratory developments, field experiments and data analyses carried out in the contract MARE/2011/07 - "Studies on the Common Fisheries Policy" - Lot 1 "Reduction of gear impact and discards in deep sea fisheries". The contractual objectives were "(I) to identify and study trawl modification and alternative gear that aim at reducing the impact of the gear on the sea bottom when engaged in deep-sea fisheries, and (II) to identify and study a measure for discard reduction in deep-sea fisheries or fisheries having deep-sea species as a by-catch, pursued with trawls or nets. The measure could consist in gear modifications or catch purification based on the skipper’s strategy to avoid unwanted fish." |

In contrast to generally sparse biological communities in open-ocean settings, seamounts and ridges are perceived as areas of elevated productivity and biodiversity capable of supporting commercial fisheries. We investigated the origin of this apparent biological enhancement over a segment of the North Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) using sonar, corers, trawls, traps, and a remotely operated vehicle to survey habitat, biomass, and biodiversity. Satellite remote sensing provided information on flow patterns, thermal fronts, and primary production, while sediment traps measured export flux during 2007–2010. The MAR, 3,704,404 km2 in area, accounts for 44.7% lower bathyal habitat (800–3500 m depth) in the North Atlantic and is dominated by fine soft sediment... |

Sustainable fisheries management requires the evaluation of the status of exploited populations and communities. Certain bycatch species such as rays are managed together which has led to overexploitation and conservations concerns for the most vulnerable ones. Traditional fisheries stock evaluation methods need species-specific input data while for ray species-specific landings have become available only recently in Europe. To overcome data limitations caused by grouped landings we developed a Bayesian multispecies biomass production model. In addition to the grouped landings the input data are shorter time series with species-specific information (landings and scientific biomass indices). Life history traits are used to define informative priors for... |
