Nitrogen loading to the Bassin d'Arcachon coastal lagoon (SW France) was evaluated by studying land-use and nitrogen output in its 3001 km(2) catchment. At present, the catchment is dominated by forestry (79%), while intensive agriculture occupies 9% of the surface. The N-output of two hydrological subunits, i.e. the Tagon subunit dominated by pine forestry and the Arriou 11 subunit comprising both forestry and intensive agriculture, were monitored for a seven year period (1996-2002). From these observations it was calculated that forestry contributes on average 1.6 kg total N ha(-1) yr(-1), which is dominated by organic nitrogen (DON+PON are 70% of N). On an areal basis, intensive agriculture contributes 26 times more than forestry, i.e. 41.6 kg total N...

Etude Intégrée du Bassin d'Arcachon - Synthèse 1997 ArchiMer
Bouchet, Jean-marie; Deltreil, Jean-pierre; Manaud, Francois; Maurer, Daniele; Trut, Gilles.

Maurer, Daniele; Comps, Michel.
Previous pathological studies have not permitted to implicate infectious disease in summer mortalities of oysters Crassostrea gigas, in the Arcachon bay. In 1983, these summer mortalities, occurring mostly among 1 year old oysters, have been the subject of new investigations. In order to establish the causes of mortalities, oysters of the same origin were held in two areas characterized by different prevalence of mortality for 6 months, during which measurements of physiological and biochemical condition and certain histological observations were made. The study has been completed by environmental observations. Different rates of mortality appeared between the two selected areas: 30 %in Taussat in the upper part of the bay, under a continental influence...

Robert, Rene; His, Edouard; Maurer, Daniele.
Corn culture has strongly developed in Aquitaine (France) over the past years, and lead to an increased use of pesticides and herbicides. One of the most commonly used formulations around the coast of the Arcachon Bay, an historical oyster spat capture zone, is the Atrazine-Simazine mix. The action limits of this product are defined on Crassostrea gigas larvae and on two nanoplankton test strains used in a controlled environment for their food, Isochrysis aff-galbana and Chaetoceros calcitrans. Herbicides can indeed directly impact on oyster larvae, but they can also have a negative impact by interfering with the development of the algae used as aquaculture feed and feed for veligeres.

Maurer, Daniele; Borel, Michel.
Two-year-old oysters have a physiology which is reproduction-oriented, their maturation occurring synchronously among oysters from the same batch. The importance of the spring accumulation of glycogenated stocks varies through the years and correlates with the growth stage. Glucidic components are quickly used during the month preceding egg-laying and are transformed into lipid stocks for the oocytes. One-year-old oysters develop at different rates, some of them not showing any sign of maturation and the percentage of laying individuals varies through the years. Glycogenated stocks accumulate in a similar way in both age-classes and their more precocious and more intense use by young molluscs is not necessarily linked with their gametogenesis and growth,...

Spatial patterns in the condition index of the wild Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas in a macrotidal coastal ecosystem: Influence of tidal processes and beyond ArchiMer
Gasmi, Sonia; Bernard, Ismael; Pouvreau, Stephane; Maurer, Daniele; Schaal, Gauthier; Ganthy, Florian; Cominassi, Louise; Allain, Gwenhael; Sautour, Benoit; David, Valerie.
In macrotidal coastal ecosystems, spatial heterogeneity of the water column properties is induced by both oceanic and continental influences. Hydrodynamic processes generate a land-sea gradient of environmental conditions, affecting the biological performances of sedentary organisms. The aim of the present study is to establish an extensive spatial assessment in the reproductive investment of the wild Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas in Arcachon Bay. This is done by looking for a relationship between the Lawrence and Scott condition index (LSCI) and two tidal processes: the immersion level (IL) and the local oceanic flushing time (LoFt). The LSCI of C. gigas was assessed, just before gamete release, at 68 sampling stations in Arcachon Bay. Oyster...

Each summer, the IFREMER laboratory of Arcachon monitors, in the scope of an agreement with the Regional Conchological Comity of Arcachon, the reproduction of Pacific oysters in the Arcachon Bay. This monitoring aims to provide oyster farmers with information necessary to the spat collecting: - dates and amount of spawn, - larval development speed, - presence of the most evolved stages in the habitat (close to fixation). Reproduction is monitored from June to September, with plankton being sampled four times a week on different representative sites. Oyster larvae at different stages are counted. At the end of the reproduction period (September-October), larval recruitment on collectors is estimated via the counting of the spats collected, at various...

ArchiMer
His, Edouard; Maurer, Daniele; Robert, Rene.
The spat production in the Bay of Arcachon has been recently disturbed. Bioassays using algae used as food for oyster larvae have shown that the organotin paints affect or inhibit growth of Isochrysis galbana and Chaetoceros calcitrans . Fresh waters coming into the bay and shore sediment did not affect the growth of these algae. Bioassays proposed by Woelke (1967) using embryos and larvae of Crassostrea gigas have shown that the quality of the sea water from Arcachon harbour has been improved a few months after the use of organotin paints has been prohibited. Likewise fresh waters are free from any micropollutants that could drastically disturb the reproduction of C. gigas in the bay.

Tunin Ley, Alina; Maurer, Daniele.
The FlowCAM / PhytoImage project has for objective, forward, the operational implementation of analyses of the phytoplanktonic composition of samples of sea water using automated, or semi-automated analysis, by using FlowCAM coupled with a specific version of the software PhytoImage, developed by the University of Mons in Belgium. This document reports first phases of the realization of the project, made within the framework of a post-doctorate, in constant interaction with the team of the UMONS. Pictures stemming from the digitalization of samples, mainly taken in the Bay of Arcachon from January, 2010 till March, 2011, allowed to constitute picture libraries of the particles of the Bay, mainly phytoplanktonic but also zooplanktonic and sluggish...

His, Edouard; Maurer, Daniele; Robert, Rene.

Influence of phytoplankton diversity and community structure on oyster reproduction (Arcachon Bay, France) ArchiMer
Gonzales, Arriagada; Bernard, Ismael; Maurer, Daniele; Auby, Isabelle; Gasmi, Sonia; Pouvreau, Stephane; David, Valerie.
Arcachon Bay is one of the most important spat-supplying area for the French oyster production. During the last 16 years, the local economic activity of spat production has been threatened recurrently by a high interannual variability of seed harvesting. This threatened spat production was attributed to reproductive problems highlighted by both a delay in oyster spawning and a decrease of small larvae abundances since 1995. Recent works showed that these two reproduction indices seem closely related to climate change that might controls the phytoplankton communities of the Bay. Food availability in term of quantity and quality appears thus as a serious track to understand the reproductive problems of oyster in the Arcachon Bay. The aim of this work was...

Auby, Isabelle; Devault, Damien; Trut, Gilles; Cantin, Christian; Maurer, Daniele.
For fifteen years, northern Medoc hosts sites of Penaeus japonicus. The six farms, with a total area of 180 ha (95 ha water) are supplied with water by canals connected to the Gironde estuary. Their normal total production is 11 tons per year, for an annual national output of 25 tonnes. In 2001, the survival rate of postlarvae were particularly low (22% average) compared to previous years, causing a decrease in production on all farms. A total of 4 tons of penaeid were harvested by farmers, about one third of normal production. To explain this sudden drop in production, farmers have questioned the possibility of pollution of the water feeding their marshes, suspecting especially the recent use of certain insecticides related to forestry and viticulture. A...

ArchiMer
Maurer, Daniele; Borel, Michel; Dreno, Jean-paul.
