Dietary phosphatidylcholine requirements in larval and postlarval Penaeus japonicus Bate OMA
Camara, M.R.; Coutteau, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
Three nutritional experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of dietary phosphatidylcholine (PC) on the growth (length, weight, and metamorphosis) and survival (rearing and stress) of larval and postlarval Penaeus japonicus Bate. Purified soybean phosphatidylcholine (SPC, 95% purity), hen-egg PC (EPC, 94% purity), and de-oiled soybean lecithin (DSL, PC 23% purity) were used as sources of dietary PC. The results indicated that optimal metamorphosis in larval P. japonicus was obtained at levels of 15-30 g kg-1 of dietary SPC. Feeding trials with postlarval P. japonicus showed that low levels of dietary SPC (15 g kg-1) were more beneficial than...

International study on Artemia : 59. Artemia tibetiana: preliminary characterization of a new Artemia species found in Tibet (People's Republic of China) OMA
Abatzopoulos, T.J.; Zhang, B.; Sorgeloos, P..
In this study, we report on the existence of a new bisexual Artemia species, found in the high plateaus of Tibet (P.R. China). Different disciplines have been used to characterize this new population: biometrics of cysts and nauplii, morphometry of adults, cytogenetics, allozyme and DNA analyses and cross-breeding/fertility tests with known Artemia species. The results obtained justify that Artemia from Tibet is a new species with the proposed name Artemia tibetiana.

Effects of feeding (omega-3) HUFA-enriched Artemia during a progressively increasing period on the larviculture of freshwater prawns OMA
Romdhane, M.S.; Devresse, B.; Léger, Ph.; Sorgeloos, P..
Larvae of the freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) were reared to post-larvae in a closed recirculation system. Six treatments were designed where freshly-hatched Artemia nauplii were first given to the larvae for 3, 7, 11, 15, 17 and 25 days according to the treatment. After that (omega-3) HUFA-enriched Artemia were given until the 28th day at which time the test was terminated and evaluated. The requirement for (omega-3) Highly Unsaturated Fatty Acids (HUFA) for the larval stages of M. rosenbergii was confirmed by this experiment. Moreover, the longer the period of feeding on (omega-3) HUFA-enriched Artemia nauplii , the better the results in terms of...

Variability of the microbial environment of rotifer Brachionus plicatilis and Artemia production systems OMA
Verdonck, L.; Swings, J.; Kersters, K.; Dehasque, M.; Sorgeloos, P.; Léger, P..
Samplings were organized in three marine fish hatcheries. Samples were taken at different steps during the production of algae, rotifers and Artemia . There were 233 dominant colony types isolated for further characterization. The isolates were compared to each other and to reference strains of Photobacterium, Vibrio and Alteromonas, using cellular fatty acid fingerprints. Fatty acid profiles of the isolates were grouped using principal component analysis. The isolates fell into at least ten major groups, of which two correspond to the genera Vibrio and to Alteromonas, respectively. Some groups seem to be restricted to a particular type of live food or isolation...

Review of the biogeography of the genus Artemia (Crustacea, Anostraca) OMA
Triantaphyllidis, G.V.; Abatzopoulos, T.J.; Sorgeloos, P..
In this study we report on the known Artemia habitats worldwide. Recent literature information is incorporated about the taxonomic status of the various populations studied. The genus is composed of di-, tri-, tetra- and pentaploid parthenogenetic populations and of the following bisexual species, A. franciscana franciscana, A. franciscana monica, A. franciscana sp., A. persimilis, A. salina, A. urmiana, A. sinica and A. sp. from Kazakhstan. The problems of characterizing new brine shrimp populations are discussed. In view of the great importance of Artemia as part of the live food chain for the culture of...

Evaluation of vitamin C-enriched Artemia nauplii for larvae of the giant freshwater prawn OMA
Merchie, G.; Lavens, P.; Radull, J.; Nelis, H.; De Leenheer, A.P.; Sorgeloos, P..
The effects of high levels of ascorbic acid (AA) delivered through enriched live food has been verified through the successful culture of larval giant freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii Two successive feeding trials were set up using a control (550 µg AA g-1 DW) and two different AA-enrichment levels in Artemia (1300 and 2750 µg AA g-1 DW). Under standard culture conditions, no differences in growth nor survival could be observed demonstrating that the nutritional requirements are below 550 µg AA g-1 DW, which is the normal level occurring in freshly-hatched Artemia . However, a significantly positive effect could be...

