This text presents the general problem of nuisance and pollution created by macro-waste at sea. We clarify three main types of pollution: that of coasts, that of the sea bed and that of the open sea. The article leans on scientific data: report of the state of contamination of the coasts of France by macro waste (1982), results of works and oceanographic sea bed observation campaigns, evaluation of the contamination by micro-plastics floating on surface and concentrating in the big oceanic gyres. A paragraph is dedicated to the impacts on the ecosystems, an other one on the taken measures to fight against those macro-waste. The specific case of New Caledonia is not forgotten and in conclusion we underline the necessity of an education of the populations in... |

This paper presents a set of solutions based on the synergy between GIS and a numerical model to help in diagnosis and decision making for water quality related matters. After an overview of the model features, it describes the computer interface (ModelView) implemented as an extension of the Arc View (ESRI) GIS System to provide operational data communication between the model and the GIS in vector or raster form. The paper particularly focuses on changes in the quality of coastal waters from river discharges. It looks at the spatio-temporal representation of this behaviour and the spatial analysis of sensitive areas that can be impacted. Examples are given of a French coastal area subject to strong human pressure, i.e. marine cultures and recreational... |

The publication draws up a balance sheet about the natural marine assets of New Caledonia by distinguishing the coast and the intertidal zones, the coral reefs and lagoons, the open sea or "deep blue". A set of assets relative to the living and mineral natural resources, to the characteristics of the shallow and deep marine biodiversity, to the potential marine energy resources are discussed. This publication, edited in a Consumer directed free magazine, draws up a set of perspectives relative to a blue economy to be built in a country still very centred on its ground resources, essentially the nickel mining industry. |

The object of this article is to offer a synthesis of the knowledge clarifying the originality and the diversity of the submarine geological formations of the New Caledonian EEZ. A reminder is given onto the geologic history of the region, based upon the dislocation of the Gondwana Continent, the opening of the Tasman Sea, the presence of submarine volcanism, the setting up of heavy peridotitic rocks, the building up of the Fairway and Lord Howe Ridges and of sedimentary basins, the formation of volcanic domes and sea-mounts or guyots, the subduction along the Vanuatu Trench, the uplift of the Loyalty Islands, the development of carbonated ptatforms around the islands etc.... Of this complex history ensues an exceptional submarine geo-diversity. After this... |

The Charente Maritime coast, in central western France, is the most important area for oyster and mussel production in Europe. High density, in this restricted intertidal area, induces low growing rate and socio-economic difficulties. One of the possible solutions is to shift some oysters from intertidal area to submerged areas. Bathymetry, sedimentology, hydrodynamism, fisheries and administrative rules are some conditions which are considered to establish the better selection of potential zone. The successive steps of setting up the prototype of GIS are presented: digitized traditional data from charts, extracted data from grid models (hydrodynmaic model), merging of thematic covers, proposal of favorable areas. The results are discussed especially on... |

This article recalls the structural basis of the land-sea interface and the important need, in any action of economic development, preservation, protection or management, to be able to benefit from a precise representation of the continuity between land and sea. The new technologies that are airborne mapping using coupled topographic and bathymetric LIDAR acquisition systems allow this continuous and three-dimensional representation. This article presents the solutions, the numerous applications and, considering the New Caledonian case, the possibilities, the preferred sites and the ptential applications |

This paper calls back the needs of cartography of the interface between lands and sea and assesses the characteristics of this interface in terms of knowledge as spatial and temporal constraints. After a brief typology of the different thematic cartographies of coasts and their applications we develop the contribution of the digital high resolution satellite image and we lean on an example (inventory of aquaculture sites in inter-tropical zone) which meets the three basic needs of localization, quantification and economic planning. |

This article calls back first of all a set of facts relative to the main stakes considering sea and ocean so much on the economic point of view, in the scientific technological and innovative fields, in the governance aspects as also in the culture and international prestige ones. Then the article synthesizes several of the elements of the European study on the blue growth, the established priorities, the results of the study and its recommendations. The case of New Caledonia is then analyzed which shows that considering the 11 economic priorities identified by the European Union, 10 interest or may interest this ultra-marine country. A focus is proposed on a second European study which concerns the implementation of a Blue Society (Sea for Society... |

This text presents and explicits the story of a marine drone: the Wave Glider, designed and developed by Liquid Robotics, an American company of the Silicon Valley. The text specifies its functioning, directly dependent on energies that are the swell and the sun and its technical characteristics authorizing a set of measures of in situ parameters (sea temperature, salinity, currents, marine acoustics, video but also meteorological data acquisitions). A set of scientific or operational applications is also introduced. A detail is supplied on the first experience led in New Caledonia: inaugural mission of the drone Wave Glider, property of the Company Assystem, for a route between Nouméa and Lifou and return. Several perspectives of use of such a tool in New... |

Remote detection enables the acquisition of large volume of data in particular in areas which are not accessible. This paper describes shortly the main use of remote sensing for oceanography and marine applications. Then it presents a study related to lagoon pollution based on the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MeRIS) which was launched in march 2002 and has been providing Images until june 2002. Before its launch we had implemented a method to improve its resolution by merging its images with Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper in order to preserve its best characteristics of the two images (spatial, spectral, temporal). We now present the results of this method for real MeRIS Images (level 1b and 2) in a coastal area. The robustness of the method... |

The "ORAMA NUI" programme has been developed by the Territory of French Polynesia and IFREMER, both partners in SPT since 1988. It first aims at alleviating some bottlenecks, mainly in the coastal and lagoon economic development process, by use of satellite and computer technologies; then after four years of activities, it seeks to create opportunities for cooperative development projects involving one or several French territory and/or one or several island country in the Pacific region. After presenting the background, objectives, and bases of the programme, the paper comments on the rules set by EC for co-financing cooperative development projects involving at least one French overseas territory. |