Improvements in the larviculture of turbot Scophthalmus maximus: zootechnical and nutritional aspects, possibility for disease control OMA
Dhert, Ph.; Lavens, P.; Dehasque, M.; Sorgeloos, P..
The rotifer feeding regime for larval turbot could be improved by more regular feeding and adjusted food distributions as to prevent overfeeding and digestion problems. All tests were successfully run in clear-water conditions indicating that the administration of algae is not essential during the rotifer stage. Larval requirements with respect to (n-3) RUFA, and more specifically DRA and DRA/EPA ratio appeared to change according to the age of the larvae and the physiological condition at the different larval stages. As early as the first week the stress resistance of the larvae could be improved by feeding rotifers specifically enriched in DRA. However, the continuous feeding of these live preys did not result in the best larval output, indicating that...

Successful inoculation of Artemia and production of cysts in man-made salterns in the Philippines OMA
de los Santos, C. Jr.; Sorgeloos, P.; Laviña, E.; Bernardino, A..
The objective of the inoculation described in this paper was to test the feasibility of culturing Artemia in man-made earthen salterns and of producing adults and cysts for use in aquaculture projects in the Philippines. San Francisco Bay (California, USA) Artemia were inoculated in two concrete tanks and in four earthen ponds which are part of a small local salt factory. It was found that Artemia can be grown (with continuous production of nauplii and cysts) year-round in covered concrete tanks and in open concrete tanks and earthen ponds during the dry season (February to June). Lethal effects of too high water temperatures (>35°C) to the cultures were anticipated by the use of green coconut...

The use of algal substitutes and the requirement for live algae in the hatchery and nursery rearing of bivalve molluscs: an international survey OMA
Coutteau, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
The mass-production of micro-algae has been recognized by several authors as the main bottle-neck for the culture of bivalve seed. This has prompted a search for alternatives to on-site algal production, such as dried heterotrophically-grown algae, preserved algal pastes, micro-encapsulated diets, and yeasts. However the extent to which these products have been tried, and rejected or retained by hatchery operators is poorly documented. Also, the actual algal requirement and production cost of the bivalve seed industry is difficult to estimate. The present inquiry allowed the collection of data concerning the requirement of live algae and its associated costs encountered in 50 commercial and experimental hatcheries from all over the world. Furthermore, the...

Incorporation of different fatty acids, supplied as emulsions or liposomes, in the polar and neutral lipids of Crassostrea gigas spat OMA
Caers, M.; Coutteau, P.; Sorgeloos, P..
Pacific oysters spat (Crassostrea gigas) were fed an algal diet (Tetraselmis suecica) whether or not supplemented with emulsions or liposomes rich in 18:1n-9, 18:2n-6 and 22:6n-3. The preferential accumulation and partitioning of the latter fatty acids between the polar and neutral lipids of C. gigas spat were followed. Additionally, the efficiency of emulsions and liposomes as fatty acid carriers for C. gigas spat were compared. The incorporation of dietary fatty acids was found to vary substantially according to the fatty acid carrier (emulsions vs. liposomes), the particular fatty acid (18:1n-9,...

Rearing techniques for difficult marine fish larvae OMA
Dhert, Ph.; Divanach, P.; Kentouri, M.; Sorgeloos, P..
In finfish mariculture, seed production and larval rearing still form the bottleneck for all ongrowing operations and are considered as the main limiting factor for industrial development. Through trial and error more than through biological understanding two opposite hatchery techniques have been developed which surprisingly control a multiparametric combination of different factors but aspire to the same objective of conformity with wild standards and the cost-effective production of larvae. In intensive aquaculture, the rearing technique is characterised by high initial larval densities in small tanks under strict hydraulic, thermic, and nutritional conditions. The light conditions are artificial. The temperature and quality of water are controlled. The...

The use of Artemia nauplii for toxicity test: a critical analysis OMA
Sorgeloos, P.; Remiche-Van der Wielen, C.; Persoone, G..
Because of their easy hatching from dry cysts and their year-round availability, nauplii of the brine shrimp Artemia salina are most convenient test organisms for toxicity studies. The bioassays mentioned in literature have, however, mostly been carried out with larvae of which neither the exact instar stage nor the geographical origin is known. The incubation of the cysts should always be carried out under strictly controlled temperature conditions since both the onset of hatching and the length of the hatching period are temperature-dependent. Moreover, the experiments should only be carried out with populations of nauplii of the same stage of development since it is demonstrated that the second and third instars are...

Availability of reference Artemia cysts OMA
Sorgeloos, P..
Biometrical, biochemical and food-value characteristics of Artemia nauplii vary with the source of the cyst material. In order to facilitate intercalibration and/or comparison of research conducted with cysts from different sources, homogenous cyst material can now be obtained from the Artemia Reference Center (State University of Ghent, J. Plateaustraat 22, B-9000 Ghent, Belgium). The reference cysts have been tested extensively for hatching characteristics, biometrics, fatty-acid content, pesticide contamination and effectiveness as larval food for various crustaceans and fishes.
